I feel smart I put bigger noctua on my 3950x and ignoring liquid cooling advise. It's on par with top tier liquid cooling on stock fan speed. Impressive with still having room to boost fan speed for better performance. I also don't need to worry for the next few years about pump, gunk or aio drying out
@julian.morgan4 жыл бұрын
Yes and the combination of 3950x & even the slightest possibility of gunk or leaks is really worth avoiding. At these noise levels /performance I really don't understand why anyone would take the risk, however small, with such an expensive CPU. Especially when for a tiny fraction of the cost of the CPU you can get yourself an excellent case with great thermals/airflow plea as many additional silent fans as needed i.e. more fans at lower RPM push the same air as fewer fans at higher RPM and more noise.
@evildeedz664 жыл бұрын
@@julian.morgan You can't possibly think people would have taken those risks, if the custom liquid cooling weren't necessary, could you?! The thing you should know when it comes to Zen 2 is the clocks are adjusted according to the temperature/cooling capacity. Saying air cooling might suffice really depends on what kind of workload you want to put it through...there are truck loads of benchmarks where you can see up to 200Mhz differences in boosting behaviour. Again, this is because, if your cooling isn't great, the CPU will just lower its frequencies to keep it under the preset limits. It might be enough if you're looking at maybe some games/applications/software, but it's more of a misconception. The cold-plate designs are old and based on monolithic chip-dies, while Zen 2's layout is a completely new architecture using multiple chips; even if the radiator is great, the problem is that when it's under load the cold-plate can't keep up with the heat output. Unfortunately, using a monolithic design would have made Zen 2 way too expensive so they had to come up with something else.

@@evildeedz66 ... People take stupid, unnecessary risks all the time. This testing shows minimal difference between the best air cooler and the best water cooler - seriously, the CPU is not thermally throttling at an 82° peak.
@julian.morgan4 жыл бұрын
@@evildeedz66 These tests compare a good air cooler with a good AIO - custom liquid cooling is a whole other ball game, not least because then you are not talking about something massed produced where you are prey to poor QC with no sure way of knowing whether or not you drew the short straw until something goes expensively wrong. With a custom loop things are very different because YOU control the quality of the construction to a much greater extent. I'm sure there are niche use cases where custom loops and Threadripper are a perfect combination, but I'm equally sure that if it were my $5000 I'd run it at stock with an air cooler and do something else creative with the time difference.
@evildeedz664 жыл бұрын
@@cgunugc There is no "high end" CLC, that's really the issue, actually. Past CLC's I've used failed at some point and I personally would run away from Asetek. As for thermal throttling, yes it is, one of the measuring points is 80 (btw I highly encourage you to check benchmarks on this, plenty of them in OCN and YT). It's not necessarily a bottleneck, you can for sure render or run it trouble-free on an air cooler, it's just that it won't clock as high for sure. Just my subjective point of view, but if you'd ask me, I wouldn't render a huge asset overnight knowing it's going to sit north of 80°. But then again there are really dozens of specific use cases. @Julian I get your point, AIO is just another overmarketed term so they're really shiny baubles for people who want lights in their pc's or have space constraints, hence forgoing massive tower coolers. On the second part, you can install plenty of fail-safe protocols, from alarms to special functions that prevent most of the potential problems. If you can afford a 5k rig, then surely you can spend on a proper interface that has built-in protections. Now if you need a 5k rig for video editing, sure, it doesn't make much sense to go into custom cooling. I would probably agree as well, if I had a 3960/70, air cooling is actually a decent choice especially since TRX40 has a much better IHS layout.

This should disappear by adding an external filter in-between or by setting the fan regulation in DC mode and letting the motherboard taking care of the filtering.

AFAIK, you can crank up Noctua's fans up to 1500 RPM. It might give another 2-4 degrees advantage. I bet it would still be much quieter than most of the competition. I would be really afraid of keeping a 4000$ CPU beside a water reservoir. It's great that one can easily avoid water cooling.

