Bicknell's Thrush is one of the hardest birds to find in North America. It nests only on hard-to-reach mountaintops. Even when you get there, they are difficult to detect. Here's how.
Also meet Maine's other thrushes: Hermit Thrush, Swainson's Thrush, Veery, and Wood Thrush.

Last fall, hiking in the "mountains" right on the border of Maine and Quebec. (Boundary Peak area) Didn't get to see it, but I did hear the Bicknell's Thrush sing. But by the time I was able to get my phone recorder out...she stayed silent. Never fails! Liked your video. Thx for your summary.

So far, I've enjoyed them on five mountains in Maine and two in New Hampshire. Fun little guys.

I really enjoyed this video. I live in Montana and for years have heard a song when hiking that I love. I think it’s a hermit thrush, but this causes me to want to study more. Thanks for sharing your expertise and humor!

My pleasure. Birding Montana is great. I hit the Grass Lake NWR west of Billings a few years ago, and it just blew me away!

So I happened upon this video because of a fictional book mentioning Bicknell's Thrush, so I had to listen to it myself. For me, your video is relaxing and funny, lol. I definitely would love to hike that mountain top.

Unfortunately, my Lifer (and only) Bicknell's Thrushes were heard only on Mt. Mansfield in Vermont. The July weather was windy, foggy, and cold - it looked a lot like the conditions in your video - and the thrushes would not pop out. Gotta get back out east to put my eyes on one of these birds!

Had it not been for the constant presence of the Swainson's Thrush during the spring & summer months her in Oregon, my 26 years in forest inventory and timber cruising would have been extremely boring. 😐

Part of it. I grew up an hour south of there. But I've done most of my thrush-chasing in Maine, grabbing footage on four mountains nearer home. I used to do Bicknell's thrush surveys in Maine for Vermont Center for Ecostudies, so I've gotten pretty used to the little dickens.
