Since Adobe has gotten shady about its stances on AI, how they opt you into machine learning, etc, I agree. Procreate is buy it once and own it, plus their stance on AI is “never doing it” and that’s clear, concise, easy to support info.

This may be a weird comment, but I think it has become more of an ethical choice at this point (although many of us don’t actually have a choice to begin with since our jobs revolve around using the apps in Creative Cloud working in a team)… I’ve been experiencing with both Procreate and Fresco, and both are amazing tools. I feel like whenever I want to sketch more freely I tend to choose Procreate. Fresco is becoming my go-to when I need vector art really fast, because sometimes I just dabble a bit too much with Illustrator’s curves and anchor points when working on my desktop. That being said, my problem with Adobe has been it shoving AI down our throats, and the shameless way they have been doing it. At the current state, I don’t like most of the Gen AI stuff, and it is not even needed or used in my current workflow. I personally think it was a very bold move from Procreate to stand against AI “art”, and I will always support their courage especially being a small team competing against a massive corporation like Adobe. As always, I have enjoyed the video and all the info you share, Chris! Thank you very much, and keep up the great work. Love your channel!

I’m on this side in terms of opinion. While I’m using Adobe because I need to for work, and I don’t think there’s some moral failing of those who do too, I appreciate Procreate way more and want to actively support them and artists who provide resources for the app.

Maybe. Maybe termporarily? I would look at Adobe's longterm behavior. My gut feeling, and I'm wrong most of the time is that once there's no more/less competition they will go back to their regular behavior and start charging again.

This is great news! 🎉 I hope they continue to update Fresco now that it's free. I think it's been a year now since I've switched from Procreate to Fresco. Your videos have helped a lot with that transition. I was even able to try some animations thanks to your tutorials. Much easier in Fresco than Procreate. One of my favorite things about Fresco is all the free brush packs they continuously release. For my current project, illustrating a children's book, the Summer 2023 brush pack has provided a lot of inspiration for using brushes in creative ways.

Hello Chris! I'm starting to use Fresco on my iPad and also on my PC. It's really cool! I'm an old dinosaur who's been using Illustrator and Photoshop since the 90s. I recently tested Clip Studio, which has really good rulers that I can't find in any other software. It also has vector brushes. But Fresco has a more minimalist interface, reminiscent of the excellent Sketchbook Pro. However, I think the issue of interaction between Adobe's other software is very important. Despite the recent problems with AI, Adobe continues to evolve and add amazing tools to its apps. Illustrator has received new items that will certainly be very useful for the illustrator's day-to-day work. A big hug and congratulations on the channel, which I always follow! From Brazil!!

Be careful with CSP's "vector" layers. Yes, CSP promotes having vector but it's not actually vector. It's more simulated than native. You can zoom in and see the pixels after exporting. Just forewarning you. I use Fresco for anything I'm doing vector... Nothing beats Native vector being hand drawn. Just make sure all your sizing and ppi/dpi are right in CSP, that's the best backup for printing, like a failsafe. If you go 5-10k pixels with 600 dpi, you can print damn near anything, regardless of other settings.

I’m an artist that does typographic portraits…. and using Fresco has been a game-changer for me. Vector is so needed for my work (for both screen printing and the ability to enlarge the final art at a moments notice. I did a portrait of Bob Dylan as a limited-edtion screen print that the Bob Dylan museum sold… and then they decided to make it part of the architecture on one of their walls. I just sent them the file… and they were able to do the rest. I still love ProCreate and use them for my other kinds of illustration, too. So having both is a full tool kit for me. My gripe with iPad illustrator is that it doesn’t allow that quick delete of overlapping lines like fresco but fresco doesn’t have the shape tool like “elipse,square etc…” Hopefully they combine best of both or just make one overall app

Honestly, I’ve tried both. I’ve tried to keep an open mind about Fresco and I understand it has its good points with vector and animation, what it comes down to is I just prefer the way Procreate reacts to the pen on the tablet. It just seems smoother, reacts better, quicker, more precise. I can’t put my finger on what it is exactly but to me, it just draws better.

Great video! I discover Fresco about 1,5 year ago. I took your skillshare class and it changed everything. Animation in Fresco is so much better than in procreate. There is only one thing I'd like to have. In skin onion mode the previous frame can only change opacity, I'd love if it can be in different color like it works in Adobe Animate for example.

