hearing that whistle blow again brings a tear to my eyes and a chill down my back, especially when it's coupled with the creaking of the rails going "HOLY SHIT WHAT IS THIS THING!?" God i love Steam Engines' shear size and power. And the BigBoy is by far my favorite monstrous creation of American imagination and ingenuity. I hope they keep real good care of 'em and restore the other 7 in due time (if they aren't too far gone by the time they reach them...

I think you are not alone of your love of Steam Engines. Your hope that other Big Boy engines may by fully restored is (In my opinion) a bigger dream than No. 4014 who is on the way to becoming Union Pacific's best hope to ride the rails under its own power. The reason I say this is that U.P. has had a second Big Boy under their roof for some time, but that it did not have the condition necessary for restoration. In fact, of all the 8 Big Boy's that remain did not have the condition of 4014 which was on display in California where the weather along with the “Southern California Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society” took great effort to keep 4014 in shape and lubed during its 50 plus years it sat in the Pomona Fairgrounds. I can only imagine the cost to restore such a engine... thanks to U.P. it was forecasted to be done sometime around 2019. We are all waiting!

Thank you for this wonderful clip,I am from u.k but have always had a great love for the locomotive, the first time i saw a loco , i would have been around 5 years old when my father took us to blackpool ,in lancashire for a day out,I remember the beast hissing into the station ,I dropped my fathers hand and ran to the wall of the platform, but i remember for ever the smell the heat the hot oily smell the smell of burning coal, I Fell in love,To the uninitiated the smell of a loco .is like the smell ,the first time you go into i a blacksmiths smithy and smell the aroma of hoof being burned while he is fitting a shoe ,nauseating ,but a smell you will never forget, i ,thave been in engineering all my life ,at sea,and have been on steam diesel turbs e .t.c, but never on locos i know the idea of space but the sound of that loco horn ,on the movies ,is one of the loneliest sounds in Gods creation, hoping to be heard, and telling someone you are near I saw the Rocket run in U>k ,it was built for the cotton trade between the U.S.A.to move cotton from l/pool to manchester, but that is relating to a sad part of history, now past ,But thank Union Pacific for keeping these dinosaurs alive ,and kids in future will wonder ,and ask why things had to be so big,and if you visit U.K we have a few museums for locos, good by andGod bless J C W

I had to take another view of 4014 on the move. A real piece of American Railroad History captured on video. Thanks, Ken. I saw a question about the whistle sound. From what I heard over group discussions with Ed Dickens of Union Pacific, the whistle sound was actually from 4014. Although it was obviously not powered up, I believe the whistle was powered by a steam generator placed somewhere on 4014 or its tender. The steam generator output was only sufficient to activate the whistle. As a result, the whistle volume was nowhere near what it is capable of performing - like hearing it miles away. However, I surmise it was powered enough for the intent of officially notifying the visitors that morning at the Pomona Fairgrounds and the rest of the railroad industry that 4014 finished its journey on hopscotch sectional tracks across the Fairgrounds parking lot, ending 50 years of idle captivity and was now rolling on rails of the national network.

No, there is no plume. Steam through a cold whistle body would make an obvious fog when it sounds, there is no visible emissions. The whistle was connected to compressed air, probably taken from the brake air compressor on #1996 and stored in bottles strapped inside the tender or cab in order to build up enough volume for the whistle to actually sound.

From all the red hoses wrapped around 4014, I think they actually did have her brakes connected. However, unproven brakes that haven't been used in years, so it's a good idea to provide the empty covered hoppers as additional stopping power. Just in case anything had gone wrong.

What would be awesome? Perhaps if they could next year, on the anniversary of his departure for restoration, he comes back to this exact same spot.

There are more idle guys in this scene than all 50 states' DOT crews put together! Great video! I wonder what it cost to do all the rail mods and such?

I was there when we move All the Trains to where they are now from where they used to be in the eighties, I handled the brakes on her while she was being slipped tracked and many other of the trains in the collection. I washed All of the Big trains and polished the bells. after they were moved to there new home. I have not been back since but will return to tell the complete story. Past ats&f member. JI am so moved she will LIVE STEAM AGAIN.
