Malachi - Bibledex

I named my youngest son Malachi. Love the name love the book! Interesting that the name means My messager. My favoite quote in the book of Malachi 2:16 is" I hate divorce".

There are a lot of men in my family named Malachi, but they all pronounce it like -kee instead of -kai. I wonder how that difference came about.

The great vowel shift--Like when English speakers first adopted the latin alphabet, they used "i" the same way as the romance languages do: making the "ee" sound. But pronunciations changed in the English speaking world, so now we usually pronounce "i" as "ai." Families that lived in anglophone countries during the shift changed their pronunciations with it, where most of the world--and immigrants from there--still pronounce it the old way, closer to the hebrew.