Adobe has always had free apps available, a notable one that I often use is Capture. Fresco has always been 90% free, it just had a premium version that allowed you to import brushes for $10/year… which is minimal to say the least for such a powerful application.

I always loved using Fresco and now seems the recent update removed the ability to send vector drawing which is drawn beyond the art board on Fresco to Illustrator desktop or iPad without cropping it! It just crops the drawing which is beyond the art board during import.

Im here trying to learn Adobe Fresco purely for the reason you highlighted it supports VECTOR artwork which is what I need for T-shirt and Sticker printing (yes I know I can still use pixel format for printing - but vector is going to be way better longterm). Procreate was my initial choice because its simple and easy to use. I'm finding it difficult to recreate the same work in Procreate in Fresco

That's not how it works. The AI model is only for Adobe Express and Adobe Firefly, it doesn't take your original artwork and train the model when your art is already protected by Creative Commons without having to get every piece of work you do copyrighted

I prefer Fresco for the realistic oil and watercolor painting experience it provides, and making it free is going to be a good thing in the long run especially because subscription-models on apps across the board are starting to see a growing pushback movement from customers lately, and Adobe is one of the big ones often called out on it, but in terms of Fresco, I am actually still surprised by how many people don't even know about it. You say Adobe and most people immediately just think Photoshop, Illustrator, or Lightroom, maybe making it free and giving it some more promotion might increase its user-base.

Is Fresco still under active development? Kyle Webster, one of the main drivers behind the project, left Adobe and is now working with Procreate. Although the deal is great, Fresco still does not feel natural to me. I have Clip Studio and Procreate and these just connect more to the way I work. As for the integration: if you are a CC subscriber this is a nice thing, otherwise the process is less smooth. Anyway I do not really trust Adobe anymore to do many good for the creative community so I hope this is not a poisened chalice...

Cool! I’m glad it’s more accessible. I dabbled with Procreate for years but Fresco clicked way more trying it again a few months back and has become my favorite drawing tool. Any recommendations where to find some good vector brushes? I grabbed Chris’ sharpie brush pack but haven’t been able to find many others. My understanding is that it used Photoshop brushes for pixel art but does it use Illustrator brushes for vector art or do they need to be specific?

Unfortunately you can’t currently import vector brushes (aside from presets like mine). I think this has to do with the fact that illustrator uses stroke and fill whereas fresco vector is just shape based. There’s likely not a lot of other presets (if any) because there’s only so much you can do without being able to import shapes to use with the vector brushes and I don’t think people know you can save out a library of your brush presets. I sort of figured that out by accident.

My main issue with Procreate is just a lack of basic stuff, which makes doing some things needlessly hard. Wanna do a quick drop shadow cause the text doesn't stand out from the background? You gotta do that by hand, 1989 style.. There are some things that are just straight up missing in Procreate that I don't think will ever actually be added. I still use procreate more than any other app, but there is a lot of tedium there, and I've been moving into Fresco more and more again. Now that it's free, I think Procreate needs to move forward pretty quick to not lose users. The advancements in Procreate Dreams also needs to speed up a lot, cause the software itself is super cool, but again, features are missing. Can't even select a bunch of clips/pics on the timeline and move them all at once yet. That's one of those insane things that the Procreate devs seem to just glosss over, almost as if they never use their own apps... They also need to fix the animation recording feature, cause small movements are just straight up not recorded at all for whatever reason. Anyyways.. I hate Adobe and I would love it if Procreate and Dreams was better.. That's all.

I pretty much started digital illustration since 2010 and got more into it in 2016 just for fun. I have been drawing using only Adobe Photoshop since I’m an interactive designer and I use my desktop and my laptop and a Wacom tablet. I recently bought an iPad last year and instantly bought Procreate and the Apple Pencil so I can go to places without lugging my bulky laptop case. I have Fresno since it came with the bundle but never used it. I absolutely love Procreate and it didn’t take me long to find all the tools to go to Photoshop and Procreate. Is Fresco similar to Photoshop and Procreate? I could check myself but I don’t want to dive in since I have been busy and most everything I have now is in Procreate, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

I think because Fresco was built from the ground up for the iPad that physical buttons and traditional (non gesture) weren’t considered. It would be cool to be able to set them up though. You should put in a suggestion in the app!

