Exactly! Big bikes take bigger momentum. Taking the technicals at half speed is much harder to ride than good momentum, and smooth clutch/throttle hands.

Yeah, as i was editing the video i was definitely noticing how much i was lugging it. I'm gonna work on doing more clutch work in the future. Thankfully the bike has mountains of torque, but i don't wanna get in the habit of using it as a crutch.

White Rim is no joke especially on a big bike! I rode a good part of it in 2023 on my Africa Twin and really enjoyed it. The ride is challenging and the scenery is unbelievable. Unfortunately I couldn't complete the whole loop because of flooding along the Green River. The campsites at Hardscrabble Bottom were reported to be under about 3 ft. of water. I'd love to ride it again but next time I think I'll take my DRZ!

That must have been the flooding i heard about. They had to redo/repair a bunch of the road down there. I think that's why the sand was extra bad.

Yeah, the big adventure bikes are much more at home on highway or fireroads. This bike primarily is used for riding 2 up with luggage with my wife on road trips. It was fun in a masochistic sort of way to get it out and really push it and myself to our limits.

That's not an adventure bike. That's a sport touring bike dressed to look like an adventure bike. A T700 or Aprilia Tuareg 660 is 90% as good on the road and 90% better off-road. I was on the WR in Oct and the sand/silt was much worse. And btw....a lightweight dual sport would feel boring on the WR, but of course the landscape is amazing either way.

Props to you for doing a real adventure :) Also huge props for taking a super tenere through that - being one of the more road biased ADV's, and being known for being topheavy, all of what you did there was impressive. I did notice your tire choice - a solid knobby style front will help out quite a bit through terrain like that as well. Personal favorite for that type of riding was the Bridgestone battleax AX41's. Awesome video though.

As the old saying goes, " I don't believe I would have told (or shown) that story!" You are very lucky to get our of there without serious injury. When you stated that, "you can't ride this stuff without eventually going down", I couldn't believe it. I rode the entire WRT with 6 other old guys a while back when the trails were not a good as what you were on. We were all in our late 60's or 70's and, besides one flat tire, we had no drops. Of course we had a lot of offroad experience and the largest bike we had was a 690 cc weighing about 330 lbs. While your ride makes for a good video, please don't keep riding trails like this without a lot more training, experience and the right bikes. Glad you are both OK.

I have Super Tenere 2015. Didn't read any comments before writing my own in order to exclude bias. Sand Riding I tried to ride in sand and I can say for sure that you should go faster in sand to get more stability. Or very slow to be able to step on the ground if needed. The most important thing here is speed and not trying to handle too much with your handlebar. More with feet by moving your mass from one peg to another. I hate sand. Sometimes it's need to ride through the sand in full load (bike + me + 40-50 kg of load) and it's a separate kind of adventure 🙂 Revs I also noticed that your revs were too low in some cases. Sometimes I feel that you almost stall the bike. And I guess you either need to speed up a bit or lower the gear. Of course, it's hard to say to which angle you're going up the hill because of the camera. Angles are quite steep, I guess. Cases About the cases (panniers). I bought Givi frame with Givi tracker panniers. And I've dropped the bike several times quite hard on the unpaved roads like yours and nothing bended, not the frame, not panniers, nothing. It seems It's so thick that it's hard to bend. Engine protection It's good that you've tested the engine protection. Now we see what can happen (15:14) 🙂 Thanks for the video, it was nice to see the bike on the unpaved roads. Nature is beautiful indeed.

Dork has never ridden the Super Tenere and doesn't have the skills or fitness to properly advise on what bike is good for who. Dork also says the 800DE makes no sense, yet the 800DE in this video had zero problems. Dork is entertainment at best, not a proper review channel. Considering this rider is a beginner, he did well on a big bike.

I agree 1st gear is way too high for the White Rim Trail. You can be skilled enough to ride the Super T on this trail but trying to keep your speed down for conditions is tough. The Power on ST doesn't pick up till your doing at least 22 to 32mph so when you want to slow down it lugs. Also the weight of Super Tenere of the front end exceeds the performance of the Front end. I have ridden a Super Tenere for 12 years and wouldn't find that bike matches that trail as fun, just work. I road that WRT last April and had a blast on a smaller bike.

