Good call on taking out the tent poles. Cuts down on the tent's wind catching abilities ;

Yep! Now you know why I did not camp at Furnace Creek. When I arrived on my bicycle, it was midday, and almost all I heard were generators going. Another very good video.

@@ThreeWheelJourney, I was thinking the same thing. With all those loud partying kids and generators. I would load up on water, groceries at the store, as you did Dave, and go at least two miles away from that community, and stealth camp. Having some peace and quiet under the stars.

Be safe out there. Do you really think it's necessary to lock your bike up where you camp? The cooking parts add a lot to the vlog, as does showing where you camp. Add in some quiet nature background when you hear birds or coyotes, it would be awesome...stars, too?

Wow! Having a few cold ones, and watching your last 3 videos. Fantastic! Like the way you recommend equipment that you've found to be superior. Last video: whistle pigs.....lol. I live in Ohio and have friends and relatives in Pennsylvania, and they call ground hogs whistle pigs. Btw, noticed that you're not riding your Trek 7100, and are now on a Surly. I've heard that half of America's bicycle tourers ride a Surly Long Haul Trucker with a Brooks B-17 saddle. Is that what you're using now? Noticed the high carb vegan meals - that's what I eat, lol! Thanks for the last few videos. Safe travels!
@ThreeWheelJourney10 жыл бұрын
I joined the "LHT Mafia". Saddle is the old B-17 now with around 30,000 miles on it. I intend to have it powdercoated DURING this tour... somewhere down the road

Great video. I got to hand it to you. You're more tolerant of the wind than I am. Good idea to sit it out. Guess you can't really ride in that kind of wind. Your dinners look great. Like you style. BTW: I met you a couple years ago near Craters of the Moon in Idaho. I was on a 4 day trip. Good luck. Hope to do some of those big rides soon.

I was going to ask on the last video whether there was any chance of bad winds in that area ..haha .. question answered .. and your right , why pay those prices when you can easily fix healthy nutritious meals .. safe travels mate ..

thanks Tony, one of my friends mentioned that because Death Valley is the lowest place on earth, it has the potential for having the highest atmospheric pressure. It was a tremendous wind storm, but the rangers said it was not common. When it gets that windy, I choose to find a sheltered spot and spend the day with a good book. Currently reading the Sci-Fi classic "Old Man's War"

I find brake pads just get glazed over and need to be pulled off and scuffed with a nice piece of sand paper or concrete/ pavement works to. Just try not to rub to hard or make it uneven. Plus a good rim cleaning helps too... Unless you have disc brakes i cant remember if you do or not. I also love to see the meals you make on a tour. I think it makes us all hopeful to not eat like a poor college kid haha.
@ThreeWheelJourney10 жыл бұрын
Disc brakes yup. It turns out, that my pads weren't bad, but the little spring clip (that holds the pads away from the rotor) snapped and got caught inbetween the pad and the rotor. It was making a screech, so I backed the pads off (both sides) and just used my front brakes till arriving at a bike store in Las Vegas. The food I make is simple, nutritious and cheap. Which would be perfect for college kids. But that's not what they eat... haha

Hello, Dave. I came across your videos recently and have gone thru your 2010/11 trip, and now am following this trip. After a lifetime of avid day-riding, I'm considering touring next year. I'm not an expert on videocams, but might there be something not quite right with your cam now. Things seem often to be a bit out of focus, with what I might call a hazy or gauzy appearance. I must say I very much relate to your approach to travel. Keep it up!

I really should clean the lens. My cam can shoot in 1080p, but I have it set to 720p. When I save it using Windows Movie Maker, I save it 480p because at that setting a 20 min video is about 1gb, which takes a really long time to upload. I almost never watch the youtube version when I have the highdef hardcopy on my comp (and storage devices) But I thank you for reminding me. If at all possible, do some research on the Oregon Coast Bicycle Route from Astoria to Brookings. It's the best route for a first tour.

Man i'll tell you what for someone who is out camping on a cross country trip and cooks what he has ..you make some REALLY delicious looking meals . That beheading comment was funny it's hard to imagine you getting that irritated ;-) .between those kids and the wind does not sound the like best place to camp so far ..hope it gets better for you ! .
@ThreeWheelJourney10 жыл бұрын
thanks, I learned to cook, cuz I love to eat! When I camp with other tourers, I watch what they cook and eat and it's pretty basic. Box of macaroni and cheese with a foil pack of tuna or Ramen noodles is standard. I have an interest in the culinary arts, so expect words like "mise en place" and "mirepoix" in coming cooking vids. (Ear plugs can fix alot of problems without the bloody mess)

Happy Thanksgiving! Just wondering, is there a way to cook a turkey on that burner? After seeing the great looking meals you prepare, I figure if any one could cook a turkey on a camping stove it would be you! (looking foward to you next video)
@ThreeWheelJourney10 жыл бұрын
If I was going to try and cook a turkey outdoors, I would dig a pit, line it with rocks, build a huge fire, allow it to die down to coals, wrap the turkey in 20 layers of foil, put dirt on the coals, add the turkey and bury it for 6 hours.

You sir, are in need of some Gopro! For your kind of footage it would be awesome. I like your editing, soundtrack, all of it, but as I have become a spoiled, cocky KZbinr, I expect nothing less than 1080p. The Gopro hero shoots up to 4k, so that should do the job. :) Not trying to plug a product; I'm just a happy user. Go check out some Gopro footage here on KZbin, and see for yourself.

+Stankenfrein yep.... If I used a GoPro Camera, I would have to purchase and keep at least 5 batteries charged. I will never own a GoPro because the battery life is horrible
@MarcMallary10 жыл бұрын
Are you packing that pressure cooker? Is it worth the weight?
@ThreeWheelJourney10 жыл бұрын
I choose to not bring it. I think it would be worth the weight if I were consistently cooking for 2 or 3 people. One pound of dried beans makes 5-6 pounds of cooked beans.... so the weight savings would be substantial.

Hey threewheel how do you feel about riding interstate 10 from east to west . How do you feel about Interstate 10.
@ThreeWheelJourney10 жыл бұрын
You can ride a bicycle on Interstate Highways, however you can only ride on the interstate when there is no other options. And there usually are options. If you want to ride on the interstate, go to the State's official DOT (Department of Transportation) website and search for bicycle maps. Pretty much all the states have them and show where you can ride on the interstates. If you mean riding across the entire country, you should ride an established bicycle route. In this case you want the ACA (Adventure Cycling Association) Southern Tier route. These routes and maps show where all the camping (alot for free), grocery stores, restaurants, bike shops, etc. Here's the ACA's Southern Tier website www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/southern-tier/ I've done it... it's a fine route.

ThreeWheelJourney I live in north Ga, above Atlanta and I would like to go west right in to LA . That is why I was asking about Interstate 10 plus to be able to see and ride along most of the gulf coast if that is ok.

I am curious to know how much they charge for bottled water at various places. How does the local spigot water taste?
@ThreeWheelJourney10 жыл бұрын
Jo, it's a great question, but I didn't buy any water. The spigot water is perfect with no tastes,smells or colors. The really cool machine at the visitors center is reverse osmosis and free of charge. I should have taken a look, but I usually try to find the prices for hamburgers, a dozen eggs, a gallon of gas and a six pack of beer. From that I can pretty much tell what things costs. I filled my stove at the gas station... it was .38 for a fill-up
