However I don't believe times were ever as good as the eighties. I was born 1974. Bikes were the best then and still are now. God bless

I restored one of these myself last year. After I had the mandatory head mod performed by Eric Gorr to solve the squish band issues it has been a bulletproof machine. Very fun bike to ride with lots of roll on torque, almost like a 4 stroke. The IT version of the 490 also has a smaller carb, and different porting compared to its YZ brother, making it much easier to ride in the woods.

I had the 400. The guy I bought from had the 490. Damn things will put you on your back if you are not careful when doing wheelies. lol I know a lot of people love this bike, but I was never happy with the weight for trail running. It was a beast tho. I impressed a lot of seasoned riders on poker runs with the performance of it. Just wore me out too much. 250's are better suited for technical trail weaving, stump jumping, whoop dee doo's etc. As a track bike/open terrain like your sand pits, it was a blast.
