Stuart Adamson always has lyrics that have impact. In this song, the lyric "I could walk a 1000 miles tonight and never find my place...at least until it gets too light to hide my tearful face." This is powerful poetry folks. If I were an English teacher in high schoole or college, I'd make my students study this poetry over most the crap I had to study has a kid.

Stuart was a genius; saw BC over 70* times; he never remembered me; i'm ok with that....found it hard to talk at times; he'd put me at ease.....just soo friggin' grateful for what he/they left!.....and Tony,Bruce and Mark; all in their own way have/will, still help us to never forget! In their own way..whatever they do.....i doubt Stuart will ever be forgotten! For as long as they survive; pretty darn sure they'll be 'nods' to Stuart in whatever form; a lasting impression on all of us!

There was a reason for that. According to Classic Rock: "Fragile Thing was A-listed at Radio 2 and the single looked a dead cert to make the top 40 until chart regulators CIN decided that the ‘pizza box’ packaging of the CD2 single had one too many folds in it. Sales would therefore not be eligible." Basically it sounds like sales were sabotaged due to some petty technicality. Here's a link to the full article if you're interested. I've never seen this video and yet it's everything I imagined, a Scot alone in a diner in America, the utter loneliness of missing a connection, oceans apart. I feel it strongly resonates imagery from Shattered Cross as well; the man in black, the woman in red, I have a music video in my head for that too, and it looks a lot like this, especially the figure alone on the road, the dusts in the air, that sense of futility... Fragility. Life and love both. I'm incredibly disappointed that for whatever reason they cut the verse including the line "all I ever wanted, was to be that hero too" in part because it resonates so strongly with me personally, but also because I think it's a very telling truth he immortalised in song. I think if he'd realised he *was* a hero, how many people's lives he'd changed, he could have returned to Scotland, to a hero's welcome. We shouldn't erase that, I think. But what do I know? I'm a lost Scots poet myself and I just feel strongly about certain words and phrases sometimes and today it was that one. His words affected me and every piece of poetry from me will continue his legacy in the only way I can. I wouldn't be the writer I am today without his poetry saving the days, and getting me through "a lot of cold nights, missing..."

Beautiful writing. He is sorely missed and elsewhere I have said to others that we need to celebrate what he did create and was released. Now though I acknowledge that grieving is an individual journey. Yet, his empathy, humanism, and connection to others in his lyricism haunts me too. I feel for all who were touched by the Big Man with a heart as big as the world, a heart that bled for this world, too.

I think he had a great depth of insight into the soul, and that's why his works are so enduring, and so haunting. I hope he knew how much he gave while he was here, now just how much felt taken from him, in the end.

@@AnFithich Great response. I prefer the former interpretation of perhaps one of my favourite BC tunes to the later. However, as you say, great art inspires us in countless ways-many and most of them not immediately obvious. I can truly say that BC, and in particular Stu's tremulous lyricism, was integral to my own validation at a time when I had few admirable role models. My formative early teen years were spent replaying 'The Crossing', 'Wonderland EP' and 'Steeltown', on cassette tapes, tapes I repeatedly repaired. In terms of the darkness he carried, I can speak to you about my own intuitions concerning that but I would prefer not to do so here as I would not wish to alienate others. He most certainly knew about the way he touched others and I feel, while he cherished that, what he held onto consumed him. Might you know where the original CountryClub BC fan club forum is? I posted there when I found out about his death but have been unable to locate the original forum. Regardless, rest assured that his words and songs will always be woven into my own fiber...and I would have it no other way.

Like most people I was gutted when I heard about Stuart’s death. Big Country have been and always will be my number one band ever. End of story. Always listening to boy's as well as Stuarts side gig with Marcus (The Raphaels). Reading some of the comments just reaffirms what I have thought for forty odd years. Singer, song writer, Guitarist, entertainer there are few in this world that can/could sit at the top table. Only ever managed to see the Big Country once in my life and it is also one of my biggest regrets. Can't help but think of all the music we could have enjoyed. So, remember him, his songs and if you need help talk to someone, anyone well all do at some point in our life's.

I love the song and enjoyed many of the comments. Many of you spoke very elegantly about Stuart. I wish I could too. I trust that I won't, so I'll be overly wordy and not as effective in what I'm trying to say instead. He was a bard and troubadour. His music and words always inspired and moved me. I am saddened by the depth of his sorrow. I wish there had been a way for him to get help. The ironic thing is that many of his songs speak of hard times but they often had a spirit of a good battle against those hard times and inspired me in my own life. This song has a deep sadness, but was blended so well with lyric and music that it is a truly artistic and a piece to be admired. Eddie Reader's vocals add a great deal. The whole band are insanely talented and use their talent in a way that always serves the song more than their own glory or vanity.

In this video, Stuart resembles actor Ray Liotta a bit facially. Seldom does a day pass in which I lament his passing. .especially in the manner that he left the earth. His brilliance as a songwriter and guitarist is unsurpassed and I'm thankful I got to see him and BC in better times. The mark of a great artist is how they effect the way you feel for years to come.
