It's 2021 and this is the only YT video I found that acknowledges that the Bi-Fold Door repair bracket exists. I was able to source the 1-1/8" version for my door from the same manufacturer (Prime-Line). Thanks again.
@davemaggy63668 ай бұрын
I believe you are installing the bracket backwards. The MDF is only filling the ends of the door, but there is solid wood on the long edges of each door section. You can see the end of the wood. If you flip that bracket around so it is somewhat even with the edge of the door, then you can scew into solid wood and the larger hole will be perfectly positioned for the pivot or roller piece. That is how they designed these brackets to be installed. They never intended for you to screw into MDF which is why they only provide one screw hole, and it stays positioned with the help of the bent edges. I have seen several of these videos and they all install them incorrectly and end up having to use other hardware to secure the thing.

I loved the way you improvised the repair with the toggle-bolt secure fastener; it was much better than a scrawny screw. Rental property can take quite some abuse from the most well-meaning tenants. It’s better to reinforce and/or protect the things you have to repair with extra secure measures. 👌💪🏽🤓

Home Depot does not have those parts in stock at the store, but they can be ordered online and you can use their free ship to store to avoid shipping charges if you do choose. And when you look up that part through Home Depot, you get some other options that are similar for repairing bi-fold door corners.

appreciate this video so much and am trying it out! I experienced a few minor hiccups: - first, the bracket was not available in my country - I had to order it from Amazon from a US shop and pay a lot for shipping. but still cheaper than buying a new door of course! - Second, the bracket was an almost impossible tight squeeze and I finally managed to hammer it to slide onto my door but the "slide" motion of the tight bracket scraped the excess surface in the process (but not too noticeable from a distance considering the location of the bracket) - third the bushing for a 3/8" pivot was too big to catch onto my existing pivot. but it did not have a plastic anchor. I have ordered a new pivot that comes with an anchor and hopefully that will fit into the bushing. In my country all of the pivots online locally are listed in metric so I ordered a "1cm" and hope that is equivalent. Updated to add: it worked! a "1cm" pivot and plastic anchor set fit into the bushing and the door hole and all is well. So much more affordable than purchasing an entire new door.

Great tips, especially about using the bracket and attaching it with a toggle bolt, and using a saw horses to support the door while repairing it. It's hard to work on these doors while standing on a ladder. Two questions - First, would it help the longevity of the repair if Bondo was used as a filler in the wallowed-out hole in the MDF to reduce the wear and tear on the plastic bushing that goes through the metal bracket? An easy repair when the door is laying flat on the saw horse. Second, are all toggle bolts of the same strength and durability, or should we DIYers be looking for high-strength toggle bolts, to reduce the frequency of future repairs and/or door adjustments? Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video! P.S. Sometimes, a coating of thin CA glue will firm up a weakened wood substrait; and since MDF is made of wood fiber glued together under high pressure and heat, it seems that an application of CA glue could strengthen the whole area around the wallowed-out hole in the MDF.

If you turn the bracket, then you can screw into the solid wood part of the door?
@EverydayHomeRepairs6 жыл бұрын
Hey Crypto430, Yeah, screwing into the solid wood opposed to the MDF board would make for a more secure hold. I think you could do this with the bracket I used in this video but you might need to trim the bracket a bit and drill a new hole for the screw to ensure the bracket does not have an overhang.

Thanks for the helpful video! Like others I didn't know those repair brackets existed so very good to know. Only thing I am wondering is whether if you had rotated the bracket 180 degrees so the small mounting hole was aligned with the solid wood on the edge of the door if the large hole would have aligned with the damaged hole where the pivot pin fits. If so, there would not be any need for the toggle bolt. Either way, very good to know!

Hi Scott, thanks so much for the video and say you got an instant sub when I saw how you mounted that bracket. I was wondering if you might be able to provide some insight into a slightly different issue with a bi-fold a friend asked me to look at. The door came off at the roller end due to a bent track, and the pivot popped out. Everything looks good after I straightened the track, but when I seat the pivot side onto the floor bracket, the spring loaded pivot doesn't reach the top mount point. The pivot spring is fine and fully extends, so I can't fot the life of me figure out what's wrong because the only damage was the bent track. Any ideas for a fix? Much appreciated! Edit: forgot to add, the top pivot mount hasn't moved at all, it's still nice and secure and perfectly aligned with the floor mount point.
@stevebabiak6997 Жыл бұрын
I have had this. I will tell you how it might have happened - carpeting may have been there previously and removed; the door was cut short to slide over the carpeting. The fix is to remove the floor bracket and put a piece of wood underneath the floor bracket when you reinstall the floor bracket. It elevates that corner so that the pivots engage as they are supposed to.

@RonaJ6 жыл бұрын
The side of my door with the wheel just hangs free, is the wheel supposed to actually snap into the track? The bifold panels are definitely not square. The left side is 1 inch higher than the right side which leaves the door dangling. Because of the 1inch difference, the wheel doesn't really do anything.
@EverydayHomeRepairs6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rona J, yep the the wheel should fit into the track and that is what will ensure the bifold door opens and closes properly. Often these doors can get misaligned because the adjustments either weren't done properly initially or have moved over time. Take a look at this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHizqmqwatSogs0 which will show you a couple adjustment points that should help you get that wheel back "on track." 😉

Why not flip the plate 180 degrees and just use the supplied wood screw into the door's vertical stile? Probably will be solid wood.
@ericspfd15 жыл бұрын
An easier way to do the repair is to cut the fiberboard out with a razor knife and glue a solid piece of pine in it's place. The whole repair takes about 10 minutes not including glue drying time.
@EverydayHomeRepairs5 жыл бұрын
Hey Eric, great tip! Do you usually put staple through the fiberboard into the piece of pine then let the glue setup or just glue?
