This is one of my favourite videos on your channel. I've only recently become a serious Christian and so I didn't even realise the concept of a soul has been misinterpreted. Half an hour later, I'm digging right into researching the topic and sobbing my eyes out at how the importance of living your life with and for God is made fresh. I want people to feel loved and be happy but most of all, I want them to be alive - really living. God is the source of all life and He loves you and as you walk with Him, you'll find He is worthy of all your trust. You don't have to stay chained to your past, you don't have to look around for a quick fix for a temporary high, you don't have to seek validation from places that never satisfy you and you don't have to have your mind overloaded with worries - God is with you. Give Him a tiny chance, a tiny mustard seed of desperate faith and He will transform your life.

C.S. Lewis in "Screwtape Letters" also described humans as 'hybrid creatures', 'of the spiritual' and 'of the flesh'. I have no idea what kind of implications this has, because both of them make sense. I guess that's a question to be answered in heaven :/
@elizabethprov28947 жыл бұрын
Not exactly... the "nephesh" is the body with the breath of God breathed into it. The soul does not exist apart from the body. The living nephesh *has* life because of the breath of God. When we die, the body returns to the earth, as dust, as the breath returns to God where it came from. But this isn't the _soul_ returning to God, it's simply the breath. He gave it, He takes the back. This is the "spark" of life. This is the Hebrew understanding of it. When we die, our body remains in the dust of the earth and we "sleep" until the resurrection. Our "soul" doesn't exist apart from the body, so we cannot say our "soul" goes to heaven when we die... our nephesh (living body) simply ceases to exist until God brings us BACK to life in the resurrection.

Soul sleep is an extreme minority position in early Christian teaching.
@VirginMostPowerfull7 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth that is heresy. In Revelation, before the resurrection, there are humans in Heaven. Jesus, when he was transfigured, consulted Moses and Elijah about his Passion which is impossible if they're supposed to be sleeping in the grave. In Hebrews, and this is in suppot of the Communion of Saints, we learn that we do not only draw near to God and Christ but also "spirits of just men made perfect"(Heb 12: 23). Verses that speak of the dead sleeping use phenomenological language, the Bible often uses "sleep" as a euphemism for "death." In fact, this euphemism is common today. Soul sleep is not true, it's mostly some Christians not understanding the language. CS Lewis was right, we are hybrids. In fact, that would also come in support of the Nephilim theory because demons are uncomfortable when they do not possess a body. In our common speech we use "soul" to refer to that which keeps existing after our deaths. The Bible probably uses spirit to designate it now that I think about it, like the Holy Spirit. Although there's nothing wrong with using more complex language when we're doing theology.

Destynation Y I could argue wth all your points, but I won't. The Bible is clear, and just because the "majority" believe something doesn't make it right.

@Corro Con Perseveranza please excuse me if I don't understand your response correctly. You are saying that Michael fought Satan over Moses' spiritual body? In the Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible commentary says there's no doubt they're fighting over Moses literal body, and "That Moses’ body was raised, appears from his presence with Elijah and Jesus (who were in the body) at the Transfiguration".
@lucianom.villar5 жыл бұрын
@Corro Con Perseveranza I appreciate you do, my friend. I just like to back my opinion with theological published materials, it's not like they're where I get my opinions from. I undestand you believe in an immortal soul that hides inside the body, so that's why we're not on the same page regarding this issue. It's not my intention to debate on that subject, I'll just say that hebrews understood that the only hope of afterlife was resurrection, and the controversy between Michael and Satan was over the resurrection of Moses. Of course the devil don't care about a lifeless body.

