Congratulations, Doctor Guignion (hope I'm not jumping the gun, there)! I was an Angelino for 7 years (West LA, not close to Occidental) and I can offer the following advice: 1. Walking can be faster than driving, depending on how far you're going. Finding a parking place can be a struggle in its own right if wherever you're going doesn't have dedicated parking of its own. This also leads to the following advice: 2. An apartment with dedicated parking will save you money. Los Angeles county is full of cities that make obscene quantities of money off of closing roadside parking once a week in different locations and ticketing anyone who parks there. This seems like it'll never matter until you forget it's Wednesday and decide to walk to work or end up staying very late at work to finish something and sleep in a bit or you get sick (there is little worse than walking two blocks to your car with a 100 degree fever, just to try and find a new place to put your car for the day). 3. Use sunscreen. You're going to get a lot of UV radiation. Protect your skin and your health. Don't be me. When I get skin cancer in a decade or two, I'm going to regret a lot of dumb choices. 4. Everything left exposed to the air is going to get covered in a fine misting of particulates over time. This includes windowsills. This can stain windowsills. Landlords love to charge you for that (even when they were going to repaint the entire unit anyway). Clean your windowsills. 5. There's great hiking up in those "mountains", and odds are better than not you'll get dragged to some event in the Malibu "mountains" at some point even if you don't hike. If you do, bring too much water so that you don't bring too little. It is hot up there, the air is very dry, and it is very easy to get dehydrated. 6. Where you can use it, the LA Metro is actually really good (although Angelinos do not believe in mass transit etiquette in any way, something that shocked me after living in London). Mass transit in LA is both better than people give it credit for and entirely insufficient compared to what it should be. 7. If you can commute during off hours, you'll save a lot of time. In general, LA traffic is very predictable. Rush hour is bad, the rest of the time is pretty easy. Shifting your schedule even by an hour against rush hour can save you a lot of time in your car. 8. Start looking for housing yesterday. The LA rental market is hell.

Congratulations! The late Mike Davis's City of Quartz is a fantastic history of the city of Los Angeles. It's not strictly L.A., but I also enjoyed Henry Miller's Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch for some reflections on life on the California coast, as well as the poetry of Robinson Jeffers. For me, the best part of LA is often the architecture on offer, with places like the Schindler House, the works of Gregory Ain in Mar Vista, or you can even put on your PoMo Jameson hat as you ride the elevator in the Bonaventure.

I defended my phd two weeks ago and your anti-oedipus saved me, just gave me the entre and confidence to do Deleuze, will always be grateful ... a (tiny) topic suggestion, I wonder if it held interest for you: Henri Maldiney (Regard, Parole, Espace). I cant find English trans, Deleuze dips into his manifestation of forms/systole-diastole, but Maldiney does lots on sensation, is such an interesting thinker I have no idea why he isnt more studied. Anyhow, just the best of luck with it all!
