No actually people generally don't like to stay near metro stations but yeah those r elevated. Underground metro stations don't actually have much noise which comes to the surface. But yeah elevated metro stations and at grade ones do have a lot of noise pollution and people tend to not live close by. The rental value also makes it kinda unaffordable for residential zoning and so you'll mostly find high density commercial and stuff near metro stations.

If nobody wants to live near a metro station and it raises property values so that only businesses are nearby... who the Sam Hill is riding the train? I live in a suburb with an above-ground metro station nearby. Is there some noise? Yes, but it is absolutely a feature that makes more people want to move to this neighborhood and aside from a corner shop it is all residential all the time (to the point that it's actually a hassle to get to the nearest grocery store.) Crime isn't a big issue, it's well lit and we have a good PD. Oppertunists go for the easy target and the dingy, less used stations elsewhere absolutely qualify. Some suburbs only have outbound in the morning and inbound on the evening, and that's going to ensure that only the more affulent people with regular 9-5 hours are coming home in small numbers later in the evening. Way more dangerous than a busy train. C:S seems to go too hard IMO with how powerful the "sick from noise" is for these stations compared to real life... but hey, it's a video game and it is going to do simplified things. As the risk of mugging goes down because people aren't alone in the station the noise of large crowds and the chance of communicable disease goes up.

I think the biggest issues with that "main road" is that there are only two points of connectivity. If you add another way in from the main road to the middle up towards the park I think that would solve a lot of it. If you look at the traffic patterns it would be interesting to see how many people are coming into the area on the ends and then making an immediate turn to go to the middle. We just don't have any connectivity in the middle from the main road. Only the ends. So EVERYTHING is funneled there. Even if it was a one way in it would elevate some of the traffic flow.

Hi Biffa. I don't mean to be too critical but this is suppose to be an American / USA Style build, but this doesn't really remind me of the USA at all. The suburbs wouldn't really be that close to High Density housing. There would be more office parks, shopping plazas and so forth in the suburbs. There may be downtown business districts with shops and office space in a given area, but that's about it. There would unlikely be as much public transportation that you are putting in. Bus service would be bringing people to specific shopping areas vs school bus services that would be around neighborhoods and bringing kids to school. There definitely wouldn't be a metro in the suburbs as that's something for a large downtown area like New York City. A suburb may have a commuter rail that has 1 stop dedicated for the large suburb to bring people to downtown offices and business areas in a New York City. Trams are just not common at all in the USA as it's mostly car centric in the suburbs. Though they do exists in a place like San Francisco but they are called cable cars. Also some assets like the old brick factories and old brick houses you use in your British City build could be used in here if you were creating an older city like Boston. Lots of old areas with factories look like this and housing for people who worked in the factories looked similar. Search for US Mill Buildings if you want to see areas that look like this, they are usually always around rivers because of commerce back in the 1800's If are you looking for an accurate USA build it may behoove you to go on Googles maps and look at some cities and their associated suburbs outside of the city. I Just some thoughts, obviously it's your city and should do what you find fun.

For the traffic issue - there are only 2 roads to get into the large original gridded area and they are very far apart. I would add 2 more equally-spaced connections to that grid off the main road, as well as possibly 2 other connections off that main road to the newest high-density area. Create those 4 connections as T intersections. If that doesn't help, also delete side-road connections that are very close to the main road entry points. Lastly, look at destinations of drivers and if certain mass transit, walking, or biking options would help remove cars.

It seems like adding a few other ways to get in and out of those big residential areas would help. I'd consider adding another road from your industry area road to the first residential area closer to the roundabout. That might bring more people that direction instead of down the main road. You seemed to have solved it temporarily with some timed traffic lights, but in the long run, something else may need to be done. And eventually, some of that will be solved by another road along the railroad tracks that connects to the highway and brings people in from another direction.

To solve the traffic on the corners of the low density residential area, I think the best solution is to add another connection in the middle. As it is now, everyone going into that residential area are using those two intersections. That or use an elevated tram (I forget what those are called) to separate it from the road.

Making that outside road a massive one way system might work too. Cars left, trams right with zig-zagging traffic through it. Make the exit drop underneath the main road so they never have to cross either.

i saw a video about tram lights at a times traffic light, you can set them when there is no tram waiting to stay red

I think the main road has become a stroad at this point. Moving the trams one road over into the square would help a bit, and just have some walking paths connecting them.

