Bicycles, power tools, and community: The evolution of libraries | Natalie Hauff | TEDxCharleston

For some of us, the thought of a library is a dark, quiet place filled with books and librarians issuing the obligatory “shhhhhhh”, but Natalie Hauff tells us things have changed so much. This daughter of Cuban refugees gives us insight into the changes in libraries that gives us the opportunity to be better versions of ourselves with new and modern updates. You can use the computer, obtain passes to the aquarium, borrow telescopes and even power tools as the learning experience goes far beyond the old version of paper pages of books. Libraries are adapting to the community they serve and making those connections to provide a place for all to learn by modern and interesting methods.
Natalie Caula Hauff is a Deputy Director of the Charleston County Public Library, where she directs innovative programs and services. Previously, Hauff spent almost a decade as a journalist, reporting on radio, TV and newspaper, and earned a Pulitzer Prize while reporting with a Post & Courier team on a series about domestic violence. She currently serves on the American Library Association's Public Awareness Committee, is the Chair of the Board of Director's of My Sister's House, a non-profit supporting victims of domestic violence, and serves as mentor and leadership coach. She is Cuban-American and lives in Wando with her husband, Chris, and 5-year-old son, Jonah. Libraries indeed offer a wide range of services beyond simply lending books. During my time in Utah, they provided invaluable assistance to me. In addition to borrowing books, I frequently visited libraries to find quiet spaces for contemplation and occasionally to engage in conversations with my dear elderly friend when I had no friends in my new environment The staff at libraries are so good. I deeply appreciate their empathyand patience towards people regardless of their origin. I love it!!!

I love the library. I go through phases where I am there a lot and then not go for a year. I am always so happy that they are there when I need them. I am so glad they are innovating.

Libraries provide safe nonsecular havens for victims of abuse of any kind; or rly for anyone seekin any kind of legal help or at least help figurin out how to access such resources Libraries help save lives in many ways, by connectin ppl to legal resources, and by providin a free place for ppl to just exist without bein charged with loiterin or some shite bcuz theyre homeless, and by providin spaces for ppl to teach valuable skills or to provide communiry gatherin spaces around some shared hobby (even beyond a book club; libraries have the best community hobby events where you can just go and learn or try smth new. Libraries are powerful tools in providin upward mobility and a form of a safety net for those alrdy the worst off in this capitalist hellscape we are stuck in

Imagine a college student needing a place to study away from noisy siblings, a harressed parent just wanting some piece to immerse themselves in a book or a victim of domestic abuse needing a haven to get their thoughts together in order to cope with thier ordeal - we used to have places in the UK where they could go - libraries. But they have changed. I appreciate that libraries have had to adapt - Innovation is good but sadley not all change is good. 'Quiet areas' don't work because sound travels - but providing truely quiet areas (with sound proofed walls) could give us the old libraries back and keep these new social hubs. 👍

I feel like librarian doesn't function good enough. When my English was awful, I tried to find a proofreading services in library but nobody could help. I was frustrated and felt alone. If librarian has a strong grammar you should try to help students to proof read their work.
