Today 3engineers of wartsila came to the powerplant to inspect the engines after 3000hours of use.

I was once visiting a warehouse repairing something. I looked for a seat so that I could complete some paperwork and spotted a large metal drum. After standing back up I then realised that the metal drum was in fact a huge piston - much like the one in this video. It was in a warehouse in Blyth, Northumberland. I remember the piston was much more worn that what we see in this video. I have no idea what became of that old piston.

Nice Video! How did they determine that this cylinder was due for an inspection? Does this engine always run a power balance test through the control room and alerts operators when one or more cylinders are contributing more/less power than the others...or did some one just hear noises? I have been to Zakinthos, Agios Sostis, and Thessoloniki and want to see it all again! All the best from the USA :)

Are the engines for generating power alongside the boilers (so some kind of combined power plant) or are the engines backup for when the boilers aren't working or if electricity demand is suddenly very high? Also, how is the steam produced - is it gas or coal fired? Must be really interesting working with all this incredible machinery.

It probably burns its own oil as its a 2 stroke. I would love to fill this thing with asmoil dominator jus to see what it would do, or castor 927 maxima. i top off my detroit 8v92 2 stroke turbo with BRP XD-100, 46$ at walmart! Works great

Most all wartsils are 2 stroke and burn their lube oil and require low ash oil as they are total loss. I saw an inline 8 Wartsila 2 stroke on a tug and got to start it. It even had a separate oil tank and it used the oil from that and burned it off like any other 2 stroke! It was a uni-flow 2 stroke!

It might sound funny to say, but I found the size of the components, huge as they were, a bit underwhelming in comparison to the size of the overall engine. With the entire engine being such a massive size, I was actually expecting the piston and rod to be far larger than it appeared here, I thought it might have been at least a metre in diameter, similar to their large 14 cylinder engines.
