I bought some James Joyce in May as well! Not Ulysses (im too scared 😂) but A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and The Dubliners. I'm so curious about Step By Step Irish.

Those are better to start with than Ulysses! 💜

It’s so cool you work with the opera. Do you have any favorites? I went to the Met to see Le Nozze and Don Giovanni, a dream come true, 2 of my happiest memories.

Moby Dick is probably my all time favourite. I’ve done several new operas like Everest and Filumena that are pretty cool. I like the music to Carmen but that and Butterfly kept trying to kill me whenever I stage managed them! Everything that could go wrong did! Mozart is pretty reliably fun though I don’t feel the need to do the Magic Flute again. It’s much less stressful just operating the surtitles. Oh and Dutchman was a lot of fun too.

All signs are pointing me to Moby Dick lately! 😂 honestly, I have to familiarize myself with the opera, that’s so interesting!! (I’ve been excited to read the book for a few years now and keep waiting for the perfect time, I think todays the day). Yeah … there’s some stupid librettos out there 😂 Love Butterfly, and Magic Flute and Dutchman are favorites too, saw productions of those here in Boston. It’s difficult choosing favorites, I also love the operas of Rossini, Donizetti, Monteverdi … my favorite from the ‘contemporary’ category would be the Philip Glass triptych: Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha and Akhenaten, (Akhenaten being my first choice because I listen to it constantly!)

@@SecondThoughtsAboutTheMission I should listen to some Philip Glass opera. I’ve only listened to his piano music and love it. I remember glancing at the surtitles during Lucia Di Lammermoor (also very good and based on the Walter Scott novel), and thinking “oh this is why it’s in Italian!” Some of the lyrics were so ridiculous in English! Oh and that reminds me, I also love the opera Manon by Massenet but I haven’t listened to it in a long time. And yes, the book Moby Dick is so beautiful! It is a bit meandering sometimes (I think he spends quite some time describing knots and types of whales and things like that), but it’s so beautiful I’ve read it twice.

Uh yeah.. started reading Moby Dick a couple of days ago, and I’m already thrilled: it’s everything I was looking for