The word used there is not Nephesh! It's actually a Greek word: psyche which is related too breath (ruah in hebrew) and the invisible (spirit) side of humanity.
@mishamulyakaev74064 жыл бұрын
To chime in (worth the read): the word rendered "hell" in many Bible's is actually the Greek "Gehenna" - literally the valley of Hinnom. True story, it's an actual geographical valley outside of Jerusalem that was used before as a big dumpster. The garbage there was apparently burned. Jesus used this familiar valley in his teaching to vividly illustrate complete destruction (Luke 12:5, Matt. 13:15,33). Never was anything thrown alive into this garbage heap to suffer. So back to Matt. 10:28: the context shows that God is the only one capable of resurrecting humans, and Jesus is emphasizing that his apostles should fear God rather than man. Men can "kill the body but cannot kill the soul." Soul in this context seems to refer to a person's future hope of living again - since man obviously cannot bring back the dead. Whereas God, who has power to completely restore someone's life is more deserving of our fear (or deep respect). Further, God is able to completely destroy someone (with no hope of a resurrection) for he is able to "destroy both soul and body in Gehenna." He is able to destroy any future hope of the soul living again, meaning a person would remain unconscious forever. This complete destruction is what Revelation refers to as "the second death." Revelation also uses a fitting visual of complete destruction and tells us it's meaning, Rev. 20:14 says, "this means the second death, the lake of fire." So both Gehenna & the lake of fire symbolize complete destruction, with no hope of living again.

This video focuses a lot on the physical aspect of _nephesh_ and so a lot of people are confusing it with our physical bodies. *Genesis 2: 7* might clear this up a bit. It says: _"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."_ The passage mentions "dust" and "the breath of life", in other words , i.e. the physical and the spiritual components which together make "a living soul", i.e. a _nephesh._ So the idea is that there is both a material and an immaterial aspect to humans and these together make the whole living person which is a _nephesh._ I believe that the immaterial aspect of a person continues on existing after death, but in that state we are not a complete human, a complete _nephesh,_ and so we await for the resurrection of our bodies so that our _nephesh_ will be restored and glorified, and so we would be complete once again like God intended.

It seems to me that this bible project video is making an opposing claim to what you explained: that the duality idea of a human being consisting of a physical body and a non-physical spiritual component is a Greek philosophical idea, and not expressed in the scriptures and specifically in the idea of nephesh

What's the point of having a body if you can't enjoy it? 😠 You put your desires of the flesh to death.... You wish to serve a being in a body you are forbidden to use. Your concept of Heaven is a Damnation. You have no sense of 'Self'.... You reject one Master for the Other and both are negative.... Sa'Tan means "Advirsary" - One being grants wishes: and will give Power, Money, and Material wealth to you ::: The other says put your humanity to Death for treasures in Heaven (What good are Treasures in Heaven? Is there inequity in Heaven? Will I have a huge mansion, while you have a shack, and if so; are you truly in Heaven than?) It's like God says, be a good slave, and trust me (before I devour your very soul); and the other says 'Becareful what you ask for; but embrace Hedonism'.... I want to live Christ like because in doing so, I will have a good life (God plays an active role in our lives); however I utterly reject your notion of the 'Soul' and Heaven. Damnation is having no purpose with existence, or being an eternal Slave (both of which I reject). Just because a being created you, does not mean it deserves 'Glorification'..... God is Love, and there must be more that what is in the Bible or being taught in Church....also I know ghosts and others exist....

This is one of my favorite videos on the internet. You mention that the Biblical authors have a concept of the person existing after death, waiting for resurrection, not using the word Nephesh (which makes sense). But can you make a video addressing these passages and (perhaps a different video addressing?) the Greek words used that we translate spirit or mind? This video and your series on spiritual beings are, to me, the most paradigm shifting and clarifying tools for Anglo/Westerners' understanding of Biblical cosmology, and I'd really like to fill that understanding out with teaching on some of these other "supernatural" (or, maybe more accurately, super-anthrosensory?) components of creation. Also on the list: the phrase "below the earth", "Hades" (like in Rev 1:17-18), and "sheol" and perhaps "unclean spirit" (Maybe I missed these terms in other videos? If so, I'd love to be directed.)

