BIG COBIA FISHING in the NEW YORK CITY SURF - NYC POST STORM TROPICAL HURRICANE BLESSINGS. Maybe its a COBIA! I can not count the times I yelled that this time of year. Finally it was a cobia and a beauty of a fish. My FIRST cobia from the surf right here in big New York City as well. Used the bunker bait today and it paid off well. Lots of sea robins, sharks, skates and of course a big old cobia! I picked a 6/0 circle hook today. Not my first choice this time of year which normally is a 12/0 Mustad 39960 circle. I don't know why I decided to go with the 6/0 but I did. I believe if I went with the Mustad I would not have had this opportunity. Just an inner voice we all should listen to.
I was set up with a 4 foot long 100 lb chafing leader with 6 ounces of lead to about 2 feet of 80 lb leader. CAST. Bite was soft but telling. The run was long fast and hard with nice cuts and turns until the turn some 3-4 minutes later. I would say the fight was far more stealthier and cutting then a shark of the same proportion. As I thought he was a bigger shark. Luckily no leaps. Finally had the fish turned and came in fighting all the way. Might be about 4-5 minutes on the tape but the initial belting full run on my fine Squidder drag is missing. The cobia ran in and out giving him him plenty of drag accompanied by one thumb on spool and one thumb on peeling line - adds a softer touch. Finally, COBIA! COBIA! COBIA! So cool!!!
The cobia tends to be a rare fish in these parts. You always hear about cobia from the surf from Western to Eastern Long Island New York in periodicals and first hand lore. But you rarely get the chance to see one. And let alone hook up with a cobia. I was simply blessed today and I wish to pass that on to you. Have fun out there and we are always happy to share our experiences with all those around the world and hope you enjoyed the video as much as we did making it and remember always - Fish Your Way!

Hi Mag! Thanks so much as always for the words! That is about the name of the game! This year I stayed away from steel leader when bait fishing just to make this opertunity. I just feel the mono is lighter and plays better in the currents. This day I went with a 6/0 hook. I use the Mustad 12/0 normally this time of year its like a 9/0 3X when I gap them. Those 2 things did help and lots of outings, waiting, hits and nisses! No way around that! Thanks as always Mag! Was fly fishing today was slow but keeper fluke on the 1/2 and a small one on the crab!!!

Way to go Jerry!! What a catch!! And a noble release of that delicious fish 🐟 I've only handled them post mortem lol the stripes fade like crazy.... Never saw them so bright before. Was henri big enough to change things around quite a bit at the beach? We got flooded up here. At my new job we have some industrial cleaner /degreaser that has to stay COLD at all times - I'm gonna try cleaning my bearings in it. I've used lighter fluid and brake cleaner but this stuff is awesome. You'd love the facility, every tool on the planet for anything! A tinkerers paradise. I was building couplers for super conductors today. Now I gotta convince the machine shop to clone abu c4s and upgrade them even more. If you could improve the garcia c3 or c4, what would you do?
@FishYourWay
@FishYourWay 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph thanks! It was a noble beast just amazing watching and feeling him swim off. From what i see it was most rain the moon did its thing but no big big changes but some. Nothing crazy. the water clarity was actually ok too oddly. Sounds like an amazing set up there. I personally think Abu got it just right. I keep mine stock. Take off the thumb bar I like my whole thumb over the spool to feel the line play up and slow it easier. Thats about it. I tend to change the bearings when the make a lot of noise. A lot of noise! The interesting thing about casting and bait reels I think is most of it is you. Thumb the drag, thumb the cast. I could never understand why put 19 ball bearings in a reel when the first thing they do is apply 3 different braking mechanisms? Why not do bushings to start? I do like 2 spool bearings over the bushings. Another is super drags. I have stopped 7ft shark with 3 lbs of drag! thats just me though - offshore different ballgame with tuna and marlin and all that stuff 60mph errr better have something smooth!!!!
@JoeDeLuise
@JoeDeLuise 3 жыл бұрын
@@FishYourWay soo true Jerry 👍👍👍bearings used to be the big selling point now its the 22 lbs of drag or more in a 1000 size spinning reel. It's ridiculous. Spinning reels don't even need hearings. I might try zero bearings sometime... They're supposed to fly. I know 13 fishing uses them in saltwater reels. Just a slick polymer I believe. I like felt over carbon drags in smaller reels... That shimano oiled felt is silky-smooth.
