They did but it wasn't always the case that they were assigned the names. Darren Matthews said he picked the name Steve Regal himself out of the pages of a wrestling magazine. Back then no one in the UK would have heard of or been able to watch the Americans.

Dale Baker Kent was a legend. Some of the wrestlers didn't like the fact that he would, in their view, spoil their gimmick or tough guy persona by insisting on telling us that they were a fishmonger Monday to Friday, but for me that added to the realism of UK wrestling vs the wwf at the time.
