Big Daddy was the model for ALL rappers, regardless if he was actually the best or not. But when you look at the game, especially during the Golden Age, Kane was the one who provided the flows that encapsulated nearly every style before and after him.

Glad they asked that question about how he felt being compared to Rakim. I always felt like people just wrote Kane off, as if he isn't one of the greatest. I always felt like it was close, but I give Rakim the edge because his rhymes were deeper and they stood for something. Metaphorically, Kane was better. Unfortunately, dudes today don't know what lyricism really is, and think it's nothing but metaphors, deep artists like Rakim couldn't exist today without dumbing down their rhymes.

Rakim to Big Daddy Kane in "Follow The Leader" A furified freestyle, lyrics of fury My third eye makes me shine like jewelry You're just a rent-a-rapper, your rhymes are minute-maid I'll be here when it fade to watch you flip like a renegade I can't wait to break and eliminate On every traitor or snake, so stay awake And follow and follow, because the tempo's a trail The stage is a cage, the mic is a third rail I'm Rakim, the fiend of a microphone I'm not him, so leave my mic alone Soon as the beat is felt, I'm ready to go So fasten your seatbelt, 'coz I'm about to flow No need to speed slow down to let the leader lead Word to DADDY, indeed The R's a rollin' stone, so I'm rollin' Directions is told, then the rhymes are stolen Stop buggin', a brother said, "Dig 'em, I never dug 'em" He couldn't follow the leader long enough so I drug 'em Into danger zone, he should arrange his own Face it, it's basic, erase it, change ya tone Coz there's one R in the alphabet It's a one-letter word and it's about to get More complex from one rhyme to the next Eric B be easy on the flex I've been from state to state, followers tailgate Keep comin' but you came too late, but I'll wait So back up, regroup, get a grip, come equipped You're the next contestant, clap ya hands, you won a trip The price is right, don't make a deal too soon How many notes could you name this tune? Follow the leader is the title, theme, task Now ya know, you don't have to ask Rap is rhythm and poetry, cuts create sound effects You might catch up if you follow the records E.Wrecks Until then keep eatin' and swallowin' You better take a deep breath and keep followin' the leader Follow the leader BOOOM!
@toadstyle10110 жыл бұрын
Actually, Erick Sermon said in an interview that the lines from "A brother said dig 'em, I never dug 'em" to "change ya tone" were aimed at EPMD (I'm guessing more towards Parrish Smith), because of the fact that in EPMD's song "You're A Customer", Parrish rapped "smack me and I'll smack you back" which sounded like (as mentioned in Nas' song U.B.R.) a response to Eric B & Rakim's "I Ain't No Joke" line "you could get a smack for this, I ain't no joke".
@periechontology10 жыл бұрын
toadstyle101 That's ridiculous, EPMD only really made it with Strictly Business which came out like two months before Follow The Leader. And as you know, these records are typically recorded as much as a year before they are released.

Ok I used to think that talk was instigating, cause I think that either of them would call the other out bc of how established they were, but those bars starting w "I can't wait to break and eliminate" are MASTERFUL using against, mocking, and paying respect Kane's style. Thank you for putting it in this context.

Two different rappers, Rakim a top lyricist in any era, but is one dimensional. Big Daddy Kane was the whole package, he appealed to not only to the political rap fan, he had the parties rockin with girls dancing. Rakim had three songs girls dance to, "Eric b 4 president"" Paid in full" and " I know you got soul". While men make up most panels when it comes to "greatest mc of all time" lists, this fact gets neglected and Rakim usually gets the nod over Kane as the better Mc. As a dj from the Bx in the 80's and 90's, I can tell you I played Kane to get the party started .
@Rome19xx10 жыл бұрын
To me they can't be compared greatness is just that... great. MJ vs. prince the other MJ vs. Magic, Big vs. Pac people could argue all day and both sides be right. ED you forgot about microphone fiend and he's not one dimensional the label couldn't market him to a broader audience, his style is pure NYC and of course being righteous definitely didn't help. Kane on the other hand, up tempo danced had dancers and wasn't (just my opinion) offensive or threatening meaning they weren't worried he'd say white men are devils type shit. They both are hall of fame lyricist.
@masterofmashup173710 жыл бұрын
Jerome Hughes Have to disagree with you bro, Rakim is a one dimensional rapper. You can't always blame the label, Jive wasn't a big time label that knew how to market rappers and Krs did well with them. Rakim after his first album had only street hits for the fellas. I loved Microphone fiend, but as a Dj who did at least 1 party a week in the Bx in the 80's, I'm telling you that it wasnt a record that got girls on the floor. I have no problem with Rakim, i loved a lot of his songs after the first album, but if you aint making records for the ladies, you are neglecting a key audience. Clubs and parties are wack if the girls arent shaking their asses on the floor, Rakim,Nas,Wu, and other hardcore/political/gangsta rap will always be something males will like more than the females, and in my opinion limits their airplay and spins at a club/party. But you are right in saying they are both hall of fame material. respect......
@Rome19xx10 жыл бұрын
Much peace done a lot of parties was signed a couple of times (I'm a former M.C.)mad shows at the Roxy , skate fever, encore danceteria etc. and KRS is another legend but never quite blew like he should have even wit movie sound track. When I worked for Clive Davis every Thursday they would meet and discuss how to market rappers and couldn't until he signed Puff. Rap was still young and even with as much talent as they have it was still hit and miss, Public Enemy first album wasn't even played but after some JB loops and non- threatening black power persona ka-boom lol listening to what's out now I think a lot of the unsung would have done better with today's marketing. Well maybe it's seems that today the game is more monopolized than before. Stay up much respect
