Union Pacific steam locomotive number 4014 is considered to be one of the largest locomotives ever built. It was one of 25 “Big Boy” locomotives but for the Union Pacific Railroad between 1941 and 1944 by the American Locomotive Company. In 2013, the Union Pacific made a deal with the Rail Giants Train Museum in Pomona, California to reacquire locomotive 4014 and restore it to operation as part of a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 2019. Come along as wee see the first test run of locomotive 4014 as well as its first excursion to Ogden, Utah and return. All aboard!

In 1959, on a trip out west, I convinced my family (12 yr old sister) and my cousin’s family (10 and 12 yr old sisters) to stop at the UP Cheyenne yard to see the majority of the Big Boys and Challengers gathered prior to scraping. My dad, who had worked for Southern Coal Co., and I were big RR nuts. The girls complained all the way from Tennessee that it would be “boring”, but… to this day they still talk about the experience. The yard manager allowed us to wander among the giants for hours, climbing in the cabs, advancing the throttle, puling the brakes and horns. I don’t recall the count but believe there were 10 or so Big Boys and a few Challengers. At the time I could have bought a bell from one of them for $75. I had the money from cutting yards but couldn’t part with it. Biggest mistake of my life! Now I’ve got to see one running.

790$ in today money I cannot blame you for not spending what seemed like a waste of a very decent chunk of change in a time where such things were more commonplace. (Steam locos) hard to guess what things are like 1 year let alone dozens.

Back on the 70's we had a great uncle who lived with us until his passing..He was born in 1901, he had this HUGE dip in the top of his head, said he got it when he was 4 because he fell asleep along the tracks and the caboose step clipped him..His family was surprised he survived..BUT he would put his hands to his mouth and blow in such a way saying that's what a steam train sounded like..We thought it was cool back then. YEARS later one rolled through the town I lived in..When that whistle went all it did was bring back memories..He had hit it PERFECTLY..

Today Nov 16 2019 my dad and I witnessed this magnificent steam engine in Nowata Oklahoma. And it was an absolute joy of a time. Getting to spend the 30 minutes of my life with this thing in near arms reach (but did not touch because it was HOT!) was amazing, gratifying, and just all around worth the time to stand around and wait for it to stop in and show off it's majestic self. I loved it.

I remember when they announced that the UP Steam Shop was going to restore 4014, I was shocked that such a massive restoration of a 4-8-8-4 would be attempted. It's great that people, and Union Pacific, are willing to invest in historical preservation of these extraordinary machines. Things, like 4014, provide tangible links in the historical record of mechanical engineering and material sciences, that are important to maintain because they're part of a broader continuum. 4014 isn't just some obsolete relic, it's now a living and working example of applied science that illustrates the progression of technologies that succeeded the steam locomotive. But beyond all that, it's beautiful machine that wears its intricate mechanicals for all to see; it's representative of the pinnacle of pure mechanical engineering. Romanticism about steam locomotives didn't start with their passing, people were awed by these beasts almost from the moment they appeared. The raw physics of how the steam locomotives work, the danger and adventure that they represent, those things are real; and the bigger they are, the more they are operating at the very limits of the possible. When fired and operating, these machines are living, breathing beasts; they heave, hiss, sweat and shudder, and if toyed with, they can kill. These machines are more than just the sum of their parts, the function of their design, or the history they represent; they're worth preserving because they are absolutely magnificent.

I got to see this monster in Ogden, first when it was celebrating on the day before it left then the next morning I went to Riverdale where I watched it leave. It was going about 30-40 mph and was the coolest thing I've gotten to see in a while. Both engines 4014 and 844 both shook the ground as they passed, then whistled after they passed us. Wish to see it again if it comes during it's summer trip

Thanks you for this video. I'm an Italian railfan and I was there in May 2019. It was an amazing week for me (from 7 to 12) but surelly I cannot forgive 6 days with the Big Boy and american trains. Ciao.

Absolutely superb quality video documenting this spectacular event. Well done. Having binge watched everything concerning the Big Boy 4014 since 2014 and over the past few days your video ranks among the very best. And living in Australia and having driven a 1969 VW campervan in Wyoming back in 1988 I felt particularly moved to watch all KZbin videos on my 75" screen with the sound turned up. Thank you. Greetings from the Train Lord in South Australia

As a young child born in the 50s i used to live not far from train tracks and would year that haunting distant sound of the trains blowing the whistle as it passed our town. It sure sounded a lot like this one. There is just something so hart warming to me about that sound and i cant even define it but hearing it again in this video brings back that feeling and lots of memories.

It may not interest anyone, but the Diesel that accompanies all current excursions run by the Union Pacific is mandated by company policy. Union Pacific utilizes PTC (Positive Train Control) which is also required by the government on all 1st Class Railroads (at a minimum) on their rail lines and due to the different era the 4014, 844, and 3985 were built in, they will likely never be permitted to lead a train solely by themselves (as they lack PTC). The modern infrastructure of most railroads also prohibits the successful return because of the lack of necessary items such as water and oil along the lines. It would be extremely costly to bring these locomotives back into freight service which is extremely unfortunate. It would be amazing to see these magnificent locomotives return but it is extremely unlikely that this will be seen anytime in the near future.

There’s something so utterly romantic about that horn as it echoes across the valleys and grasslands of the USA. A great nation connected by a great locomotive

When I was a child around 2000, I remember watching the vids about Challenger 3985 and the 844. The guys at Union Pacific were dreaming of restoring a "Big Boy" and I always hoped they would come through. I'm so happy that they made it happen.

Thanks for putting this up. I've been keeping track of the #4014 since it left Pomona, Ca. 5 years ago. I'loved steam engines from the first time I saw one up close when I was three years old in New York City in 1957. I was born in Manhattan in May 1954. My parents left NYC by train when we moved to Cleveland. I've always have been amazed by the complexity and what it took to build a steam engine. I've also been a model railroader since I got my first train set when I was 8 years old. Right now, I have a UP Shay locomotive, an unmarked 4-6-4 steam loco, and an HO scale Rivarossi Big Boy marked UP #4001. If I can find the proper decals I will renumber it as #4014.

When I read on the internet Union Pacific got the ability to restore the beast and beauty. . . I was shocked. Me and my dad looked it up with daily reports. We were both anticipated to see it run together. Sadly he passed away but I know he was looking down in heaven in the Cajon Pass where we respectfully spread his ashes in honor of him loving trains as much as he did exactly where this engine came down 5 years later. I hope one day I'll experience this beautiful engine run by in California again knowing I missed it this year.