The be quiet! Dark Rock Pro TR4 would have been interesting to see in this comparison. It's a larger heatsink which may mean it has better cooling potential at higher power levels. Reviews have shown it compares well to the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3.
@mapesdhs5974 жыл бұрын
What would have been interesting is to see how each cooler behaved with the same fan fitted, running at the same speed (put a Noctua on that Cooler Master?). Likewise, testing each cooler such that they're all operating at the same noise level.

It's insane how well Noctua Air coolers perform compared to everything else (not just on this socket). You'd think manufacturers would have figured out how an air cooler should look for optimal performance by now, but it seems not.

I've always been extremely impressed with Arctics coolers for their price to performance, and in many situations I would consider them a first choice for cooling. A prime example from Arctic is for any AM4 Ryzen CPU up to the top tier Ryzen 7s, the Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo is the cheapest and quietest with exceptional cooling performance. It's usually less than a hyper 212 Evo to buy and cools better. The only reason I can't endorse this specific cooler for Ryzen 9 CPUs is simply because I don't have one to test for myself (hint hint Hardware Unboxed! Test this cooler! *Please*) The problem with the Arctic air coolers is that their main selling point is price to performance, so when faced with high end parts they always seem "good enough I guess" without actually being as impressive as they should be. With high end parts like the amazing 3990, they need to up the cost by 20% and use that to match competitors for price while using that extra cost for better and more capable cooling.

Yeah if you aren't that much into RGB, or need cheap case fans or coolers, Arctic are the way to go. The 5 pack of Arctic p12 is a deal for 27 dollars. And if you want to oc a Ryzen 5, that's the cooler to go for. And it's also great for cooling Ryzen 7s.
@DeadNoob4514 жыл бұрын
Cant speak about their heatsinks, but their fans like the F14 are a steal. Around 5 bucks and both reasonably quiet and effective. Sure, nowhere near Noctua levels, but i decked out my entire case with 14cm fans for the price of one A12 from Noctua so thats no issue.

How are the idle temps below 40c? Lots of people reporting temps of 45-50c idle with air cooler, including myself with the Noctua dual fans. I'm getting 1.3x vcore on auto which results in high idle temps.

Last I checked the Noctua’s NH D-15 is their biggest heatsink. Why not use that cpu cooler?
@Sparrowc834 жыл бұрын
It's too bad Noctua doesn't have their NH-D15 or NH-U12A with a threadripper plate to see what their best air coolers could do for performance. Always going to prefer air coolers because of the set it and forget it design. If the cooler fails, I need to replace 1 fan which is really easy.

Hi there What would you suggest for an R5 3600 with max ambient of 40degrees Air: deepcool Gammaxx 400v2 or Noctua NH-U12S or NH-C14S Liquid: Antec Neptune 240RGB or Deepcool Castle 240v2 RGB?? (Looking bang for the buck performance)

*Question for Steve* What was the total cost of the Corsair Hydro X series installed in your Threadripper 3990X? I'm asking, so that I can compare the cost against the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 w/ 2nd NF-A15 fan.

Hmmm... can't say it is a big hit to the budget when the CPU is costing 4000$. In such a scenario it doesn't really matters if the cooling solution costs even 200 bucks or more when it's capable of doing the job - at approx. 100$ the Noctua is already a bargain buy.
@smack54724 жыл бұрын
For the Wraithripper did you turn the fan around? I found that mine was installed backwards that lead so poor temps on my 1920x after flipping it around I'm much better. Still hoping someone makes a good AIO for Threadripper had the Enermax but it clogged like all the others so went to air cooling.

CoolerMaster needs to fix the fan issues as well as use a better heat plate on the bottom. It's something they could easily fix. A copper heatplate and a better turbine or high volume static pressure fan and it'll be perfect.

By any chance, is that high pitched sound similar to maybe jet engine or turbo spooling up? I get s sound like that when I run my nh-u14s in a push/pull config. With a single fan I don't get that.
