Thanks for the clarification on the conversion process. I was looking to do this upgrade and knew that I needed 302mm caliper mounting brackets and was not sure if that meant I needed larger calipers as well. Makes so much more sense now that we are just allowing for 302mm rotors to now be "pinched" instead. Great work!

That's such a nice and easy mod! I'm going to do it on my 850. Just got myself a set of 17'' titans, will clear the caliper. Now I just have to find the caliper mounting brackets. After the upgrade I will have to down-size the brakes before every winter, because in my country it is mandatory to have winter tires on, and the set that I have are 15'' (also have a set of columbus which also will become useless).... or I will have to get some perfos wheels for the winter. Thanks!

I really wanted to do this upgrade when I did my brakes a few months ago. Sadly they wouldn't clear my Columbias and I wasn't going to sand the calipers down to make up space. Thanks for the video!

It's a good idea to suction out the old fluid out from the top of the master cylinder when changing the fluid. There was some trash and old material from worn seals in the bottom of my master cylinder. You don't want to push any of those particles through the braking system into the anti-lock braking module or into the calipers. I flush the brake system every time I change pads. My master cylinder and calipers are 19 years old and still working well.

Hi, thank you for great video, I want to upgrade my brake from 280mm to 302mm, I'll use my current calipers, I'll buy brackets and hoses and disc, but I want to learn if can I use springs from my current calipers for new bracket or not because I couldn't find springs for new brackets, so if springs are same or bigger for 302mm disc brackets?

I have done som reading about the conversion, only to find out U allready have video about it - impressive! I have heard that Columba, Persus, Solar, Pleiad, Helium wheels will not work but Comet and Meteor will. I have bought new front V70R calipers from volvo here in sweden - partnumber is: 8251319. By the way, what´s the total length of the longer breaklines?? (Going to buy stainless steel overbraid for better breaking efficiency.)

Thanks for the video Robert! I just wanted to ask how about disc brake rotor backing plates? I see you left the old ones, but bigger discs demand bigger plates, am I right? Also taken from 99- V70 Volvos which can cover 302mm discs. Thanks for reply in advance!
@RobertDIY3 жыл бұрын
the calipers are the same size as the 280's. Same pads, different leverage points due to larger brackets and rotors.
@elbukko3 жыл бұрын
Yes yes, I know. What I meant is a difference in splash panels or backing plates for the discs. Their diameter is larger than for 280?

@@RobertDIY Front calipers. My remark was referencing this moment of the video: 8:28 where you say "same pads and the same caliper" My car is S70 Volvo 2.3 T5 and I recently have bought 16" brackets, 302 disks, 16" brake hoses and volvo enthusiasts I know have warned me that it' better to user more appropriate for this case brake pads - 16" (different from my current 15" ones) I've checked this at www.catcar.info/volvo Making the following path: Region > NORTH AMERICA > S70 > 51 Wheel brake Subgroups of category: "Wheel brake" > Front wheel brake Service kits and then selected choice number 4 (pads). There is a list of pads available for S70 (I hope it is similar for 850): 30793799 1.00 Brake pad kit 15" EXC (CA), (US), (271587) 31341243 1.00 Brake pad kit 15" (CA), (US) 272343 1.00 Brake pad kit -1998, 16" 9485267 1.00 Brake pad kit 1999-, 16" 31262795 1.00 Brake pad kit 17"

I’ll help? Measure the stock rotors and note this below. 10” rotors = 25.4cm or 254mm 11” rotors = 27.9cm or 279mm 12” rotors = 30.4cm or 304mm Knowing this helped me at least know the rotors I came across when looking for bigger brakes as I searched junkyards for Volvo brackets

Im not too sure about this mod, if the caliper and shoes covered more of the disk then i could see better braking. With that bigger disk there is more material passing the shoes per rotation, i would have thought that would have generated more heat, but the center of the disk may take some of that heat away too. Its juggling with the variables lol, i hope it is actually better :-D The braded brake hoses will make it sharper :-)
@RobertDIY8 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking about attaching a temperature sensor to the caliper and monitoring the temperature through the day. Then comparing it with a vehicle that has the stock setup.
@RobertDIY8 жыл бұрын
Now I have another variable in the system, brake pads that are supposed to run cooler.
@zx8401ztv8 жыл бұрын
+Robert DIY Good point :-D, well im confused (nothing new) :D
@sonicstep7 жыл бұрын
"With that bigger disc there is more material passing the shoes per rotation" Therefore it should follow that more material will be available to conduct the heat away from the pads. Further, more disc material/surface area will improve convection to the air it passes through, thus minimising brake fade and improving braking consistency under prolonged pressure at appreciable speeds and vehicle carrying loads. Further explanation would require a study of molecular physics, concerning heat increases of material structures and their relationship with friction. There are traditional steel brake discs, carbon ceramic brake discs, various pad composite types all offering their various performance pros and cons. With reference to my RC model cars, I have used aluminium three piece (for increased pressure over single), steel single piece vented, GRP (glass reinforced plastic composite) discs.. Do this hobby you learn! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppvIlIWhjtSHbK8
