Brought back memories of several one-day trips I made when I lived in the Boston area. I would leave the Boston suburb about 5:30am and head south to the Cape Cod Canal and from there ride to Provincetown to connect with the 3:30pm ferry back to Boston, then ride back to the suburb. These were done years ago. Very happy to have done them when I could. Not only were they fun to do at the time, they continue to bring back memories. One of the nicest stretches of travel was along Route 6A (from the Canal to around Brewster).

Dear Noah eat energy food while you are riding. If your knee is hurting you make sure your cleats are aligned with how your foot rests on the pedal (toes in or out) not just straight ahead as an assumption. The ball of your foot needs to be directly above the pedal axle. When you were in New Britain on Vine St, you were next to Walnut Hill Park where people have been racing bicycles since the 1890s. Cycling USA racers from NYC know Walnut Hill Park well. Your route averaged 51.6 ft of climbing per mile. Which is moderately hilly. I have ridden the rail trail that you rode through Vernon, CT. Riding from Rockville through Tolland, Willington, Eastford and Woodstock is hilly. I rode those hills when I was in college. There was nothing wrong with riding through that area. Rt 30 from Rockville, north to West Stafford and you could make your way into Stafford Springs then head north on Rt 19 into Mass. But where does that leave you relative to Boston? I have been planning a ride to my father's hometown for years. It is very difficult to plan a ride through urban areas, balancing that are not too far out of your way, are safe and not too hilly. Being older I really like to plan these things out. Riding across Long Island, about the most densely populated 100 mi in America seems unappealing. There is a rail train that begins in Wassaic, NY and runs north to Hillsdale, NY. Route 22 NY - checking street-view - has shoulders and runs up a valley. You could ride to Austerlitz and further north. All states' DOT collect traffic flow and are available on traffic volume maps. The southeast corner of New Hampshire and the greater Portland Maine area have state roads that have high traffic volumes from 15,000 to 25,000 vehicles daily. I have used this data to guide what roads to avoid. You could ride in up state NY. Choose nice places from beginning to end. Be careful of what Google maps directions for bicycles suggests. It can route on to route 20 or 9 in east of Worcester, Mass. East Coast Greenway is still suggesting people ride on US Rt 40, across the Susquehanna River. They mark it as a high stress road. Plop the peg man down and realize that the speed limit is 45 mph. I would never ride that road or suggest it to anyone.
@noah-kotlarek5 ай бұрын
Dear Mark, Thank you for your concern and helpful comment. I consumed energy food high in carbohydrates and electrolytes along the ride, much more than shown in the video. My cleats are properly aligned to accommodate my pronating feet and my heels are aligned with the center of the crank. I attribute my slight knee pain which resolved by the next morning to the relatively high gearing (low rpm) I was using to climb the hills. I would have gone into a lower gear but because I did not properly fasten my rear cargo bag using a high rpm would cause the luggage to wag and bounce too much, so I was relegated to harder steadier gears. I should have tightened the bag sooner. I tightened it for day 2 and was able to use lower gears. Thank you for the route suggestions. I will consider implementing traffic data when planning my future routes. While the thumbnail features a Google Maps screenshot, in actuality I took a RidewithGPS route in hopes I could avoid some of the busier roads (not that I did not ride on some busy and fast roads). I appreciate your concern and suggestions.

Hey Noah! Loved this. Thinking of doing a similar trip next week, but breaking it up into 5 days and camping along the way. It will be in the 80s. Do you think it will be too hot to do a trip like this?
@noah-kotlarek5 ай бұрын
Ethan, thanks for your comment! Yes, you should be able to complete the trip despite the high temperature. Just makes sure to get enough fluids and carbohydrates so you stay hydrated and energized - don't bonk. It sounds like you'll be going about 50 miles per day which is very doable. Just make sure you are comfortable in the saddle. The second, third, fourth, fifth day is usually tougher on the rump especially when you first get back on it. I'd recommend picking some days this week or weekend where you ride two days in a row (not crazy distances but just enough time to get your gyatt used to the saddle, maybe 30 minutes - 1 hour of riding). If your fitness is there, the only issue should be a tender tuckus, especially if you are quite lean and don't have much adipose to cushion yourself. I try to lift myself out of the saddle to get proper perfusion to my buttocks every 20-30 minutes or so. Just make sure to announce that you are standing up if someone is riding right behind you. When you stand up the bicycle will kick back slightly and your rear wheel might hit the front wheel of the person following you. Wear wrap-around sunglasses so the sun isn't blinding you and you don't have to scrunch your face. This will reduce the likelihood that you experience cephalagia or syncope. 50 miles/day will allow you plenty of time to take breaks if needed. My average speed on the bike is 13-15mph on long trips, this is not a crazy fast average. With stops I'm usually averaging 10 mph if I'm going 50+ miles. So if I'm going 50 miles it will probably take 4-5 hours. That's the rule I use to guess how long the trip will take. You will probably have similar speeds if you've prepared and know your bicycle and equipment well. The practice rides will also give you the opportunity to work out any niggles that would have consumed time on your big ride. Please let me know if you have any more questions and how the ride went once you complete it. Cheers!!!

This is awesome. Quick question: what thoughts entered your mind during the quietest parts of this trip?
@noah-kotlarek Жыл бұрын
Hey Will, Hope you've been well. Thanks for your excellent question. During the ride I mostly think about what it would be like to live in each town, seemingly random people from elementary and middle school, how steep this hill is, what color gatorade will I get next, my parents, tobogganing down big snowy hills with my cousin, my two former lovers-of-sorts, what will I say in my narration of the video, wonder if the video should have background music, organic chemistry, maybe studying medicine, how will I force myself to study for the CPA exam, will I make the right journal entries at work, the future of the Democratic Party, cars, and my current and former roommates among other things. During the quietest parts of the trip from a decibel perspective I think "wow this is so quiet" and "geez, I just can't get over how silent it is here." The silent darkish moments, like while exiting Van Cortlant park, are the most rewarding experiences for me. During the loudest parts of the trip (from a decibel perspective) when I tearing down a hill I can't help but smile and shout for joy. I also think "well I better hold onto these handlebars tight and not hit a pothole." Ripping down a big long hill places me "in the moment." Once I reach the bottom of the hill I usually start laughing. Sincerely, Noah

@noah-kotlarek5 ай бұрын
It's the Sony CP-V5A but it has since been discontinued. I believe it was only available for sale in Southeast Asia, Japan, and Australia. It was given to me by friends living in Singapore. It was more useful when my old phone (iPhone SE 2022) would run out of battery when I was using Apple Maps for a long time. Going forward I will use my Garmin Edge Explorer 2 for navigation. This device was the cheapest I could find from Garmin that was new and had a colored touch screen. In regular battery mode the battery wouldn't last the entire day. In battery saver mode it lasts much longer so I will connect it to the Sony CP-V5A on future long rides. Let me know if you have any more questions. I'm not that experienced with GPS devices or portable chargers though.
