Big Ben chimes for 9.00am, Monday 14th November 2022.

I happened to be passing by at 9am today, so I thought I'd grab a quick video of the hourly chime sequence.
Having heard these a lot over 23 years working in London, I would say with fairly high certainty that all the chimes are significantly quieter than they ever used to be. Which is a shame, as they really don't cut through the hustle bustle of Westminster as they once did ...

According to the rennovations I do believe they replaced all the hammer heads and yes years ago the strike and chimes were shorter so we were used to the 10 second pause now they have to match it for the new year. I do wonder how on earth they will fix so everyone can do a 10 second countdown in 2023. It certainly is nice to be hearing the chimes automatically once again.

I believe Big Ben was the only hammer that they did not replace because they did not want to alter the sound in any way as per one of the renovation videos I remember seeing. All others were completely reworked. It sounds fantastic!

The chime hammers used to sound different before the renovations(the bells sounded much sharper), and I like how they sound now. The fog gives it an eerie view

Interesting, I think the quarter chimes have been slowed a little and each bell is more evenly spaced. Also the time from the end of the chimes and big Ben chiming is shorter

I've been watching the repairs online and can explain this. After so many years, the hammer heads flattened, giving a harsh sound when they struck the bells. We were used to hearing this. They either re-shaped or replaced them. They're now slightly rounded giving the bells a softer sound. I think they were smart in reducing the time between the chime and strike. I'd bet it was this way when the clock was new. Those guys did a wonderful job keeping a famous piece of history in tip top condition.

@@Rosenbar731 This was how the clock was when it was indeed new. The chime and strike train was shorter and it was going to be an important clock that would be needed. Many people now rely on watches and smartphones but sometimes a clock is all you need. Also I love the sound it produces and Big Ben always makes people happy.

I’m pretty sure that’s from video perspective, the audio is never what you hear in real life, I’ve seen in videos were people use microphones when the city is as big as ever and you can still here the chimes good.

The previous sound was due to the wear of the hammers, this one is more "correct".
