Gibb's free energy doesn't change discontinuously in both 1st & 2nd order phase transitions. doesn't change discontinuously means changes continuously , what simply means graph is not broken anywhere.these change or doesn't change things are about the graphs of S,V,G with respect to temperature only (under phase change)

Hi Bidhan, your lectures are so beautifully presented that everything looks pretty clear in a very short duration. It's better than many professors delivering lectures in the universities. In 2nd order phase transition u said that neither heat absorb nor liberates. But when we heat the iron , by obsorbing the heat only it's temp increases...

As per the first order phase transition that the Gibbs potential is constant. But you have represented in the graph it is changing with temperature. how??

Sir, you said in the second phase transition volume does not change, so why did you graph it like it is changing discontinuously!!!!!!!!!!

sir u say phase transition happens under constant temp but if temp doesn't change then how will it be transformed from Fero to para.. i can't understand the matter of constant temp

Its all about latent heat.. if latent heat is required(to be absorbed or to be liberated)for phase change then its 1st order.. For example- when water is heated it doesnt change to steam as soon as it reaches 100 ° C.it waits there for a time and during this time heat comes(called latent heat) but temperature doesn't increase .& slowly all of water will change to steam .. So even if temp. reached 100°C but u need to wait to see complete phase change..bcoz phase change just is not finished at 100°c but it starts at 100°c..... On the other hand..a whole piece of ferromgnetic iron changes to paramagnetic iron as soon as it reaches temp. Of 1043 k . that means here we have instantaneous phase change & need not to wait at 1043 K for phase change to happen (since latent heat not required)

Somewhere I read that "The first order derivatives of Gibb's free energy change Discontinously in First order phase transition" but you said continously..can you please elaborate.

"yes that is it.you can see that entropy and volume are actually first order derivatives of G(gibbs free energy)and u can see that they change discontinuously in S vs T and V vs T graphs..".. but G itself doesnt change discontinuously even if it's first order derivatives do change discontinuously

Thank you for such awesome explanation. Really helped me a lot....One question you said that at constant Temperature but when we heat substance the Temp changes and it doesn't remain constant ? In my understanding we are talking about lattice heat . can you please explain on this?

yes,, during phase chage T is constant and heat given to it doesnt change T so called latent heat

Aim Nthing yes,,more smooth means here more linear...transition point k is par or uspar ka slope same or almost same hota h jabki G vs T ka graph m (in first order) dono chor ke point ka slope m difference hota h....

+bidhan khirali mujhe kisi teacher ne btaya tha helmoltz energy mechaincal work ho tb use krte hai aur gibbs energy jb chemical rection ho tb use krte hai... sir mujhe abhi tk yeh smaj nhi aaya ki agar hmm baat kre free enery... toh sirf free energy ka kya matlab hai ... mujhe ek teacher ne btaya ki aap kisi system pr restriction lga do.. restriction lgane ke baad jo energy exist kregi vhi free energy hai.. sir plz mera doubt clear kriye aap.
