Bic Xtra Strong Mechanical Pencils: a brief review

Nice review and it was great how you compared these new ones to the older model. Yes, not much has changed but now they have all the fun colors. It's no wonder kids (of all ages) are attracted to these pencils. While these can be refilled, I'm guessing the vast majority end up in the trash after the leads are used up. The amount of single-use plastic waste we continue to create is a real shame. Thanks for the review!

I like Bic mechanicals, but I find I have better luck with the 0.5mm models. For whatever reason, the 0.5mm lead is less likely to smudge on me. I'm a lefty, my hand goes over what I write. I do like that mechanicals have a consistent line unlike wood pencils, but I do prefer wood pencils as well.

What is your preference between 0.5mm, 0.7mm, and 0.9mm graphite sticks?

The larger the better, for me. So 0.9mm or even 1.3mm.

They have 0.5mm down here on the island of Mauritius. They don't have the 0.7mm and 0.9mm in our stores here. You write in Shakespearian style?

I have one of these. I prefer the Papermate Sharpwriter, because I like to twist-advance the lead. I just replaced the leads with Pilot Neox 2B grade lead, so the pencil would write darker. MUCH better. :) No more scratching when I write. No more gray instead of clear black.

These Bic mechpens can definitely last you a long while if you don't mistreat them too badly - a bit finicky to get the lead at the right length, but otherwise perfectly usable. I have one or two at my house so old that the clip came unglued, easily more than 15 years, and one at work that's at least half a decade jotting things down at the receptionist's counter. Only difference from yours here is that these are all in 0.7mm, the most popular size among Brazilians. Maybe it's because of income differences, but we definitely don't see these as disposable. Relative to our income, these Bics cost us about as much as y'all in the States would pay for a Pentel Sharp. That said, I don't like them much. Plastic-point mechpens are the kind of instrument I only use if nothing else is available.

For the price, I'd get one single Pentel P209. Unless I had to supply several writers at once.
