This is a bias binding how to video. These are the tips and tricks that give me a very flat, professional and non bulky finish on armscye and necklines using bias tape.
I always finish my sleeveless tops and dresses with bias binding on the inside of the garment. Over time, I have perfected the way to get the bias tape to lay flat and very aesthetically.
Here I show you my tips and tricks!

Thank you, here in the UK we can buy narrower bias, so will get it next time. Great tip about using bias tape for circular/bias skirt hems too, I've always struggled trying to hem them without the tiny pleats/puckers. I liked the red binding on the navy dress, as it set off the tiny red flowers in the pattern, and 'lifted' the dress to a designer level :).

That's so cheap! I think I've seen rolls like that on Ebay. I end up making my own a lot of my own bias. The most common tape in our fabric stores is poly/cotton which is pretty stiff I think and a lot of times too much for a lot of fabrics. I'd love to be able to find such nice satin tape! That's an excellent tip about clipping! Hand sewing makes for such a beautiful finish! You are the queen of the sleeveless Karina, and all of these look so professional!
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 6 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Made This actually finding the poly cotton is harder for me. This one is very soft and maleable and I’m so happy to have got my hands on so much!
@billiev8705
@billiev8705 3 жыл бұрын
I've recently made a bunch of rayon (viscose) bias tape because it is so much softer, very thin and malleable, which is great for my sensitive skin. Also, because it's so thin, it works for thinner, drapier fabrics. I used a "how to make continuous bias tape" video off youtube to make it quicker to make a LOT.
@billiev8705
@billiev8705 3 жыл бұрын
PS rayon is more malleable, so there's no need to clip it. Also, you can pre-curve the bias tape by pressing it into the shape of your armholes before sewing it on!
@ElizabethMadeThisSEW

@@billiev8705 Making bias yourself is almost better. Rayon is so soft and easy to press into the curves for sure!

Hi there and new to your channel. I just loved the tip about sewing the bias, especially hand sewing. Sometimes hand sewing things I found like a hem and bias binding to neck and armholes has a much nicer finish over machine sewing. I am new to garment sewing but have picked up that you don’t want to necessarily use your machine for everything. I love couture sewing techniques which is mostly hand sewing. It gives garments a less manufactured look but professional look. Thanks for your generosity in teaching this.

Karina what a wonderful video. This is what I was missing in my sewing practice. I had too much bulk at my armholes and my material was gathering and puckering. Reducing the bulk is key..though it’s tedious to trim down it really does give a couture finish? Thank you for sharing your sewing knowledge.

I first saw this on Sian’s channel from England “Kittenish Behaviour”. She also uses the binding to cover the edges of seams sometimes. I think that’s called a Hong Kong finish. It’s a very nice effect. I’ve done cotton bias bindings, but I love the look of this satin finished tape a lot better. Great video!
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 6 жыл бұрын
Loriann Payne I don’t ever use the Hong Kong finish on seams... it make look nice but it’s bulky. When you press you’ll have the bias binding marks on the other side. I only use it trimmed like this for armholes and necklines. for hems I don’t trim it and make it narrower. Thanks for watching.

Thank you Karina, this is very helpful. I do have a question for you though. Do you do the same technique with a knit fabric. I have a 100% knit that I need to finish the armholes with and was thinking of serging and then turning it over 3/8 inch and stitch. Do you have any other recommendation? Thank you, Jorja
@LiftingPinsandNeedles

Jorja Price I only bias bind VERY thick structured knits, bias binding as such does not give you and armhole with stretch and some patterns use a lot of negative ease. So I would be very careful. For patterns that don’t have that much negative ease and fabric that is think like ponte or scuba it should be fine. I have done what you say of serging and folding in but armbands give a better result in my opinion.

Learned alot from this video. So glad I found it! I do have a question though. What fabric is your satin bias binding made of? I found some on Amazon that is made from a nylon but the description said it was elasticized as well. Does your satin bias stretch too? If not, I will keep on looking for a satin type bias binding. Thank you very much.

The fabric is satin, because it’s on the bias, if you pull it, it will stretch as any other woven. It is not elasticized as such. You can make your own bias tape and that’s super fun too. I have a video on the channel that shows the how to :)

I found some satin bias on Amazon UK from Katie's Boutique at £11.99 for 144m. Seemed too good to be true but it is lovely.

Hello Karina...You are an accomplished seamstress. Question: how do you join seams for bias tape? Do you pre-measure circumference and sew bias tape together before pinning to armhole and attaching? Thank you for your feedback!
@LiftingPinsandNeedles

I don’t pre measure. You can see it here at minute 18 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eovbp39oe62HsNU

Hi Karina, your tips are life saving... Do you stretch the binding a little or not at all when applying?
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the fabric. The store bought satin one, I don’t stretch, if it’s self made with linen, cotton or rayon, I do stretch a tiny tiny bit.

Hello Karina! This was a very good video on your process. You made it clear and easy to duplicate. I have been on your KZbin for a few days viewing a lot of videos from many different makers on how to raise an armscye so the underarm is not showing. But I have not seen any that have been helpful. Have you done a video that I missed? I thought I went through all your videos but just wanted to check with you. I am working on the George + Ginger Bonus Tank top and I have made many adjustments, but this is something I hope to fix before I cut into any further fabric with this pattern. Thank you kindly for your response. Any Ideas appreciated. By the way I would like to bring it up about 3 inches. Thanks again!!!

I love this video, I appreciate it so much. I think I've watched it 10 times! 😂 I have two questions: 1) Do you only use satin bias tape? 2) How wide is the tape you're using in this video when it's finished? I'm assuming 3/4"? Thanks so much!

I do love this technique. I however, don’t care for the Wrights brand cotton binding. It is crispy and stiffens any edge you use it on. I’d love to find this satin type. So if anyone finds this type in US please post!

Great tutorial can you tell me do you still do. 1/4 inch seam even if the pattern says 5/8 would it not make the arm hole smaller.
@LiftingPinsandNeedles
@LiftingPinsandNeedles 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the style. If the armhole is already fitting well, it’s trim the seam allowance to 1/4”, bit if I’d like a bit more coverage, I won’t trim and I’ll sew at 1/4”. I decide this by trying on and seeing how it fits. I rarely trim away seam allowance to be honest. I like a lot of cover on my armholes.
