Regarding mulch and irrigation, "Covering your drip irrigation system with about 2-3 inches of mulch is beneficial because the mulch will protect your water from the sun. This prevents evaporation and further conserves the water in your irrigation system." The real key to mulching is the depth of the mulch. If it is too thin, you are likely to get lots of weeds. Get that chipper, and be generous with the depth of the chip-mulch!

Very nice job on the worktop! Noticed a few times now seeing the old roof tiles stacked up. I don't remember what you were going to do with them but what you might consider is using them (broken up) for walkways and also paths between your plant beds. To break them up, add them to your cement mixer along with an old brick. After a couple of minutes add a half bucket or so of water. The broken up pieces of tile will come out with smooth edges. Nice to walk on, even with bare feet.

This is a fantastic idea that never occurred to us! We were going to use them to make garden beds they are tricky to cut. Also, as you have to burry them, when it rains it doesn’t allow for the water to flow so it gathers. So this is a great alternative project!

I like the black gold, it looks more like wood. Also, I think the mulch should go on top of the irrigation. Otherwise, the water will be absorbed by the mulch and not reach the plants.

Dark colours attract the sun and heat, so I would go for a light blind. Irrigation should be under plenty of mulch, 3 inches at least, to keep the moisture in. Great job on the worktop.

@TheIndigoEscape - So there was a reason the Bedouin nomads of the Sahara had those big black tents - now these comments tell me why - Black offers denser shade exactly because it absorbs more of the sun's rays and protects from the damaging uv rays, white lets more light (and the uv rays) through. I love it when we learn so much by reading comments!

You could put a ceiling fan in that porch area where you have the table. They're very common in the U.S. in warm states, such as Florida. They're a game changer, they allow you to sit outside comfortably.

TIP. when pouring concrete, have frames or molds ready to use up the excess concrete, the frames could be kerbstone size or paving slab size, planters, just have them ready in a corner. No waste

If they want to make pots, do papercrete. Just have the paper or cardboard soaking so that it can be made into a soft porage texture before making a slury or more of a cob. Several videos on here if you search. Hopefully that makes sense!

The rule is that a lighter color will always be cooler. Therefore, if you require respite from the heat but, dark colors like black or brown are preferable if you want to protect yourself from the sun's UV rays as much as possible. Lighter colors can be riskier. Black Gold is nice

Yeah I think a compromise may have to happen. The light colour, the white, is really light and may get all dusty in the summer. The summer heat makes the soil so dusty here 😞

I’m glad her son got them earlier, much better to train your teeth from young to be in the correct place. Tell your daughter to be patient. You do get used to them after a while. Wax is key!! They save me so many mouth sores. You do make funny faces! Constantly aware of them. Also fun when you don’t have a tooth brush and you are out of home! So best to have a toothbrush and some toothpaste in her bag. She will love her teeth after 🥰

I like the black gold but the grey might work better at reflecting the sun, whereas a dark colour will absorb the heat. Love the worktop. Make sure your soil is thoroughly watered before you add mulch on top of irrigation tubes to trap the moisture in the soil.❤

The concrete countertop came out great, good job! I love the coffee brown color the best, it will show dirt less than the black and it will blend well with your stone. Reason being, the dark colors will make the area look too dark and also light colors reflect the sun's rays away & dark colors absorb them. To get respite from the heat but also keep a fresh and bright looking area I'd choose the lighter color 😎

I follow a channel called The Eldridge family and Crandall the husband and Marcie his wife did all there kitchen work surfaces in concrete and they were terrified as well even tho he is a contractor joiner and plumber he had never done it befor and it turned out great… so be brave plus you ha a Simon he he…….oh Andrea the black gold is gorgeous and has that outdoor woody look…. i remove dead ones we call it dead heading in UK…the garden is looking fabulous…your mum is a great help Andrea …oh that concrete work surface will be amazing once you have finished…that’s it ..but of elbow grease Omar…he he…can’t wait to see it completely done with the sink in… ❤

the difference between hay and straw is hay is used as food for animals and straw is for bedding. for plants you really need to use straw. i use straw around my strawberries and grapes. it offers insulation to them in winter time too.. an cheap alternative for you is to put cardboard down instead of straw, especially with you putting the bark on top. the card will rot down into the soil eventually, but thats the same if you use straw. it will also help reduce the weeds better, the water irrigation needs to go on top of the bark so that it can soak into the bark and hold in more of the water to stop the ground from drying out. just a suggestion where you've put the outside kitchen, the space above where there is no roof if you use clear plastic roofing in that space it will not only mean the light can still shine through, but it will offer you 100% dry area and protection from the elements.

Hi! Thanks for the aerial view of the house. Do you plan to keep the workshop area once the houses are all done being built? Or will you keep it and renovate that too? What are your plans for the rest of the land? Do you know how the big house will be laid out yet??

Great question! We want to turn it, at the very end, into a self contained “granny annex” that we could rent out for short term holidays. Int he meantime, we want to make it into a more functional workshop, with concrete floor, lighting and all. Hopefully we do that soon!
