Something else to consider when talking about an extended stay on the ISS is age. The average age of an astronaut candidate is 34. Williams is 58 and Wilmore is 61, we've all read about the effects an extended stay in space has on the human body and while both astronauts are in great shape there's no getting around their ages and that those effects will probably hit them harder than someone in their 30's. They're both supposedly "retired" and had only planned on being up there for 8 or 10 days originally. 60 is by no means old but it's also not 30 or 40, that's just a fact of nature.

I gather from a more factual YT channel, that suits are not necessary for the return voyage. They have some purposes in emergencies, but one could do the trip in regular clothes. Re NASA at other times being prepared to push the 1 in 270 risk limit: um, I doubt it. It is key metric for crew safety, and I would not think NASA would subject crew to higher risk if avoidable, if only for the pushback in the event of a problem. Of course, assessing such odds is not possible with any serious precision. Plainly there is a lot of scope of assessing one situation or another as lying on either side of that number.
@art.is.life.eternal2 ай бұрын
Correct. These are IVA (Intravehicular Activity) suits, and are not NECESSARILY needed. They are thin, and serve only as an additive safety factor. Better to have them than not, but if it was me, and I was weighing the difference between returning on a leaking POS bucket, or a 100% safety record crewed return module from SpaceX, the decision wouldn't be too hard.
@uzlonewolf2 ай бұрын

You are in error about the ISS.. There is constant voice and/or data vommunications with the ground 24 hours a day between the crew and ground controllers and the families of the past, current and future crews when necessary. If an astronaut wants to "phone home", they are more than welcome to get on the secure comms net and make that call. Secondly, the Starliner crews are tasked now to assist station members with experiments, cleaning chores and maintenance of that space station while waiting to go home. They are in no way stressing or bored while on orbit. Both are not new to living there. The Station is designed to accommodate up to ten crew at any time to accomodate exactly this situation. Russian, ESA and NASA Ground replenishment visits resupply the station regularly year round. No one is going to starve up there anytime soon. Read up on this the next time you decide to talk about this subject. I am happy to school you on that program anytime. Former NASA space station operations team member 1995 - 2004. Good day sir.

But at this point how many second, third, forth, fifth, etc chances is Boeing going to be getting after billions more than any of the other coontractors have gotten with dismal results? They whine about how fixed price contracts that they're getting now are hurting them, but stuff like this and SLS prove that giving them price plus contracts is a horrible idea. Hell, I'm still scratching my head over the reasoning of this current mission being manned in the first place considering the first launch was a disaster and the next two tries ( YEARS apart and late ) were also giant messes. It is NOT up to the astronauts - and never has been. They are paid by NASA - and NASA is their boss. They are also blocking one of two docking ports - and holding up missions that other astronauts, countries, ansd companies have trained for YEARS to perform. This is a complete waste of ISS time, as its life diminishes. The ISS can only hold so many people - and this delay is INEXCUSABLE. Those missions that have been skipped over while NASA dithers, and Boeing sits on its fat corporate ego, will not be carried out, because the procession of missions must proceed. You can't expect astronauts and other paying companies to wait, while NASA vacillates and delays current missions because of this disaster.
