Bicycles are certainly one of the most elegant, practical, psychologically and physically great inventions of mankind to date. Thanks for the wonderful video ride and the natural sounds of the country. The mounting system and software for your camera are particularly good. I noticed no vibration in the picture even when reflections on the lens showed some disturbance and no vibration when you rode over a rough divider between lanes. Dank U wel from the south west of Canada.

Great video!! I am a design nerd so I totally took some screenshots during the video of the continuous sidewalks, raised intersections, all those great refuge areas crossing streets, and all kinds of other great features! I am trying to implement these design principles here in my town in Utah, but a lot of it is so new our maintenance staff is worried about snow plowing! Over time I think we can use the design principles from the Netherlands and incorporate here and people will become accustomed to it.

Bicycles belong. Every adult and child should own a bicycle and ride it regularly. They are healthy exercise and fossil fuels free transportation. Join in and speak up for bicycles in your community. Send a bicycle video to your local elected official or community transportation planner and ask that more bike lanes and trails be built in the comunity.

Which side of the road (where there aren't pavements) are Dutch pedestrians supposed to walk? Here in the UK we're supposed to walk on the right hand side so that we're facing the oncoming traffic (driving on the left).
@BicycleDutch3 жыл бұрын
We had a similar rule.We had to walk against traffic outside the built-up area. But the rule was abolished in the 1990s and now people can walk where they want. I think it’s better to walk against traffic and always do it myself, but obviously I’m part of a minority as you can see in this video.

The people who walk on the left side against the traffic, when there's no sidewalk, are the smart ones! 🤫 It's an old lessen! 🧐 By the way, you miss an R in the title! 😁 Thanks for the ride!✌🏼

In the U.K. it’s written in the Highway Code that pedestrians should walk facing the oncoming traffic where there is no footpath. It doesn’t seem to apply on cycle paths though where pedestrians wander about all over the place, often with an unrestrained dog or two.

Great video as always! I've always appreciated the Dutch cycling infrastructure and can only hope that the US can have something like this. What type of camera are you using to record your rides? Are you also using a gimbal to keep the camera steady? Your videos are always very stable.

Very nice ride! Excellent video for a trainer or treadmill. Is it my imagination or are the Dutch driving a little faster? Maybe the pandemic has created a sense of urgency?
@driesoostwouder29963 жыл бұрын
This is not just your imagination. This seems to be mostly outside city limits. The maximum speed limits are generally higher there. There are less other road users to avoid compared to the city center, so you can overtake other cyclists (and pedestrians) more easily, so you are not limited to the speed and cadence of other cyclists nearby. Just compare the first and last minute to the rest for a practical example of a significant increase of other road users near the city center. And regarding current events: most of the indoor sport facilities are closed, so people went outside to walk and cycle as sport alternatives. That has some effect but not the one you are thinking of. The paths just get more busy than usual. And as it has ‘only’ just been over a year yet the infrastructure is not been fully adapted to receive (more) pedestrians close to the city. If the path use change is not just temporarily and stays until the next scheduled road maintenance in that area, the pedestrians might get separated pavement or the cyclists or pedestrians get diverted to an alternative route. However that costs time and will not be done for a temporary increase in use in all municipalities.

@@driesoostwouder2996 Speaking of sports, road cycling is not the national sport of the Netherlands, in fact, is their least favorite sport. Soccer is the most popular there.

Try going by the little place of Halderen, east of Sint Michelgestel, through the forest and wetlands. I think it is more beautifull. And you can see castles and Roman remains.

There aren't any separate ways for cyclists and pedestrians. So the question that is coming. Do accidents commonly happen between cyclists and pedestrians on that area?

@@rstudio4475 The Netherland is not an utoptia when it comes to cycling, but it is by far the best place in the world for cycling. Almost every place in the country is safely and conveniently reachable by bicycle. Accidents happen ofcourse and there are developments with fast electric vehicles on the cycling paths which could lead to unsafe conditions, however you can't suggest that everything new is dangerous. You are making a lot of assumptions about things being unsafe. And what is the definition of unsafe? Some accidents you have witnessed and your personal experience? Or the overall picture, facts and scientific studies which show that cycling is very safe here? The Netherlands is constantly experimenting, researching and innovating when it comes to safe infrastructure, which is never finished. On top of that, cycling is not only a type of transportation. It also provides the opportunity for kids to go to where they want on their own, a safe and healty evironment, no (noise) pollution and to have a country which does not only facilitate car use.
@MrHenkkkie3 жыл бұрын
@Батыржан I assume you mean the first part of the video? Accidents between cyclists and pedestrians are not common. As you can see, it is an recreational route with a low volume of both cycling and foottraffic. Speeds are low, so if accidents occur they are not more than a few bruises most of the time.
