Union Pacific, Big Boy, #4014 finally gets to work after several months of break in runs and preparations. During the break in runs the steam locomotive was only working minimally. The massive and powerful locomotive hardly breaks a sweat pulling this small passenger train. Hard to believe this is powered by fire and water.
It's a far cry from the mile long freight trains this monster could pull on a daily basis. The crew said the locomotive is running extremely well and will further add more tonnage in the future. The bad weather comes in fast and furious in Wyoming. It won't be long before the bone chilling, brutal, Winter takes over this landscape. Filmed 9-27-2019.

I live in a nursing home and very limit travel. I remember seeing steam going through Salina, Ks. To hear the whistles of the steam locomotive, any size is music to my ears. I would love to see the Big Boy in person but it's only dreaming. Ride in the cab and help drive her down the tracks. The old steam locomotives got about 100 miles before running out fuel and water.

It runs out of water 4 times over on just its own tender before it runs out of fuel, with the Canteen tenders Joe Jordan and Jim Adams it can go further without being refilled. But it still has to stop every hundred miles or so for lubrication and inspection.

Excellent video. As an audio engineer it's refreshing to hear a clip without unnecessary voices or clanging of crossing guards.

Interesting comment on the RR crossing sounds, .. I find that as times I find those ambient details can be a good thing. I've made audio recordings for many years. Throughout this time, I've enjoyed capturing steam locomotives the most, there's simply nothing like them ... and it's not even close! I'm officially retired (but never really stop dabbling in all things audio). As a hobbyist, I've been recording steam locomotives since the 70's. In the last 10yrs or so I began experimenting in multi-channel surround recordings, but I've yet to capture steam in multi channel. Anyway, I understand and agree with your point about a clean recording, ie., no talking etc. I can't begin to tell you how many recordings of mine have been ruined by someone walking up and talking to me/asking questions etc. However, it's a pleasure achieving a nice balance and variety of environmental elements (just no tweakers!) to accompany the raw power of a locomotive passing by. When in the field you take what you get. Chasing a steam locomotive you find there's little time to get everything perfect. Myself, I would consider an ideal scenario trackside would consist of a fade in to low levels of crickets and other insects. There's also birds clearly heard at low levels too. I'm positioned within 25' of the tracks with a road crossing (with clanging!) about 50-to-100 yards in front of me. Ideally, the whistle needs to be done before the locomotive is too close. Each locomotive and engineer is different in how they employ the whistle and the whistle's HF energy can be staggeringly high. In all US railroading, the engineer must utilize the same horn/whistle pattern at each grade crossing; LONG, LONG, SHORT, LONG. The last LONG must be held until the locomotive is across the crossing. So as I mentioned, I prefer being 50-100yds after the crossing. This enables a recorded balance of the beautiful steam whistle HF, while still capturing the massive LF weight and power of the locomotive. If you're too close, the input gains have to be lowered to accommodate the über high SPL of the whistle. Thus, the overall LF gravitas isn't conveyed. Also, the low level ambient information and dimensional/depth cues such as distinct whistle echo details would be diminished. And THAT'S no bueno, because that's the good stuff! - Fade in, crickets birds etc. Even the occasional vehicle crossing the tracks. Way off in the distance the whistle faintly echoes... slowly increasing in level as the train gets closer. The RR crossing clanging begins, it's not unpleasant due to the gains set for +120dB ... the intensity grows, peaks, then beautifully the process reverses as the train speeds away ... leaving only the same crickets and echoing whistle in the distance. Nicely soothing ambience - excitement ramps up - peak experience - excitement wanes morphing into soothing nature ambience. I don't believe I've ever typed this process out... it's as if it's a metaphor for sex! Oh shit that's funny!

@@FOH3663 I guess my point is.... sometimes it's nice to hear a clean train by and nothing else. In my line of work all those other back ground sounds (birds, wind, vehicles, horns etc) are added in later to create the balance we want.

Absolutely beautiful shots in this video. Some of the best I’ve seen of Big Boy. I can’t help but think whenever I watch this how proud Ed and his team must be while running this locomotive all around the country. All the blood sweat and tears they put into bringing 4014 home from California and the massive, thorough restoration they did....to get in the cab of this magnificent machine and ride it from the west coast to the heart of the Midwest, from California to Texas to Wyoming and all points In between, and have so many people come out to see it, it has to be the ultimate feeling of accomplishment!