This is a great word study! Thank you. It fully opens up a study I did years ago called ” Breaking Intimidation” by John Bevere. In the book of James, chapter 1, verses 6-8 talks about not being double-minded. He said the word there is actually ”soulish” meaning focused on things of the soul instead of things of The Spirit. That person cannot receive anything of The Spirit. So, with this study, I can see that it's basically saying not to be the opposite of The Shema if you want to receive from The Lord. So very cool! It's especially relevant in this generation where many want to walk in ”showers of blessing” with an umbrella, so as not to get saturated with the uncomfortable parts. If we lead our nephesh rather than follow it, we have far better promises for this life and eternity.

Breakfast Man How does this align with New Testament concepts of the afterlife? In the NT, Jesus and Paul both speak of people immediately being with God in paradise after death (even as their lifeless bodies lie in the ground.) At the same time, there's also a sense that true afterlife does not begin until the resurrection of our bodies.

Charlie, not a bad point. Ecclesiastes 12:7 says the "dust" returns to the earth while the spirit returns to the one who created it, so there does seem to be a disconnect between the body (nephesh) and the notion of a spirit. Both views can still be right here - the video correcting our notion of soul, and a spirit (breath of life). Jesus is the connection between the 2 - through His death and resurrection He seems to have risen BODILY through the power of the SPIRIT! Now that's a GOD I can love with all my heart, mind, and nephesh.

Soul or souls as used in the Bible refers to (1) people, (2) animals, or (3) the life that a person or an animal has. Spirit refers to the life force or energy needed to make animate all living creatures.

The soul is the name given to the supposed "immaterial part" of an individual, which some believe can exist separately from the body in the afterlife. Though the term itself largely comes from Christian traditions, most religions have some concept of a "part" of the person that is separate and distinct from the body. It's considered by those who believe in it to be a self-evident and intrinsic part of humanity (hence why things like philosophical zombies can exist in some peoples' minds). It is an important aspect of much religious belief-particularly when concerning the afterlife. The term is often invoked in a metaphorical sense (such as a poetic statement "my soul was moved by his words") without implying the actual existence of a separate "magical" part of a person that exists after the person dies. Scientific view The concept of the soul is not recognised by science because it is a supernatural explanation of the phenomenon of human consciousness, and as such non-falsifiable. The soul is postulated by believers to be completely immaterial. Scientists who attempt, and without exception fail, to find evidence of the soul will usually be told that they can't measure or characterise it anyway. Like most other spiritual beliefs, this makes the idea of the soul (conveniently) immune to scrutiny. Those who logically and scientifically argue against a "soul" would state that if something can't be measured or tested-directly or indirectly-in any way, then it can't affect the material world and therefore is, in all practicality and in all actuality, non-existent. The soul is usually described as an immaterial "thing" in a way that implies that it "contains" someone's consciousness, emotions, personality, and memories. In reality, the only possibility of a soul existing would be through a function of awareness; that is, awareness from a body at a moment in time. We know from physics that time is merely space, so the fact that humans experience from one point in time rather than simultaneously experiencing the entirety of our lifespan creates an argument for the idea of the soul occupying a body, and traveling through space connected with it. The movement would be what we perceive as time. Neuroscience suggests that these various aspects of the mind are almost exclusively dependent on the brain. Changes to the brain from injury or illness directly affect memories, emotions and in fact their overall character. If those changes in actual personality can be identified within the working brain, how can the "soul" which is generally described as these aspects in collective, exist? An immaterial entity would not be expected to be affected by a giant rod ploughing right through its owner's skull. If the soul does not interact with the physical body at all, then it should not bear any responsibility for the actions of its "host", like "sin". (The soul would just be an "observer", but even just "observing" something physically affects that thing.) If a body sins, it cannot be the soul's fault. If the soul interacts with the physical body in some way, then that makes the soul a physical phenomenon.

John Smith I think that is what Eckhart Tolle says about the soul in the power of now. It’s just an observer.

Definitions of the soul in other languages shouldn't come in place of what it actually is in reality. God played a huge role in the development of the Hebrew language. While reading the new testament i would be thinking of the definition the hebrews, God's own people saw it as, which is described in this video.

