"Nevermind the circumstances...and if it'll make that woman happy, I'll take it." Just the way he speaks that line, & the tone of voice he uses, literally makes my eyes tear-up every time. Such a touching scene.

IMDb says Ed Reed was Peter Bogdanovich's driver. The small part was given to him as they couldn't find the right person, but Peter thought he had the right look. Regardless, he does a great job.
@mjreed19642 жыл бұрын
@@borbetomagus Ed Reed is my father. The Teamster's Union Local 696 out of Topeka, of which Dad was a Business Agent, bid and won the contract to chauffeur all the actors during the filming of the movie. He & Peter hit it off immediately. In fact, they remained lifelong friends. Dad actually had to audition for the part and it turned out Peter said he was a natural in front of the camera. In fact, every year our family of 7 children (Lawrence, KS) received wonderful Christmas gifts from Peter. As it turns out, Peter wanted our family to move to CA so Dad could be an actor. We did not move to CA and didn't even find out about Peter's vision for Dad until we were adults. Instead, we were raised in a town geared toward families and we all turned out "normal" (whatever that may be!) Anyway, yes he was Peter's driver and they had a great friendship. God rest both of them.

Why? It’s pretty obvious that the lawman was living/sleeping with the widow, probably had been having an affair with her for a while before the husband passed. He just wanted to look good in front of her and keep her mouth shut. This scene isn’t touching at all, it’s just two marital scam artists against two financial ones.

Like Jozart below, “Paper Moon” is one of my all-time favourite movies. I don’t think Ryan O’Neal was ever in a better movie than this and his daughter Tatum gave a fabulous performance for such a young girl making her debut. For some strange reason I haven’t seen this movie televised for a very long time. 5 years at least and maybe 10. God knows why!.

If this were done today: the end scene would have them "driving" on a set, with green screen CGI background. [Yes, I know that, even here, when they are "driving", they are really on a platform that truck is pulling.] And they'd probably not have the imagination to do it in black&white.

I've been thinking about this scene and I'm convinced that the policeman knows it's a scam. He's heard about this trick by now a few times in his line of work. But he's recently dating the widow after the husband's passing and wants her happy. "If it will make that woman happy" is a telling line. On a deeper level, it makes Ryan O'Neal's character look like less of a bad guy in that while he's deceiving people for a profit, at the end of the day he's not harming anyone and might actually be doing something positive. It's important to the theme of the picture to get the audience to be on these two criminal's side. There are a lot of sympathetic characters in this movie just trying to get by during hard times. Even though they might seem to lack character on the surface, deep down you feel for them all.

I love the film deeply but you all have any idea just how much 12 dollars was within the great resesion during the 1930's in terms of today's money?????. Great film but completely over exaggerated in terms of how much money they were making selling the good Lords book throughout the great depression of the 1930's.... Do the math in terms of today's money and you'll find that the film (how great it is) is completely flawed.