In DC, there are no less than THREE roundabouts right behind the White House. Check your paths in the new part of the city that they're connected. It looks like they may not be.

I think something that could possibly help the traffic in the two intersections where the east grid (assuming the hwy is to the north) meets the arterial/collector is to deadend the first north/south running roads to increase the throat length on those busy intersections.

Love the Mississipatea name. Welcome to what is so common here in the US, city growth around a collector. City planners are getting better at this now but so many urban cities have super crowded arterial roads with direct access. Here in San Francisco it can take and Hour to just get across town that's only 7 miles.

I would removed the 2 roads on the backside of those junctions.. and the main road i would add another junction in the middle.. YA it would turn the T into a 4way But it would add access for the Hi density directly in to the low density area instead of having to do a reach round. Also i would add 1-2 more metro stops on the loop.

Alot of cars are using the suburb roads, at the end of the main 8Lane section, as a turn around because they cant make a U-turn. If you watch at 32:10, they just go around the block and join the main road again. Is there a way you could allow U-turns or put very small roundabouts at the end of the 8 lane section of road?
@sobertillnoon2 жыл бұрын
If you want to make the American roundabouts accurate you can put stop or yield signs in the roundabout so people will come to a complete stop to let another car into the roundabout.

The gap at the junction was because of people trying to turn left and keep the straight lane free. Might be a cool idea to connect both sides of the park under road if you know where I mean. Linking timed traffic lights is an incredibly cool feature. Also east to make things worse with it.

I believe that instead of the "meteorite solution", you could simply put 1 or 2 more connections from the houses-neighbors to the main central road and that would improve the flow as well... This is a solution I believe "Biffa fixing your city" would suggest! =P

I think you can place one way roads alternatively going in opposite directions after every block like in Manhattan. That way you will be able to withhold long queues inside the grid.
@501Mobius2 жыл бұрын
That game sems to generate cars to fill up whatever street space that exists. The 3 houses per block doesn't seem possible that there would be people driving enough cars to jam the roads. if there is a statistic that shows the number of vehicles on the road at any one time you probably would find that there are only 2-3 people per vehicle. And everyone and every vehicle is traveling. Just look at 31:45 there are 4-6 houses per square block but there are 20 or more vehicles on their streets. For example take any block and you will see that there are 4-6 houses but there are 12-20 cars on their streets. Biffa you need to make a forensic examination of where vehicles are going and how long they stay there.

The problem with the underground metro is that they must go very deep to get under the foundations of tall buildings. There was a law suit in LA where the Metro had to pay the owner of a 10 story building that it went under a sum of money because the owner could never put a 20 story building on that lot. (It wasn't likely so the sum was not very much.)

Metro loop vs. Point-to-Point? Well, point-to-point works better in reality but the base game has in earlier years created incentives for building loops because it does not provide a variety of transfer stations for point-to-point lines. Yes, the underground section of the Bus-Metro hub is great but you cannot have it without the bus bays on the surface. Yes, Metro Plaza is a good interchange but a smaller version would suit the early game better. I think the loop is a good match for the needs of Spring Hills - but the metro loop is copying the tram loop and I think the tram loop should be broken up into several point-to-point lines. 4 lines based on each side of the current square shape could be a good start ... and then you extend those lines. Extensions could run into the Crest and Anchor districts. 22:01 This queue is really long and even with your traffic light adjustment you almost need two lanes to turn left - mainly because you main road only offers two chances to turn left into Spring Hills. A third (maybe a fourth) chance to access the district would really help. Road hierarchy is great but it should not become an Iron Curtain or an excuse for bottlenecking. 14:24 This pedestrian crossing could really have a walking connection into Spring Hills ... or even something better: a tram-only road running perpendicular to the main road starting a new tram line that offers connections where streets are disconnected due to road hierarchy. That way could keep a stricter definition of road hierarchy but turn that into an advantage for public transport that can now offer quicker routes. 16:19 You do see, that you have this dirt path behind the commercial building? You could connect that, too. And maybe add pedestrian crossings in the area.