While I enjoy these short messages, I have to disagree on this one. When I review the word "nephesh," I've never found it translated (in this specific form) as "throat." I do see that a root form of this word can be based upon breath. However, the specific lexical version of this word is typically translated as "soul." When I listen to this video, it seems like the author is stating that the scholars who have translated this Hebrew word to "soul" have been wrong for the last 2000 years (including the way that the verse from Deuteronomy is translated into and out of New Testament Greek). The word conveys a meaning of something that is not physical. This is why it is translated (in the Old Testament) to the word "soul" approximately 475 times and a form of "self" just 17 times (alongside translations to the words "heart," "mind," "will," etc.). Am I just misunderstanding what the author of this video is saying?

@Chris I agree, there is definitely something a little fishy going on here. Throat is not even among the Strong's definitions for nephesh. I also challenged an inaccurate statement they made and two of my replies have been hidden. I love the Bible Project, but I have heard rumors on KZbin that Tim Mackie does not believe that hell is a place of punishment. After my encounter in this comment section, I am starting to think the rumor might be true. If so, they could be using this video to diminish the meaning of soul in the minds of Bible Project followers before they release a video on hell that says it is not a place of punishment. Let us pray for the Bible Project!

John Peter Amen! We all are responsible for studying and determining if what we are hearing is the truth. Usually, at least so far, the summary videos on each book of the Bible have been very true to the Scriptures as far as I have been able to investigate. I’m not a Hebrew Scholar though and appreciate learning. Prayer is key John Peter! We need to pray for TBP, our world, and our world leaders! I don’t believe that TBP is intentionally attempting to deceive but I do believe that it’s very difficult to dissect complicated Biblical theology in a 6 minute video. May I ask what sources are saying TBP doesn’t believe hell is eternal punishment? We are told over and over in the Christian Scriptures that we will be judged for our actions. I believe you, I just am wondering about their credibility! TBP has proven credible to me so far but I will continue to investigate for myself each topic and I’ll bet you will do the same. Keep studying and praying and I’ll see you in eternity!

@Kelly Bezz - This is the video I saw that was making those accusations: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHqXYmelfbSGiLc let me know your thoughts. I love the Bible Project so much. I also don't think they would intentionally attempt to deceive people. The problem is that sometimes a particular theology can become an idol in a persons life. Once someone has been brought up on a particular theology it can be very hard to change that persons mind. The truth is, it takes the Holy Spirit, not intellect, to reveal the true meaning of scripture. So yes, as your said, prayer is the key!
@KellyBezz7 жыл бұрын
John Peter Oh John Peter yes! You understand fully! I pray for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding every day and as I get older I’m not so quick to assume my position or thoughts are correct without much study and as you stated prayerful conversation with my Creator (yes I believe conversation is both speaking AND listening!). The gift of the Spirit has Blessed me in untold ways and I’m so grateful for Him. A wise man I know told me that the gift of the HS is like a gift card. The card still holds potential value but I must use it to get the actual value from it. Thanks for helping keep my faith in humans! God Bless John Peter!

John Peter oh boy. I don’t know where to begin to dissect that awful video. If she would have let Tim finish what he was saying (and I apologize I couldn’t watch the whole thing because her voice is worse than fingernails on chalkboard for me!) he was trying to say what the Heaven and Earth Video says that Jesus’ main message was Him bringing New Creation. So the idea that he thinks is false is that our objective here on Earth is to die and fly to Heaven but instead there will be a New Earth where we live like described in Acts 1-2 sharing everything and caring deeply about others so no one is neglected (widows, orphans etc). Read the Gospels and indeed Jesus said over and over “the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew uses that whereas others use Kingdom of God - same thing) is at hand” in Jesus. Jesus brought the Kingdom back to Earth and created sacred communities (we call churches but a better word is ecclesias) here and we are commissioned to go and do the same. In other words we are to treat others like we want to be treated. I’m not explaining it very well but you are obviously knowledgeable and hopefully can see what I’m saying. That nonsense about satanic hand signals is just that NONSENSE! People have created what they mean to be evil but it’s normal physical behavior to hold your hands a certain way and it means absolutely nothing! I’m ALL for the truth but I don’t believe this video nor like their methods. I’m still a fan of TBP but will continue to prayerfully examine every video, blog, podcast etc. You are a smart person and I think wise too and I would dismiss that video as junk. That’s just my humble opinion John Peter.

