Bicycle crankset bolts coming loose, crank arm falling off?
This can be a very serious issue, if your crankset bolts are coming loose and probably the crank arms, both or just one is falling off.
It can be dangerous when riding, but it will also be costly, as if the crank arm is not properly installed and sealed in the bottom bracket spindle, it will get damaged, the inner part will get rounded and you will have to buy a new one.
What you need to do if the bolts are coming loose is to:
1. Clean the bolts and the spindle threads.
2. Apply some Loctite or nail polish on the bolts threads.
3. Put back the bolts but be careful not to mess up the threads, tighten them gently.
4. Tighten the bolts with a big hex wrench, not with a small one, around 40Nm.
5. Tighten the bolts even more, get a big wrench or a steel tube extender for your small hex wrench and tighten it very very strong.
Note that if the bolts are not tightened enough, they will come loose.

All sounds like great advice i will try this as my cranks keep coming loose even after some new parts. Slightly worrried that non greased threads will eventually go rusty? although i guess that is better than my cranks falling off while I'm riding...

I cleaned the whole thing and put some threadlock and tightened it. The problem of wobbly crank arm is solved, but now it makes a very bad creaking noise when I put force on crank to pedal

I can think of some cases, the whole bottom bracket is damaged. When you move the crank arms, is there any play in the bottom bracket? Or by tightening the bolts hard, you have moved the bottom bracket a bit as when you tighten it, it puts a lot of force on the spindle threads. That should be ok if the bottom bracket is fine. Or, the bottom bracket spindles are rounded. In either case, if the bicycle is old, the bottom bracket is old, you can try to spray some WD40 inside the bottom bracket area (without removing the crankset of course), not too much. Or replace the whole bottom bracket. If you have the tools. Usually they are very stuck and require to go to a bike shop.

Hey, check if the arm socket (the diamond shaped part that enters the bottom bracket) is not rounded. That might also cause the arm to fall off. Other than that, try to tighten the bolts as hard as you can.

It's fine, those bolts and the bottom bracket spindle is made of solid steel.

I did break the bolt head off by turning it as hard as possible a couple different times, as the problem was reoccurring and I had this same creaking sound as someone else commented. In my case, I think the time has come to replace the crank arm :( My bike is a cheapo though, who knows what is made of what.

I have a brand new bike assembled in the store. Took it out for the first time, pedal fell off. I was wondering if something else fell off because I thought I put it back on but it fell off again. Is there anything else besides the crank and the bolt?

Hey, the whole crank arm fell off? Then you need to tighten the bolt really hard. Maybe put some nail paint on the bolt thread. But this is not normal for a new bike. If it keeps doing that, I guess the spindle are rounded and no matter how much you tighten it, the arm will still come off.

Could it be the reason why my crank arm keeps coming loose is because my bottom bracket is wobbly? My crank arm doesn't seem rounded at all and still square so...

It could be, normally the bottom bracket should be in good condition, with no play whatsoever.

@@iczybear If it has any play, I would replace the bottom bracket anyway. You can check a few things, if the arm is rounded or the bottom bracket ends are rounded. If the bolts are tightened enough. You need to be careful, if you install a new bb and the arms are rounded, they will also round the bb ends. A bb is not that expensive, it's like 10$ cheap shimano, but depends if you have the tools and knowledge to replace it yourself. I replaced my whole crankset including the arms for about 50$. Can't say it was that cheap.

Why do you use nail polish? Can we use solvent cement instead?

No idea about that substance, but nail polish can work to fixate the bolt.

@@PSVICE bruh things dont work like that in india. The shop owners are retarded , people judge you if you buy a good quality mtb. For this same reason, the shopkeepers dont keep spare parts, its a nuisance for them. People ride on dead drivetrains here. Could find an aluminium 1 but that has a 40 day delivery estimate date, maybe that would fit. The exact shimano model i need isnt available anywhere, as confirmed ny the shimano distributor. My only bet is to try and order 2 different ones i could find and hope for the best.

I'm not sure which one is the exact size, I have a set of hex keys which I bought for like 4$ and I have all the sizes.

Maybe because of my weight that's why its always coming loose i changed crankset 2 times already and its still loosens now pretty worn out😭.. Questions: When i transfer from 3x to 1x does it fix the problem or 1bys still have the possibility to loosen

I ride standing up which puts 3x the force on the crankset, but they still work just fine, so weight is not an issue. My guess is that your hub's spindle is rounded and it's destroying the crankset arms. My advice is to go to a bike shop, replace the bottom bracket (12$ for a square Shimano type), tell them to inspect the crankset arms, if they are think they are fine, to install those, if not, replace the crankset as well. Usually a new bottom bracket and new crankset will last you for at least 10 years.

Im 155lbs and i have the issue. Its not weight i think its more just wear and tear, they loosen slowly before you notice anything. (2nd new hub)
