Grey bats (Myotis grisescens) once flourished in caves all over the southeastern United States, but due to human disturbance, populations declined severely during the early and mid portion of the 20th century. Thanks to conservation efforts at certain caves, this beneficial creature has recovered and was recently under consideration to be removed from the endangered species list. In this one protected cave, tens of thousands of grey bats leave every summer night to forage over nearby lakes, consuming tons of insect prey.
