It's the rate of Return generated by your portfolio If you invest 100000 today and it becomes 150000 after one year then return is 50 percnet Now it's 150000 and if everything remains good it will become 2 lacs in less than a year because now the base amount is 150000 So your money would double itself in less than two year with an annual rate of 50 percnet It's about the price of stocks Sometimes everything is fine roe pat and all but price doesn't move for many years In that case you don't generate return despite good fundamentals But sometimes the market is bullish about a stock so it generates good returns for some years despite weak fundamental

so assuming the growth to be 1000x. Let us suppose a stock grows 2x in y years. so for a stock to grow 1000x(2x*2x*2x*2x*2x*2x*2x*2x*2x = 1024x approximately 1000x) that means the stock needs to double 10 times from it initial value. so it doubled 10 times in 46 years, so that is, we can assume it doubled in 4.6 years, and keeps on doubling in same time frame. so in 46years increased to 1000x. now by rule of 72-> 72/4.6=15.652%. hope its clear now.
