After having played Cities: Skylines for a while - when my flatmate bought two cheap copies of Sim City 2013 and we played a little bit of multiplayer (curse you Origin downloader!) - I almost got a claustrophobic feeling. It feels so limiting and crammed (and yet at the same time sooo empty) and boring and shit. Not even worth it at a considerable discount. I wouldn't even play it, if it was offered to me for free. The ONLY upside was to be able to zoom in more and the more details at that zoom level. The downside: You can't really zoom out. Which is for the better because there are only 50 houses or so in the whole city grid. Oh, AND DON'T START ME UP on the hilariously bad and depressing region concept...

The online mode is fun to play with friends, but... When you try to play with strangers it just doesn't work because if someone stop playing their city will be abandoned and the region will be full of ghost cities. It would be cool if this was just a different mode but it's literally the entire game : /
@davidh82713 жыл бұрын
@Fondil Mahbols Yeah, it's definitely true that quite a lot has been added to Skylines by now, both by DLC and by mods. Some of the problems with Simcity got reversed too, like the speed throttling online, the overcrowded servers, the forced multiplayer, etc. I still prefer the tone of Skylines, managing a broad, sprawling city instead of a smaller, more compact set of a couple neighborhoods, but I suppose that's a matter of preference rather than good or bad.
@TheTeku453 жыл бұрын
@@Bueno_Y well you could claim ghost cities no proplem but the classic move was to let a nuclear reaktor explode so its contaminated land and could not build on that land
@johanwittens77123 жыл бұрын
@@davidh8271 You can't really call a city builder a city builder when the city size is barely the size of a neighbourhood. Really, my local city neighbourhood is bigger than an entire city in sim city 2013. The original sim city had larger city sizes than sim city 2013. And then beyond that, Sim city 2013 did so much more wrong than right, it really is one of the worst i've ever played. And i've been playing city builders since the very first sim city... I hated the stupid expansions on public buildings that made it impossible to plan around these buildings, and made the buildings consume even more precious space because all the etensions left lots of open space between and around them. The insanely limited building sizes (basically one size per wealth level, especially in plot length) immensely limited your building choices or forced you to again waste precious space. The insane agents than run to the other side of the city to collect trash because they couldn't u-turn when there was trash right across the street. Buildings that pop up leaving little slivers of useless land next to them. The useless trade system that only has one price for each resource and is almost completely useless in single player mode. Terrain editing was impossible, which is just insane in a city builder. And so on, and so on. While cities skylines was maybe a bit bare bones at launch, at least it allowed you to build a proper city. Public services functioned well, even the death care system. And i found noise pollution to be a great realistic addition to the genre. No one wants to live next to noisy buildings or streets, so why not sim it too? The terrain editor and the water system alone were fantastic in skylines with actual flowing rivers and fluctuating water levels. Heck it allows for water on different levels/elevations which is exceedingly rare in any builder game... I've spent more time in skylines' terrain editor/creator than i have in the entire sim city 2013 game. And lets not forget that skylines barely cost 35 Euro at launch, which was insanely good value for what you got at the time. Especially considering sim city cost almost twice as much for what was basically a badly made and even worse thought out small village manager, skylines was really good value for money. So it wasn't as much preference. It's that sim city was barely worth the title city builder really, no matter what your preference might be. If you like sim city 2013 as a city builder, i'm sorry to say you either don't really like city builders, or have no idea what a city builder is/should be in my humble opinion. A city builder is about building and managing a city, not about building and managing the same grid patterned small village over and over again.

On an amusing note, here in Australia, Starbucks struggled to get any traction due to an already massive coffee culture that meant local cafes were already deeply entrenched. Also perhaps one of my favourite achievements of South Australia (as a mostly South Australian that drinks excessive amounts of FUIC): In 2003, Australians consumed in excess of 22 million litres, making it Australia's best selling flavoured milk drink/milk shake at that time. The drink's popularity has more recently been reflected by some McDonald's, KFC and Hungry Jack's restaurants beginning to sell it as a part of their menus across the country. In 2008, Farmers Union Iced Coffee outsold Coca-Cola in South Australia at a rate of almost 3:1, with South Australians consuming 36 million litres, making it the only place in the world where a milk drink outsells a cola product, and one of the few places where Coca-Cola is not the most popular locally consumed bottled beverage, a feat shared by Inca Kola in Peru and Irn-Bru in Scotland and various drinks in nearly every Asian country.

Ah I remember my most profitable city I ever made. Managed to get an arcology going full of people, I then made an entire city packed with nothing but factories. This dystopian city consisted of miles of traffic with people trying to get to their job in a dense smog filled city. Eventually a ton of the workers were getting sick, so I put in a single hospital. However no one had personal cars so there was just a long line of people tracking across the city on foot while sick trying to get to the only hospital where they’ll have to wait outside for days. My budget was also insane. Something like -$500K an hour, meanwhile making a few million an hour. It was incredible