I started using Fresco only because they discontinued Adobe Draw which was free as well and nobody complains about free software just like how the Affinity software was free on mobile when they first released. What I do like that Adobe did was it imported all of your work done in Adobe Draw and you can seamlessly pick up where you left off in Fresco. Lastly folks just need to pick what software works well for them and the work they do and not bash the others for the sake of content. This was an honest review of what works for you and not a bashing session which I appreciate that you're not like other content creators whining about software nobody is forcing them to use

This is absolutely fantastic. I already subscribed to the full thing (thanks to your videos), but I have questions (though not really expecting answers, just voicing them). Like why now? Since when does Adobe make anything free just because it's 5 years old? Is Fresco being sunset for something else? Is there something like a Fresco *Pro* coming? Are features no longer coming to Fresco? (I've noticed that "what's coming" page has gotten very quiet and has been for a while) For those of us who were subscribed, what happens come renewal day? Do we have to manually unsubscribe or be charged again or will it not matter? (my iPad says I'm still slated to be charge $10 for the renewal ) Does the free version still include the 5GB(think it was 5?) of cloud space (I can't find this info on the site)?

From what I understand, Fresco was a bit neglected in terms of promotion-maybe because people were slow to try it-but now it’s become a priority and the Fresco team is very enthusiastic about the app and continuing to improve it. It’s definitely not going away or being replaced. I don’t know for sure how the subscription thing will work, but I’m fairly certain it’s just going away, so it won’t have the option to renew, it will just be free. Good question about the storage. I’ll see if I can find anything out.

Sure thing! Adobe Sketch and Adobe Draw weren’t necessarily kicked to the curb, they were combined to form Fresco. When it was in beta it was called Project Gemini (the 2 parts being draw + sketch or vector + pixel).

As someone that has actually been commissioned by Adobe to create art for campaigns they were doing, they required much more specific rights granted to actually use my work. The rights in the TOS are specific to their use within the app and the way you interact with it, IE generating copies, previews, etc. If what you were saying was true you can bet big companies wouldn’t still be building their creative within the Adobe ecosystem. Dig into the TOS for nearly any other cloud based apps and you’ll find similar language.

I absolutely love Fresco, HOWEVER! I haven't found a way to export SVGs without an Illustrator subscription and that bugs me. Am I missing something?

This is a typical way in which Adobe links the free Fresco with the paid Illustrator on the ipad. The only option is to export it as a PDF and then you can edit the graphics in Illustrator as elements, not as paths (which makes sense as Fresco doesn't recognize paths). In this respect, exporting Fresco from the Ipad to Illustrator makes no sense either. The only sensible thing to do is to finish the graphic in Fresco and export it. What I find worse, however, is that Fresco has such poor import options.

I talked to the Fresco team about this at Adobe Max and it seemed like more of an oversight than anything else. I think that an SVG export option should be coming soon.

I’ve tried Adobe Fresco a few months ago to do some animation, but unfortunately, the animation took a lot of space on my tablet…. And I had to delete apps on my tablet just to make room for the animation. Procreate doesn’t have this issue. Is there a way to do something similar on Adobe Fresco?

That doesn’t make sense. Adobe Fresco utilizes the creative cloud for file storage and Procreate saves everything locally on your machine.

Currently the only way to export a vector file without sending to illustrator is as a pdf. I did however bring up the need for an SVG export option when I was with the team at Adobe Max and they seemed onboard with making it happen.

Left very bottom of screen (brush settings)> Shape dynamics> Minimum diameter - set to 100% Or Size control - set to none Or Practice and patience. Maybe try a drawing glove Or increase the smoothing -on left 3rd from bottom

If you hold down at the end of your stroke, a perfect circle /straight line / polygon will snap into shape. You may have to turn it on in your settings: App Settings > Input > Snap to Shape. Also, there is a lasso tool and paint selection brush.

@@AlisonBentley-c9p thanks! Quick shape just takes bit longer on fresco. With lasso brush i didn´t really mean lasso selection but similar action that automatically fills the selection. Very handy for quickly blocking shapes. You find this in many apps: infinite painter, artstudio pro, clip studio and krita. Also is wonderful eraser.

Adobe doesn’t use customer work to feed their AI, that said, you can turn off all data collection by logging into the Adobe site and unchecking the box in the privacy settings.

