G'day and welcome to another episode!!
This one is for the real keen skinny water aussie bass anglers!! Those who, like me, can't wait for the winter go be over to continue chasing these magnificent australian natives.
People frequently ask if, during winter, there are any decent bass left up in the freshwater parts of the creeks and rivers...well, the numbers are certainly reduced when compared to outside of spawning season, however some bass do not spawn every season and they decite to remain up in the fresh.
For those who don't know, australian bass need saltwater to spawn, this is why the majority of the population of mature bass in each system travel down the salt at the end of autumn (using the last rains of the season to make their way down) and remain there during the entire winter (closed season) for them to come back up to the fresh using the first rains of spring.
There is always a debate about the ethical side of chasing bass during closed season...I will explain the rules and then I will get into the ethical side of thisngs:
The rules in NSW are that bass aren't to be targeted BELOW ANY DAM OR WEIR during the closed season that extends from May 1 until August 31. Therefore in NSW there can be significant parts of freshwater sections of rivers and creeks where bass aren't to be argeted during closed season.
The rules in QLD are thsat bass aren't to be targeted IN TIDAL WATERS (this is in any part of the creeks or rivers with tidal influence or directly connected to it) between June 1 and August 31. This, together with the fact that in QLD there is mnimal to no rain during that period of time, leaves the bass that cam down to the salt 'stuck' in there until the first rains of the spring.
For this reason, since I am in QLD, when I chase aussie bass in winter, I make sure I am upstream enough from the salt (with several sets of nearly dry rapids, causeways, etc) to ensure that I can't affect any bass that decided to spawn during the current season.
I hope everyone gets to enjoy this episode!!
