God bless the Dutch. I love seeing the older ladies riding along. They have to be so much more healthy than us in our motorized wheelchairs called automobiles. I hope the Dutch never let themselves be totally seduced by the automobile again, it has ruined our land, our cities and our health in most of the world.
@chorton383059 жыл бұрын
+Poppy M Like I could growing up in a small town in the U.S. in the 50's & 60's. But not any more. Even in most Southern small towns everything has been given over to the automobile and traffic is too fast and heavy.
@chorton383059 жыл бұрын
+Poppy M Sadly, Poppy M, I don't hold out much hope. Our governments at all levels are now pretty much owned and controlled by big corporations and a few billionaire contributors. Among them are the automobile, petroleum and tire manufacturers. None of them would benefit by a reduction in our automobile dependency, so not much chance, no matter what the populace might think they want. I see some signs of these same interests creeping back into the planning stages in The Netherlands also. Royal Dutch Shell, Volkswagen, Mercedes and Renault, among others, don't benefit from the Dutch bicycle culture either.
@waltertaljaard14888 жыл бұрын

@NeonGen20007 жыл бұрын
It's not exactly a choice. We are very small, high population density country rivalling third world nations in density. If too many of us drive cars our whole country becomes gridlocked. We have gridlocks every single day during both rush hours. We are just lucky that distances tend to be very short, so it's doable on a bicycle. The average distance between two province capitols is about 40/50KM. Which is about a 2/3 hour drive on a bicycle. You can drive from one end of a city to the other in 30/60 minutes in most cities. During rush hours, a bicycle is simply faster and can access more places.

If I'd seen this video 3 years ago, I'd have thought "why is it so special that women cycle, that it merits the making and uploading a video?". I lived in the Netherlands then, but now that I've been studying in London, I notice most cyclists there are young and male, and bicycle sexism is actually a thing! It's a very macho culture there, with "professional" bike commuters (often young males) and "amateurs". A bike shop for women opened there, because everything else was for men! To top it all, the comment section of that article was full of sexist comments about how women shouldn't be cycling! This is ridiculous! Am I an amateur pedestrian? In NL a lot of men and boys ride women's bikes, too. Just apply this culture to driving and you'll realise how it sounds.

@arthurw138 жыл бұрын
Stijlloosert Im not exaggerating. Its just my personal opinion. Ive been riding women's bikes all my life and to me there is a world of a difference. Its not only the frame in the middle thats missing. Something that makes it a lot easier to mount the bike. The seat on women's bike always have a different shape, the handlebar is alot closer to the seat and the handlebar is a lot more bent. And the most important thing is that the overal balance is alot better with women's bikes. I always ride with both my hands in my pockets and for some reason its a lot easier to keep the balance on a women's bike than on a men's bike.

Otherwise just being outside in public places on a bicycle should be fine. However keep in mind what we typically use our bicycles for? They are transportation, when working from home the need for that trip is gone. I know it took quite a lot of effort to change my habits during this work from home situation (that is still going on for me). What I also love about cycling over there is that people hop on and off each others bikes as passengers. Over here you would get pulled over as it's a "Must not" in our UK highway code. ***** Yes, funding is less of an issue here (I am Dutch), but especially in cities cyclepaths are often on the same piece of asfalt as the car lanes (but the cycle path has the distinct red coulor if it hasn't faded yet). And in those situations, cars and trucks often use these lanes as (temporary) parking.... very annoying. Hwving said all that, I am sure the Dutch system is better than in the US/AUS, but I'm not sure it can be implemented in a short time, as culture and distance makes these countries very different to the Netherlands...
@TrustInTheShepherd9 жыл бұрын
***** Actually the debate is about the wrong issues, the reason we have implemented the roads like this is to prevent deaths and accidents. Roads should be designed for safety not for car throughput. That is where most countries took the wrong turn, including the netherlands. We just saw what was happening and demanded action to put a stop to it. It worked with this as a result.

It was very interesting to watch for me as a born and raised Amsterdam girl as well because we often take for granted how integrated the bike is in our culture, community and city planning. The one that amazed me the most was a sensor in stoplights that can tell if it's raining or if the temperatures are low because it will give a green light to cyclist quicker if the weather is bad.

In other places, including the place I'm from, if u are in ur 30's u only get a bike if u can't afford a car and mostly u will see shopkeepers riding only. I have never seen a female in her 30's ride a bicycle over here, really. But it's so lovely there

Fun fact, the lady type bike without the hoizontal bar is the most sold bike type for common use. And this was even before the ebike evolution.
@extrastuff94634 жыл бұрын
Quite happy with them to be honest, I don't have a problem getting on a bicycle with that bar but for structural integrity of the bicycle frames it doesn't seem to be an essential component anymore. Especially when you've got larger objects on the "snelbinder" it's convenient to be able to get on the bicycle easily without having to struggle to lift your legs over the stuff at the back. When comparing frames of today with the old ones it is noticeable though that most city models use more material instead of a round hollow tube for those sections. Honestly no idea how the thickness of the material has changed, but I do know that quite a lot of manufacturers use less steel and more aluminium (or even carbon fiber for the fancy racing models). Whatever they are doing, it gets the job done and they'll function just fine.

My son even opted for a low bar type bike, because it is more convenient. He is very happy with it and nobody has ever commented on him riding a “girls”-bije

And its a corona proof way of transportation. Not only are you social distancing. At the same time you are working on your health...its good for your lungs and heart and gets your fat% down. Its a great way to keep fit especially when gyms are closed.

i. rob old bikes are called ‘station bikes’, because they get stolen all the time, when they are parked and left at the train station’s parking lots. They are handy for transportation, but you don’t lose much when they’re gone.

I prefer leg powered scouter in Hungary. Not so heavy, can be used on the pavement, among pedestrians, if there are no safe bikeroads. If it is heavily raining we can scoup it up and put it to public transport. And for shorter trips (

Would love to live somewhere else in the world where there isn't as much addiction to automobiles as here. I have several older collector bikes but wouldn't dare try to ride beyond the rural road our house is on because too many drivers refuse to obey basic traffic safety laws.
@RPhTom7 жыл бұрын
Yes, in the USA, you can get a driver license at age 16, a learner driver license at age 15 (you have to drive with a licensed adult driver in the car) and a "hardship" license at age 14 (you need to drive an automobile to help with the family farm, etc).

Riding without studded tires in wintertime? :)
@bramvanduijn80867 жыл бұрын
Always be ready to step off your bike if it slips away. In addition, when you step off make sure your leg is centered below your mass and bent. That should give you enough balance to stay upright in almost all conditions. Throw the other leg (that is still on or above the slipping bike) free of the bike and gather up your bag, coat, backpack, purse, or whatever if your can. Keep your legs bent and your feet spread out. In case of ice move towards your now fallen bike by shifting your weight, try to avoid lifting your legs if you can slide them instead. In this manner skate towards your bike, put it upright and lean on it. The rubber of your tires should have enough grip to not slip away and you can get back on your bike and continue on your merry way! PS this only works if your bike is slightly too small for you, it's a leverage thing.
I guess thats another reason why so many people (of all ages and genders) ride step-throughs, they're safer because it's easier to just jump off if it all goes wrong! And why they're finally starting to catch on as city bikes here in the UK.

This is how biking should be, as natural as walking. Simple as that. No helmet, please. Thank you for your understanding. If you want to make biking safer, do not make helmets mandatory but restrict car driving to places where no bikes are, like autobahns. Disentanglement is the solution.
