Ken, that is a WOOD GASIFIER stove. The holes around the bottom let air come into the space between the walls and get superheated as it warms up. Then the draft causes the air to rise and exit through the holes around the top of the inner wall which helps to reignite the gases (smoke) that are trying to escape. The design makes the combustion much more efficient. You get more heat from less fuel and almost nothing but ash is left at the end. You will always get smoke at the beginning, If you are getting much smoke after it gets going, that probably means you have too much fuel for the most efficient burn.

Not being an expert in anything in particular but I am thinking that the fire needs to burn down to coals and then put the grill on to cook. That would save the deformation of the grill wire as it is thin and therefore the excessive flames and heat will bend it. A pair of welding gloves would be a good accessory when you wanted to lift the grill.

Ken, the way you set your wood stove is like the cover of the booklet, But watching vlogs of people using them they had the top piece turned upside down like a funnel and it seemed to make the airflow better and when they put the rack on it was across the top .
@kenskarpentry3 күн бұрын
Oh. Interesting
@Itsa_Mea3 күн бұрын
The grill rack isn't applied until the fire reduces to hot coals, then cook over it. The smoke less part is the fact the fire creates its own draft and venturi effect through the breather holes so it reburns the smoke and creates a very hot fire in comparison to an open burn. I am a fabricator so I designed my own utilizing a 55 gallon drum cut in half. Works awesome!

Well my mom, God rest her soul, taught me how to build a fire as a young child. I think what is happening is you put too much kindling into the new fire ring and just like any fire, fireplace, wood burner, wood stove, etc. the initial fire is going to be too much. Kindling should be a way to start logs or get a small bed or coals and in this case too hot. At my cabin I use just enough small pieces of wood to start the small logs above then get to a point of having about three logs which make a good steady fire of resonable size. Just my 10 cents worth. Here in Southwest Ohio the weather has just began to be right for my wood stove heat which I certainly enjoy with a cup of hot coffee. Enjoy all your videos love the Vardo.

With the reburning of the wood gasses that recirculate, it does indeed smoke less but is not totally smokeless. That curved ring also channels the heat upward like a chimney so less smoke at eye level and in your face. On your Wi-Fi issue, most in your rural area wont reach the street. I know at my house it's only good for maybe 50 feet at best so kinda hard to get hacked in a drive-by situation.

Actually that smokeless device is working very well after it gets going. I'd say it's by then 80-90% smokeless. Smoke is just unburned, lost fuel. Due to the construction and the double wall allowing air flow the smoke that is normally almost completely lost in an open fire is ignited due to the heat and the airflow. Brilliant device. I'd use the grate only after the fire has largely died down (or even better use it with charcoal). The Vardo is getting very beautiful. The wood paneling inside looks great too!