Great video and thank you for posting. This video reminds me of this past October on my KLR650 down in Tennessee. I decided to ride in search of a dirt road “just for fun” haha. Well, it quickly turned to mud and became a real slug fest. Went down at least a dozen times, broke a mirror, broke both side plastic cases off a few times (glad they “broke away” and could be resecured), got covered head to toe in thick mud. I was alone and if it weren’t for the help of some very friendly people on side by sides, I probably would have had to walk out. My back was sore big time (KLR is 487lbs 😢) but lesson learned. Good tires are key and common sense is even more helpful. I didn’t have to deal with darkness like you did but I did cringe when you said “I just want to get out of here.” Yep, same words spoken by myself. I rode home to my buddies house to a good meal and a nice hot tub. I am glad you had someone with you, you could have been stuck multiple times and I can’t imagine what riding that trail was like in the dark. I want to do this trail at some point myself. Only maybe on a mountain bicycle or maybe my old Toyota Land Cruiser. Thank you for posting your experience and ride safe. Glad it worked out, I know that feeling.

Very cool Trip! Would love to ride there some day. BUT... I was riding a big part of the TET Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Norway last year on my 1100GS and not once did i think "thats the perfect bike for this". Heavy adventure bikes are fantastic for really long trips but when the going gets tough you want something light and nimble. I bought a used CRF250 the moment i arrived back home. I can tell you man... these 220lbs difference to the GS makes it feel worlds apart.

I'd love to ride the TET one day. Sounds like a fun ride. Yeah.... I've got a wr450 that would have eaten up this trail, but the 500 miles of highway and that many hours on it's crappy seat would have sucked. My current problem is I've got 2 bikes that are both at either extreme of suitability lol

@jubjubs The TET is definitely a fantastic trail. I'm from Germany and often go to Poland to ride various bits of it. I also have two bikes at different ends of the spectrum but meanwhile I tend to take the lighter CRF and suffer a bit on the road to have more fun off-road. There is no perfect solution for this problem... something like a T7 or Tuareg 660 is still a compromise off-road.

You either pull the fuse, or put the bike up on the stand and run it for a few seconds in second gear, but the ABS will turn back on if you cycle the ignition with the key. you should turn your traction control off when going through sand. you need as much momentum to push the bike through it even if the wheel slips. Wheel slipping through sand going straight is better than wheel stopping completely as even during the wheel slipping though the sand, the bike still has some power to push. also use a higher gear as it less torque. too much torque, your tires dig themselves in.

Most of the trail wasn't bad. Half of it is basically a Subaru road. It gets more technical at the end.

Overly tall overly heavy adv bikes aren't good for anything but the road. You dont need power or weight or even clearance more than 8 inchs as long as the bash plate is adequate which oem ones rarely are.You need a light bike with minimal electronics that you can still flatfoot and is light enough to easily pick up. P. S. Keep compensating for your lugging and you're going to burn out your clutch.

Poor people in 3rd. World countries regularly travel roads as bad as this on small displacement Honda cg 125's and their knockoffs.Little clearance 2 or maybe 3 up with a load of luggage. When they dont have clearance they walk it through. I was watching them pass 2 up right by Itchy boots on a 300c.c. Honda in the African mud and sand.

Scratch that re sprocket; saw your shaft. The lugging you are doing maybe the best that bike can do; if so, you need a different bike.

I thought about taking my wr450f, but i didn't have the heart to subject it to that many highway miles, or the butt calluses to handle riding a vinyl covered 2x4 of a seat for that many hours lol.

trying to go off road with a big cc bike loaded up with more weight is just giving you problems that just are not needed i never understand. a simple loaded up 250 would have done better than this even with luggage

You certainly didn't do yourself any favors in the intelligent department with this video. Lol there are plenty of videos out there that you could of watched before choosing to do something so silly. I am 51 and can dead lift 300 pounds but i I would never take my V-strom 1000 out there.

I’m 49 and deadlift 500 lbs. I’m doing it with my Harley Pan America. But lifting any bike is easier or harder, depending on what kind of angle and sludge you’re working with. If you can’t pick up your bike on the trail, figure it out, no matter how heavy it is. It’s harder with the V-Strom, but maybe if he keeps doing hard things, he’ll be deadlifting more than his body weight at your age.

Horrible lugging; consider a front sprocket with one fewer teeth.