After spending much of November and December 2018 in Medicine Bow and shooting images there in the snow, I've been rather fond of the town. You played your location-planning very well and caught this beautiful articulated very nicely, indeed. Thanks, too, for not adding a cheesy soundtrack.

@@NOVARailandWeatherEnthusiast Stop treating that shit as factual. I already said in a past video, that it depends on the speaker. The gender shit doesn't make sense anyway, as it's a machine. It has no gender. "It" is actually the most appropriate because locomotives are genderless, industrial machines. Plus, not every single country, nor every single person in the world, calls these machines a "she." Also, don't you have anything better to do than to go and "correct" literally every single fucking comment you see about the Big Boy? So far, I've seen you in almost every new video on the 4014, and I don't mean it as a good thing.

It's been a great summer. Thank you Tom for chasing the big boy around for all of us tethered to work and home life. The black tender I guess is fuel. The 2 yellow tenders are water. How far can they go without refilling the water tenders or water gallons per mile. I expect there are crew sleeping cars. A kitchen car stocked up for great meals of all types from brown bags to full on sit down service for crew and the passengers who ever those would be. Did they manage to install in the cars closed circuit video from the cab? Did the install WiFi and Bluetooth so when they go by you can screen shot your phone showing 4014 connections not like somebody would be looking at their phone settings as big boy steams past. Weather coming in hard thru Idaho and Montana in a few days. Be safe out on the roads tom. Thanks again. I visited 4014 many times at the fairgrounds. Only had fleeting thoughts of restoration. The skills and the tools needed to do it. Let's hope Ed puts up additional videos this winter of the details on 4014. The glimpses into the how it's done were too fleeting.

Thank you. I nearly didn't even go to Wyoming as the scenery is poor and the wind blows constantly. But there is some nice spots here and there. I don't know the range of the water tenders. I believe it is around 200 miles per tender. Yes there is a sleeping car that they carry with them. I filmed a video of that car years ago and maybe I will post a video on that. They do not have a kitchen car but they do have a section in on of the cars with a refrigerator, stove, microwave, tables, etc where you can bring you own meals or cook one there. There is also some small private rooms for the engineer and others. Yes they did install WiFi and Bluetooth technology and you can trace the locomotive by Twitter. No word yet if there is any cameras on board.

Yeah Diesel power change back to Steam Power 4014 will be needed to pull long freight trains and passenger trains. But that would mean any steam locomotive in the museums would need to be repaired and modified for modern rail useage.

It was out on the Union Pacific's Central Transcon on the Laramie Subdivision. The Laramie Sub starts in Cheyenne off three subs, the Sidney, the Front Range, and the Greeley. and ends in Rawlins Wyoming and picks up the Rawlins Sub.

Brilliant footage, this must be amongst the best wonderful panned shots! I must have rewound that opening shot shot six times! A couple of questions please US experts, what weight does she have on the drawbar & what function does the diesel perform?

Thank you. Tractive effort is 135,375 lbs. Rated at 6,290 horsepower. The diesel locomotive is there as a back up locomotive.

Just imagine the environmentalists in California (yes, I know that not all Californians are like that) when they see this 1,250,000 pound giant of the rails thundering across the SoCal deserts billowing out columns of black smoke.

Martin Turner It was a joke. There are sane environmentalists. I’m talking about the stereotypical crazy people that they’re often portrayed as in media.

I was skeptical that it was pulling at all when 844 was behind it. I wanna see it WORK like when 3985 had to shove a stalled freight.

Do they put a diesel behind the steam locomotive for extra power or as a backup?
@Ravenscaller
@Ravenscaller 5 жыл бұрын
Backup. I believe it's a federal requirement for all steam on mainline railroads. Not to mention likely insurance requirements.

The diesel powers the brakes and has the ATC anti collision system so big boy dosent run head on into another train because it dosent have computers onboard

Among other things. Steam engines dont have dynamic brakes which i believe are a requirement for most railroads.

Nice work Tom! Good to hear the ol' girl working a little ! You certainly want to look after a loco when you spend so much rebuilding it , and while it is amazing to see a 4000 back on the rails , it would be nice to see it pull a heavy train once in a while! . You picked some good locations and people free...whcih adds to the shots. Cheers Gregg.
