I had a beautiful chunky planner at the beginning of 2022, and at some point it really overwhelmed me. I ended up going from A5 to letter size and only keep each quarter in my planner at a time with less sections. It’s a relief for me. I think we get caught up in the aesthetics, but in reality no one is truly THAT busy (nor should be). Glad you made the change’s comfortable for you!!

Wow! I am also downsizing my planner inserts!!! I’m finding so much clutter and am finding the word “Simplify” to be my word of the year for 2023. I’ve had to go through each page more than once and really challenge myself as to whether or not I am really using it. I’m amazed at how much I’ve removed. Thanks for another great video Rana!

I love that word! I'm doing that myself all through my life. I can't pick just one word though. I am also restoring my health. And I'm investing in myself and relationships. And so much more. I guess I need a page in the front with my list of words. We can do so much more yet still simplify. Functional is another word I am focused on this year.

I love reflecting on what is working or not and making adjustments. I used a half letter for two years and now downsizing to a mini Hp and I’m going from five sections to three. Before that I was in a classic Hp and had multiple planners. I realized portability and simplicity are more important to me and I’m a planner, not a tracker, so that eliminates a lot of unused inserts for me. I also want my whole year in my planner this year so that takes priority over everything else.

I am a Happy Planner lover too except even those are just too much. I shipped their end of season sale looking mainly at dashboards, covers, etc and had soooo many in my cart that it was tediculous any only on like page 4 or 20 😊 so I just stopped and looked at them to decide quick few I wanted to buy in order to combine them. Even then I was going to half to redo so many things it was ridiculous. So I decided to just make my own. I have so much digital artwork that I absolutely love sitting on my computer and decided to make my new planner entirely scratch. The only thing I could not do was the foil so thanks to KZbin and eBay, now I can do foiling too! I do want the discbound system because I love moving things around and hate opening the jaw like rings but I do want a nice cover instead of a plastic one so I'm looking into that too. If I have to buy all the things anyway and still not happy with it, I might as well create it exactly how I want it. And then I can have different ones that stay at home, one main one for daily and weekly stuff then journals too. If I'm not 100% excited about something, back to the computer.

Rana, I love your videos; and I'm here for these changes! I'm moving from a Day Designer Daily to a GM agenda in 2023. I even had a helpful "planner consultation" on what to include. I prefer luxury minimalism. So, when I looked at everything on my shopping list, versus my intentions for 2023, I checked my emotions and cut out lots of fluff. My shift back to WAG from Daily alone will lighten my insert load in the GM Agenda. Also, the quarterly inserts were a hard pass for me, as MAG tells me all I need to know. Extra dashboards, thick dividers, multiple sticky notes, pens, habit trackers, and journaling inserts got the big chop too. I'm keeping my GM lean, clean and functional, for business and life planning. That said, I'm using the Hobonichi Weeks Mega as my holistic health and wellness journal, along with some carefully-selected accessories, for habit tracking, reflecting, creative expression, relaxation, etc. Thanks for sharing your journey, and great tips. I saved on planner supplies, just by gut-checking my shopping list against your recent videos on unnecessary items and lessons learned!

I'm switching to a hobonichi cousin and weeks from personal size rings. I'll still keep the rings, but it will serve mostly as goal/project planning and a massive inbox. The Weeks I guess will be more or less my EDC. I like having my weekly view/plans seperate from everything else. The cousin will be for daily to-dos and journaling (when I feel like it).

That is my preferred approximate size too. I love the size of the Happy Planner Classic and then adding in some skinny. But I am deciding between A5 and HP. Honestly, I don't think HP is my thing and I will be printing my own out and can stop use nice discs anyway. It's mine so I can do what I want. I definitely need a protective cover with a clasp. But I really want those shimmy black metal discs instead of ringbound. Are you getting a cover? I see some I would like in the A5 but not sure yet if I want to do that or make my own cover to get exactly what I want. It would not take too much leather or a leather-like fabric. Or HP has something simple I like too. Decisions!

I did a major switch-up for 2023. I moved from two planners for everyday planning an journaling to one Hobonichi cousin, downsized my work planner from an A5 rings to a book bound SFD weekly (about the size of a hobo weeks), and kept my finance planner separate and my personal size rings for travel (not used often, but helpful when I do). It feels like a big changed because I moved from rings in three different planning systems to bound planners.

