"Big Bertha" is the world's widest TBM but not the largest in terms of length. The longest TBM is used in the Gotthard Base Tunnel Project in Switzerland. It has a length of 410 meters.

The reason we needed this tunnel is to replace the Alaskan way viaduct which was damaged by an earthquake in 2001 if there were to be an earthquake right now it would collapse. After the tunnel is built they will demolish the viaduct they will rebuild the waterfront to make it look less industrial.

the important value is the diameter of the tunnel and not how much the TBM weighs. The largest is the Herrenknecht Mixschild 17.60 mt. diameter. It does not matter how long it is, but how wide it is.