Very interesting, love your work overall - but did not the Nephesh of Rachel depart from her body when she died? And it came to pass, as her soul (NEPHESH) was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin. Genesis 35.18
@SuperPackerBOY5 жыл бұрын
John 3:13 and Acts 2:34. The bible is clear here. Dont add to the Bible, the verse never said specifically departing from the body. It said her soul or her being was departing as in she was dying like from age or a disease. Which led to her death. The definition of soul is your whole being not sepearate. Thats what the video just said.

I still think we have souls.. Why would god say to fear the one who can throw both your body & *soul* into hell? This was a good word study. But we I beleive we have an immortal soul since Jesus talks about it and redeems it.
@pauloffhaus40187 жыл бұрын
But what if when Jesus is talking about it he's referring to the Hebrew understanding of nephesh, as at least one previous comment suggested? Personally, I think the Greek concept of an immortal soul (the stuff in the body that endures) suggests greater independence rather than dependence on God for an existence beyond death.
@daniellep.34467 жыл бұрын
ஐCrossing.the.Cosmos ஐ “...until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” 1 Timothy 6:14-16 Another scripture to look at: “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.” 1 Corinthians 15:52-53. In Matthew 10-28, “...and fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” is talking about not fearing those who may persecute you at the time of trouble because they do not have any power to destroy your body AND soul (the breathe of God plus the dust of the ground He creates Adam from according to Genesis 2:7) but fear the One Who can destroy BOTH in hellfire. But even with what you asked, you somewhat answer your own question in a way that is contradicting, man does not have a immortal soul outside of their body if God will punish those who are unrighteousness in the end of time in hellfire, which there will be no resurrection thereafter.
@JH-dj8hd7 жыл бұрын
Bible states very clearly that no one is immortal but God. In order to have eternal life ie, immortality, redeemed humans are gifted eternal life by God, and they are resurrected to obtain it in glorification according to the promises of salvation.

All men have immortal souls. Eternal life and eternal damnation are both eternal. God cannot, I repeat God cannot undo souls. Because he does not make souls, he produces them, they come out of his being. And I'm not talking about mere animal life which is a lower level, that life is taken back without complications. But we on the other hand are fullfledged, we are images of God, we are conscious. As Descartes said, I think therefore I am. God himself is named the I AM. If I remember well it is this theology which makes sens of the hypostatic union without falling into malformed understandings of the Incarnation. WLC has done a thing on this as well. It has been a consistent Church doctrine that souls are immortal by nature. And when I say souls I mean souls in the Greek sens of the term, as we're doing theology of ontology. Do not buy into the unorthodox beliefs.

Nephesh means breather, that is a thing that breathes. and he (God) blew in his noses a living breath, and the Adam became, a living breather. Now our breather (throat) has dried up. (The throat is the instrument of breathing) There were 33 breathers in Jacobs family. (That is People who are breathing) A slayer of breathers. (That is People who are breathing) A dead breather (body). (A body functions as a breather, a dead breather is a body that no longer breathes) Let my breather (body) live, so that it may praise you. @kekistanipatriot16447 жыл бұрын
Yes! My belief is the origin is actually rooted in the Egyptian "Opening of the Mouth" prayer. In this sense, I would consider the Nephesh as the physical body or physical life - the physical "throat" or VESSEL through which the breath, the spirit (ruah) is transferred. The physical throat is no different than the heart representing emotion. In fact, it may actually be more appropriate since LIFE equals BREATH. It is therefore important to prepare for the day the spiritual breath (ruah) leaves the vessel in a gust of physical breath (Nephesh)