I probably would have swapped the Tram System out for a Monorail System, mostly because I have never gotten trams to interact nicely with traffic, so I typically either separate Trams or scrap them.

I think if you just make that first road into the troubling section one way going in and meeting in the middle to disperse into the rest of the area, it would fix it. I think the part giving you issues is that the traffic coming out of those intersections have no where to go because it's too close to the other junction. Obviously the one way roads wouldn't run into each other but it could give you a better location for services and utilities in the space where that central intersection is. I hope this made sense lol.

I think the original residential area needs more connections to the main road. That's a lot of homes/roads forced to leave the area on two small roads. Two or three more connections where the commerical strip is would probably help a ton for the traffic problems
@OldManBadly2 жыл бұрын
A couple of things: On the traffic side I think you sort of accidentally fixed a bit of your problem in adding the one way road into the high density area. Your middle / main / original road will almost always eitehr be overloaded or the roads leading to it will be overloaded because they are the only way to get in and out for the moment. For me, it might be worth it to set an interchange off the highway and send a reasonable size road between the train track and your farming area, with a connection to your industrial area, the farm, and to the "north south" road that goes past the intercity bus, train, and metro interchange in the hickory district. That would provide a secondary way in and out of the area and would help to bypass some traffic from brook heights that might want to get out of the city. The second thing is the trams. While they are nice in theory, for me the reality is that they are space hungry / resource hungry for the amount of service they provide. With a couple of more stops, your metro could service all of those people and free the roads up from the trams. I think that might have a positive turn on traffic in the area and provide your citizens faster transit from point A to point B. Finally, in your original grid, you have two roads that I think you could change a bit and make them more productive. At your two entranceways to the area form the main road, you have a residential street very close to the main intersection. I was thinking if they were changed to one way roads that only went towards the middle (ie, no cars coming out, only going in) you could remove the traffic lights on those ones and perhaps even encourage drivers to go one block further up to turn. That would give a much longer space between the big road and the next real intersection, which should help the flow. (I know, wordy, sorry!)

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but when you set the service restrictions on the back part of the city a couple of episodes ago you only restricted them to the Anchor District, which i believe was just the shopping area and not the residential area. So maybe that also contributes to the mass exodus and abandoned houses
@YoWhatGoesHere2 жыл бұрын
America has roundabouts all over the place. You don't usually recognize them because they aren't round. The American roundabout is a one way square block with no left turns.. The way it works is the left lane entering the square always has a yield marker or yield light of some kind. Exactly what type of yield marker it is varies depending on the location and the density of the traffic. (From an oldschool red triangle yield marker, to the more common white triangle decals, or the most common flashing yellow or flashing red light.) Then the traffic in the square always has the right of way to go through or exit the square. Ideally you would choose your lane while you go through the intersection. If you are exiting at the next intersection you should exit the junction in the right lane and if you aren't exiting at the next intersection you keep to the left lane. But people tend to be idiots so you can definitely see some mid road lane changes. 😄 Expecially when the lane isn't a solid line and the driver doesn't realize the kind of traffic ystem they are in. And since many people don't even know these exist, let alone spot them when they are met with one. Also I don't see why you have to choose Mississipitea over Teattle. This is an American city and Mississippitea is not a city sounding name. It seems like it makes perfect sense that this is the city of Teattle in the state of Mississippiea. Possibly in Balteamore County on the banks of the mighty Minnesotea River. 🤣

As an American I can assure everyone that we do indeed have roundabouts, although they're usually set on small streets in downtown areas or entrances to shopping centers. That being said, the American car culture of past generations and "wide open roads" has seemed to dictate how roundabouts are used, that's why seeing them on larger roads is uncommon. They interrupt our cruising and make us think when we just want to go fast lol

9:20 I've always wondered, why do you use the American 'counter clockwise' rather than the English 'anti clockwise'? I definitely think you should blow it up. It’s currently basically like a high street that’s the only connection. I think you should make it a clean road that can connect into two high streets on either side (moving everything back). Also, I know it’s American but I’m sure one or two roundabouts would help ;) BLOW IT UP!
@danielwilson63232 жыл бұрын
Worth remembering that if this is an American build you really want to avoid relying on public transportation because here in America we're allergic to it. Instead we just throw more lanes at the problem 😂
