Los Angeles, CA-Very few singers ever accomplish what this soul man was able to do: create a lasting and indelible impression on listeners with only a few notes of a song. But that’s exactly what Brenton Wood did on his smash hit “The Oogum Boogum Song” in 1967. The opening piano notes and then Wood’s unique vocal still sounds brand new a half-century later.
With his two classic studio albums Oogum Boogum and Baby You Got It were digitally reissued for the first time ever in 2013 and deep soul gems from the vaults: a stirring and deeply personal version of Sam Cooke's Civil Rights anthem "A Change Is Gonna Come" along with "Diamonds," a sought-after song that is among Brenton Wood's most cherished recordings, Brenton Wood has had a career of both mainstream success and underground devotion.
All Music Guide recently wrote: “It’s hard not to hear Brenton Wood’s biggest hit, ‘Gimme Little Sign,’ and not be convinced that it very well might be the greatest single ever cut. It relies on no one thing-the song is slinky, surprising and seductive, blessed with a perfect production (the organ break in the middle is positively, eerily beautiful) and a wonderful, understated performance by Wood, who proves with his smooth, sure-handed delivery that he is one of the Brenton Wood arrived on the scene in 1967 with back-to-back hits “The Oogum Boogum Song” and “Gimme Little Sign” that would carry the then-Compton resident from a regional Southern California artist to international stardom.
The Los Angeles based independent label Double Shot Records would find immediate success in the late 60’s with Count Five - Psychotic Reaction and Brenton Wood - Oogum Boogum. A hot bed of garage rock and energetic soul mixed with a hint of doo-wop and pop sensibilities, the 7-inch/45 RPM-based label was home to a diverse R&B artist roster including signing what was their highest profile artist yet in Bobby Freeman before the influential label unexpectedly folded at the dawn of the 70’s. During this high-voltage period, Brenton Wood would record eleven 45s and two studio albums, creating a unique soul and pop hybrid style crossed with moving doo wop ballads.

Back in 1980 I attended a dance that was just playing music from the 1960s. I was just standing around bored, being my usual introverted self, when this song came on. This upbeat music motivated me to ask the most beautiful girl in the place to dance, a real knockout with movie star good looks, and she said YES. She turned out to be a sweetheart and a year later we got married and the next 30 years were pure bliss. My wife passed away in 2011 and I treasure every single minute of the time I spent with her. NEVER underestimate the power of a good song as it could change your life for the better when you least expect it.

Brother....yours is maybe one of THE BEST POSTS I've ever read in Y.Tube., and I've read and responded to a ton of 'em. Yours brought me to tears, as I cannot even imagine how I'll be if my bride of 44 yrs. marriage goes before me. God Bless you for sharing your most private of feelings with us all. By the way....you'll catch up with your little gal with the movie star looks once you cross over...you DO know that, I hope? You obviously have a bit more "work" to do before you get called back home. Tough duty in this world of today, but we gotta persevere. God Bless jbeinarizona

Brenton passed away Jan 3, 2025. This song has been a personal favorite since it was new. Despite its mediocre chart performance, peaking at #34, it is one of those songs that chart performance does not reflect its actual popularity. It was played regularly on oldies radio for decades. Still have a well preserved 45 rpm of this classic.

Today while driving my 20 year old son pulls out his phone and says, "you might know this song". I did the count down, he's saying, you know it? Then bam, the second it began I shouted Oogum Boogum! We were both enjoying and singing while driving! LOVE IT!!! He and his friends like LOTS of types of music and I love that they love the old music from the 60's and 70's!

He's one of the best, no doubt. What a voice! And he wrote his own brilliant lyrics and was proficient on the keyboards. He was a combination of all the good things gifted musical artists were then. ..very versitile, in control of his sound, knew what he wanted, and creative. A lot of his music from this period in his career sounds like early 60s - not mid-to-late 60s. Had a much older sibling that bought this record in '67/'68 - when it came out. I loved it! Played it over and over...Only now, do I know all the lyrics.

On this day in 1967 {April 29th} Brenton Wood performed "The Oogum Boogum Song" on the ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'... At the time the song was at position #77 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, eight weeks later it would peak at #34 {for 1 week} and it spent twelve weeks on the Top 100... It reached #19 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart... Besides the above "The Oogum Boogum Song", the Shreveport, Louisiana native had three other songs on the Top 100, "Gimma Little Sign" {#9 in 1967}, "Baby You Got It" {#34 in 1967}, and "Lovey Dovy Kinda Lovin'" {#99 in 1968}... Mr. Wood, born Alfred Jesse Smith, will celebrate his 78th birthday in three months on July 26th, 2019...
