Well, vanilla really doesn't give you the tools to properly tackle the core problem. Literally most of what Biffa does is give everything dedicated turning lanes, which requires either the perfect number of lanes (Network Extensions) or Traffic Manager. Even his favorite fix, roundabouts, don't really work right in vanilla.

Tips I would give looking at this city. 1. Keep zoning as mixed as possible. Gaint sections will only require cims to travel farther. If they can live, work, and play in walking distance, then they will. Don't make it necessary for your cims to drive. 2. Don't isolate the sections. Give as many connections between them as possible. Don't force traffic to take highways. 3. More bike and pedestrian paths as possible. Combo with mass transit. Use Metro, Trams, Trains, and Mono-rail to move large numbers of people. Have busses spread people out over a smaller area. 4. Don't do spaghetti junctions. More roads and more lanes are not always necessary. If you have to by-pass the area, then you didn't set it upright. Use Biffa's pattened lane mathematics to account for ways cims use lanes. Have lanes perform only one function where possible.
@drpancakes1622
@drpancakes1622 3 жыл бұрын
5. Add more ways for Cims to enter the city from different locations. Having too few city entries can create bottlenecks. I could only see a harbour and highway entry.
@darthkarl99
@darthkarl99 3 жыл бұрын
2. is a bit misleading, you want connections, but you also ened to make sure you don't add so many they prefer tiny back-roads to the highway.
@lucasgonzales4260

@@darthkarl99 The highway is for regional transit. If they're using back roads for regional transit, it's the highway that's improperly set up. More connections between sections the better. So long as you don't have intersections 3ft from each other, of course.
@theatheistpaladin
@theatheistpaladin 3 жыл бұрын
@@darthkarl99 No, not what I said. That one was about how people isolate sections from one another. The city has a classic modernist design. Large dedicated areas for a single purpose. That makes all ways long. In reality this creates a lot of traffic and traffic jams (and politicians who believe in "one more lane will fix it") and it does the same in Cities Skylines. What is missing in this city are: (a) Lots of public transport and biking. Trams work very well and can be supplemented by metro and trains for longer distances. (b) All quarters should have mixed commercial, residential and offices. Factories a little off (noise and pollution), but not too far of. (c) City fright trains infrastructure.
@CarinaCoffee
@CarinaCoffee 3 жыл бұрын
It's very interesting the builder went with that design for the city as the district names led me to believe they're German (the Schwarzwald for the tree farming section caught my eye first) and it's normal to have this all mixed here with lots of public transport, train connections between local and farther away areas and slightly tucked away industrial areas. You'd think that one would build inspired by what one is used to.

This city is a great example of what happens when people use highways instead of arterials and ignore collectors. All that city highway should become arterials, and then all those space consuming interchanges can become simple collector intersections, then local connections to the collectors. All of these problems were created because the city creator ignored road hierarchy.

Not just the road hierarchy, but also the lack of connectivity. Too much traffic being funnelled through a single junction instead of distributed across multiple options. It's really interesting to see a city where someone's clearly watched a lot of your videos, has tried to take your advice, but misunderstood something at some point or another. I think it's a really relatable thing where as a beginner you might follow advice without really understanding the core logic thread behind the advice, things you pick up with much experience. It's applicable to every field really, I'm in software development and while inexperienced people can certainly solve problems eventually by simply copying code samples from stack overflow, taking the time to break them down and figure out what they're doing to understand the concepts going on is invaluable. Fascinating case study in this video, thanks Biffa.

Love watching you fix cities Biffa. My roundabout question is "why only 1 lane off?" I found that "straight, straight+right, right" is better than "straight, straight, right". It means that two cars can get off the roundabout, or the one in the middle can go straight. Lots depends on the roads off the roundabout, you would need two lanes off and map them properly.

Another fun fix, and a great example of what some good mass transit can do. One suggestion for the user that I haven't seen in the comments is to connect the islands with a few bridges/tunnels, and use the waterways for some ferry routes. People really complicate themselves with the metro lines. My way of doing it is this: have the city segmented in areas somehow and put a metro loop inside of each one placing stops near to another's loop stops and a couple in the middle, so citizens can jump from loop to loop and travel across the whole city without the need of using cars. If one loop is too far apart from the other, i just set a straight line of metro tunnel with 2 vehicles going back and forth so they can do the jump. Also, using a train line around the outside of the city with a stop in every area on the edges also helps massively. Also, pedestrian walks are your friends!! Ask them for help!!

@@reinerjung1613 i have 2 lines per loop (learned it from Biffa), clock wise and anticlockwise. Bus lines for example, i use them, yes, but only a few and in really small areas to cover local transit. For example, to me, a bus using a highway is a no-no. Wow, that was a hard one, so satisfying to watch it fixed. Appreciate the effort you put into this awesome channel! Just wondering how would multiple straight ones across the section work better than a large zig-zag loop for metro? I have always been struggling to get my metro coverage up high.

That was an amazing city fix. Really demonstrates how road design and mass transit have a huge impact on traffic flow. Also, I never use the clover leaf junctions in my cities. They seem to be the single biggest cause of backups.

There is something so satisfying about watching the traffic start to flow again. Everytime I build an area in cities skylines I always end up spending an hour after making each area okay for traffic!

This was a really straightforward city fix, Biffa. The additional four way elevated median road helped with moving the traffic, along with the new metro stops and lines. Maybe a monorail line would have helped even better... 🤔

In my city I have mild congestion mostly at busy roads joining onto a busy that goes onto the Highway. But I do have metro, trains and buses ferries and an airport which are all free.

Ah, I love community city fixes! A great example of how TMPE doesn't just magically solve traffic problems. Reminds me of a city I once built specifically to avoid any kind of traffic jams, with intricate one way systems, lane mathematics etc., everything thought out. Turned out to be the worst city I ever built. Garbage trucks were unable to find efficient routes to all the neighbourhoods, endless streams of trucks ran through quiet neighbourhoods because the intended route took too long, etc. Had to abandon it eventually. Options, traffic needs loads of options to get anywhere. If they do, a few wonky junctions won't need to process that much traffic and give you some leeway in designing them. Very educative as always Biffa.

Biffa changes all the directions for getting onto the platform, but gives them the arrow to only cross over by saying they need the direction so they don't cross over. Well done 😏

Walkways! The cims want to walk. They will walk up to 120 units to a bus stop, subway, their destination, or any combination of other mass transit station/stops that will take the cims to within 120 units, after that they will drive the entire way. That's my two farthings worth. Love the videos, thank you.

This city is just a lesson in pointless redundancy. So many failed attempts to bypass traffic, when all you did was move it off the highway and into some dinky underground tunnel that becomes the new stuck point. Road hierarchy and real junctions fix almost everything.

Running an elevated expressway through an urban park! It's a good thing you're not a real city planner Biffa! Great video. Rather than building the expressway you could have just set up a Park Avenue type road along the edges of the park (with one way roads in each direction). This would be much better for a city centre but still allow you to zip through to the motorway.

Before you add lanes to a road in order to fix a traffic jam, try this one trick: imagine Biffa just appeared in front of you and is demanding an explanation. If you can't cite a specific way it would help (other than More Lanes = Less Traffic), don't do it!

Cause you prefer not to mess with city design and save yourself some time, there are cases like this one, were the city does not have proper road herarchy. For a city like this I'd go with a different approach and repurpose some roads (mod roads to avoid destroying city layout) The lack of connections between sections is overloading the usage of nearby highways. Again, nice work done as always. Hats off.
