These comparisons should be taken with more than a grain of salt because many of these ancient animals' sizes are little more than conjecture. For some of them paleontologists don't even have a complete skull of the animal, let alone a leg or a complete spine which you'd need to reliably estimate the animal's size.
@jonathancummings64003 жыл бұрын
@@BigUriel Yes, well, there exists a gigantic American Lion skeleton, and there is plenty of Smilodon material from the LA Brea Tar Pits. They also have complete skeletons of the Cave Lion as well.
@BigUriel3 жыл бұрын
@@jonathancummings6400 I know, it's not the case for all of them, but for some it is, and it's a far more common practice in paleontology than it should be. A distinction should be made when presenting these reconstructions between the ones for which we have actually discovered all or at least most of the animal's remains, and the ones for which they have literally a few bones and are just extrapolating the animal's proportions by looking at its closest relatives. Especially when looking at fossils of more or less similar age, as two incomplete skeletons or similar animals that lived around the same time can't really be said to be two different species, they could just be two different individuals of the same one. Imagine someone finding Danny Devito's skull and Michael Jordan's femur a million years from now, they might assume these are two different species, but actually they're not, just two extreme examples of the same exact animal. If you search for the fossils of amphimachairodus for example all you'll find is a skull and an arm. It's a bit of a leap from that to try to guess how much the animal weighed.
@jonathancummings64003 жыл бұрын
@@BigUriel I agree. Especially when they name every other hominid find a new species. I hesitate to consider any post Homo Erectus hominids except for the strange Australopith like "Hobbit" as truly a different species from Homo Sapiens. It seems with each new generation of scientists who become the dominant professors, and people out in the field, they get together somehow and their interpretation of the material and their theories become the standard. It's disturbing, like the changing of clothing styles every decade or so. I therefore have my own ideas for the material. Such as, I think the American Lion was far more massive than max 750 lbs. You could barely fit 750 pounds on that skeleton. The same esteemed expert who they now follow for the weight estimate is also a backwards idiot who ignored the genetic evidence and the fact that it's skull is clearly a Lion skull, and claimed it wasn't a Lion. Somehow. A Lionlike giant pantherine evolved in the Americas magically from some unknown ancestor, since there are really only Leopardlike, Lionlike, Jaguarlike, and Tigerlike bug cats ever in the history of big cat evolution.

The king cheetah is not even a sub-species but just a coat morph. Also some of the extinct "subspecies" were actually no subspecies but just a different population elsewhere (for example the bali and javan tigers are both the same subspecies like the still living sumatran tiger). Not that it is less frustrating that most populations or species that are extinct were mostly if not all caused by humans. I'm especially interested in whatever happened about 10k years ago in the Americas as at least 3 big cat species went extinct during that area.