While experimenting with my needs and functionality, I made up some printables in Canva and on my DAILY I have a single header at the top with MORNING ROUTINE and EVENING ROUTINE with a check box beside each of those. I have a separate page with my routine for each of those. And it looks more like a tracker on each item with check boxes for each day of the week. And if it is something I don't plan to do on a certain day, like a weekend or whatever then my checkbox gets marked like a free space on a bingo card since that task can be overlooked that day. Once I got it written out then I typed those tasks bit left room for more routine tasks I needed to add . This way I don't have to rewrite it out weekly since I am still tracking it. Once I get my system the way I like it and the tasks pretty well fixed then I will resize it and print it for whatever size I decide to go with. I'm glad I am doing it this way too because in just one week there are a lot of changes I decided to make already. Oh and instead of time blocking, I am not even using times unless it's scheduled and then I add the time so I can see at a glance what time it is. I am also already wanting to put most daily non-routine tasks onto a weekly list because that's how it ended up working out anyway. I don't need to feel bad about myself if I don't get 25 things on top of my normal routine some on a Monday. But spreading them all out over the week makes me not see what's ahead that I can slip in and take care of early or replace with something else due to time or just plain want to swap them. I'm getting there, but it is looking like I won't be in my new planer until April. Hopefully it will help my productivity though and less overwhelm.

I have always tended toward the Keep It Simple ideal. Which to me is still more than one planner but each with its own purpose and it works for me. I have an 8 1/2 daily schedule/memory/everything planner. I have a weekly Skeleton planner with only schedule/appointments for quick overview. And a TN/wallet EDC weekly so I don’t forget anything when I’m out and about.

Wow! Yes that’s a huge change lol! Thankfully I never really bought into buying lots of inserts or the whole chunky planner situation. I don’t even do stickers or any of that stuff because truly it gets expensive. So my goal has always been functionality. That certainly hasn’t meant that I didn’t buy a few inserts in the beginning when I was figuring out what works, but after I figured that out, I just stuck to replenishing what I need every year. I refuse to maintain more than one planner that I use on any kind of regular basis. I have a goals’ planner that I use once a month for the purpose of actually planning my goals but then I transfer those actionable steps into my daily planner. I HAVE to have my planner with me at all times so personal size keeps it portable and life simple 😂

Geez, you did a 360. Didn’t you already purchase the Personal inserts? What are going to do with your personal planners? I’m not surprised that you went with the GM though. When I purchased the A5 from C&P the temptation was very strong. But for now I’m staying in my MM as my workhorse and maybe the pocket or the pm to carry with me. The thing that prevents me from moving into a larger planner is 1st portability and 2nd I have so much money invested into the MM that starting over would be overwhelming economically and time consuming. Can’t wait to see the new chapters of Rana Plans GM style. Be safe friend❣️

I have never been a tracker or meal planner etc in my planner. It’s for keeping my head on straight so it’s only 4 sections: calendar, finances, home and notes. Finances is very basic and only a few pages and so is home. Home is where medication lists and car maintenance goes and a list of birthdays and anniversaries. I have an A5 but it’s nowhere near as chunky as all the others I see

Until this weekend, I had never heard of anyone loving a chunky planner. I have to wonder if that was a marketing technique that certain companies pushed and customers assumed it was a real thing so it actually became a real thing. I do see people doing so much decorating that but not near as many tasks and things I would expect they would need to have in there. Then I see the minimal planners, some that look great and some that look bland. But I don't see those in the chunky or anyone talking about wanting that. I definitely think I just never followed those because looking at such a small size cover totally stuffed makes me really nervous and overwhelmed. So it's entirely possible I clicked off as soon as I would see it. I am trying to be more open now with what people are using, why and what is working for them. I am in the process of developing a system for those of us that get overwhelmed with planning but love the idea and especially need to use them due to poor executive function (mainly ADHD or other neurodivergence) My favorite size is a little bigger than the half letter and keeping it well balanced with what I need if I were to go on errands and appointments, yet have a backup at home full of tracking information, contact info, budget info, etc. By doing that, I would expect my planner to stay less than chunky yet have just what I need. I want beautiful dashboards, dividers, page marks, etc and minimal floral line art on my pages. But the more there is in my planner, the less I will use it since it's overwhelming. I think most people that actually NEED a planner to get organized but get overwhelmed with them are trying to do "all the things" like we are told, but they are actually neurodivergent in some ways and so doing things like the crowd does lead to overwhelm and many times failure. At least 30% of the population is neurodivergent and don't even know it. And we just can't do all the things. We need to keep it simple BUT keep it something we want to look at and we can follow. So less is best.