Adobe-hating is the current “rage.” Six months from now it will be something else. Meanwhile I will continue to use Fresco as well as Procreate, benefiting from each of their individual strengths. Ironically, one of the features I like best about Procreate is it sophisticated tools for using color, complementary colors, etc. Fresco is clunky by comparison. Also, I find Fresco’s brushes (both the company’s and third-party brushes to be cleaner and better than Procreates. Plus Fresco’s automatically savaging files to the clouds, making them available on whatever machine I am using, wherever I am, it a huge advantage.

I think part of this could have been influenced by how poorly it was communicated and also Adobe not really promoting Fresco up until this point. It seems like it’s getting more attention now and them making it free for everybody is pretty great. I met with the team at Adobe Max and they were all really excited about Fresco and just generally super nice people genuinely interested in my experience with the app and wanting to know all of my feedback and suggestions. It was a very positive experience!

Fresco is free. The brushes from premium are now included in the free version. Any other subscriptions have to do with storage/Creative Cloud/Adobe fonts.

The only rights they have access to are the rights to use your artwork within the app the generate thumbnails for you, copy and paste, etc. It’s standard cloud based app stuff.

I think it’s more of a response to going a bit far in the Ai direction and wanting to correct a bit back into the pure creation direction. Fresco was a bit neglected in some ways by Adobe but it’s become a priority now. They’re working on all kinds of updates and new features. I got to talk with the whole team at Adobe Max and it was all very positive.

the issue with adobe is that they are using data for AI harvesting, making it free now that the app is irrelevant because of mass migration to procreate is just another way of collecting user data and profiting from it.

That is just boiler plate stuff that cloud based apps all state. It just gives them the rights to generate thumbnails/copy+paste etc. as someone that has been hired by Adobe to create art for campaigns in the past, I know they had to request more rights to actively use my work outside of my in app usage.

I’ve been waiting for this video because I absolutely love your videos your art style your humour every thing it’s so easy to watch you’re videos. I was really hoping you’d express your feelings on the main controversial topic being adobes claim on everyone’s work. I love adobes tools and easy use software I’m sold. But everyone seems scared of this claim to the rights of your works. How do you feel about this, is this actually not a big problem and why is that? It would be so helpful to hear the counter argument as it’s the only problem I personally have but really most people have? Honestly no hate I just would love to hear a counter argument to justify handing over rights to my works.

Thanks so much! That stuff is pretty boilerplate for cloud based apps. My understanding is that it relates to using the artwork to generate thumbnails/copy and paste/etc and is required because of the cloud based environment. As someone who has been commissioned by Adobe to create art for ads/etc. I can tell you I had to sign further documents for them to use my work outside of the use cases in the agreement. If they had the ability to do whatever they wanted with me work, they wouldn’t have needed further permission to use it.

Thanks for replying. It really helps to have two sides to an argument before deciding my own stance it was overwhelming to see only the upset. Adobe seem pretty quiet on the matter too understandably but it’s reassuring to see people especially yourself still trusting the program to have customer and clients interest mind. Do you think this format of asking further permission will still stand moving forward and are you confident you’ll get just as much work or are you afraid at all that adobe and other brands will just opt for using AI instead of paying artists?

But the great brush creator master Kyle T.Webster has left Adobe for Affinity or Procreate. I am paying 160 euros for my Mobile Bundle per year. I wish they would make possible one day 3D animation with zooming on Fresco like Nomad so that I can put my dresses and appearances/textures on my characters and add all suitable tools of Ps onto it. And something like new 3D tools from Illustration. So that they can move like real. Thanks, if some creator is reading our wishes, and I wish they will come true.

Kyle currently works at Procreate and is doing amazing stuff there. That said, he created a lifetime’s worth of amazing brushes for Photoshop/fresco which are all still available and not going anywhere. Not to mention all the brushes that have been created for years and years long before iPads even existed.

For me fresco is not working , there is a lag on every stroke which makes it useless, even using pencil is a pain, there is a post in adobe community about the issue but there is no solution, even its free I cant use it , sad.

Are you sure you don’t just have the smoothing all the way up? I just made a video comparing a bunch of iPads for illustration and used Fresco because it’s my main app for all my work and it worked flawlessly even with large files with a ton of motion on a 6 year old pro and even a previous gen Mini.
