Off-Grid Garage

Күн бұрын

The missing parts have arrived and we can finally upgrade the cabinet and getting everything installed properly. This is huge and took me the whole day. There were some small problems which needed to be solved during the upgrade. I also got the new delivery for Solar Mart right in time.
The new busbars are huge and gave me some headache at the beginning but I thing the solution I found is actually pretty nice and space saving.
The fans are now controlled by the inverter and I don't need an extra buck converter or temperature controller as some of you suggested. This is an easy and effective solution!

There are two types of countries: those that have landed men on the moon, and those that use the metric system :-) I'm in the U.S. and I have a mix of Victron, Blue Sea, and BEP (among others) devices, bus bars, fuse holders, etc. (all using AWG cable sizes and lugs). It can be a bit frustrating to have fastener sizes that are *almost* the same and yet require different sockets and wrenches. Some day the U.S. will probably go all metric but probably not in our lifetimes.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia The socket set was probably made in (or at least for) the USA! :) How long has your area been metric? The U.S. and Canada started the conversion in the 1970s, but only Canada actually did it. (Well, except for time... even France gave up on that one!) The U.K. started to convert to metric in the 1960s, and they are almost done now. :)

@@Sylvan_dB I remember that attempt at metric conversion in the U.S. The really funny part was when the gas (petrol) stations started changing their price signs from gallons to liters. I actually heard people complimenting the President because they thought the price of gas suddenly went down! That might be something for the current President to consider, so when our gas hits $2/Liter, he will be a hero! 🤪

@@OffGridGarageAustralia All teasing aside, I wish the U.S. had not backed away from the metric conversion we had started. It makes measurements so much easier (which, in turn, helps you avoid mistakes when plugging them into an equation). I think the unusual number of thumbs down for this video are people who took your frustration with U.S. standards a little too seriously. Back to teasing: How 'bout them crazy Canadians, eh? They've got stuff like a butt of liquid equals two hogsheads or something like that. @peterclarkson7317
@peterclarkson7317 3 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with soldering wires that then go into connectors if they take any load. The reason being that in high current connections there is always the potential for a hot spot. This may be only warm to start with, but then the solder starts to soften ever so slightly,. This causes a slight rise in resistance at the joint, which in turn increases the heat, and the cycle keeps going untill you get a loose joint and can start to overheat the cable. I talk from experience after investigating incidents caused by this phonominen. Ferrel's on stranded cable into connectors, unless the connector is the type where the screw presses a plate onto the cable to protect it.

I noticed you have 4 exhaust fans and 3 filtered intake fans. With my experience with PCs, this may cause an under pressure situation in the box causing air to be drawn into your enclosure thru any other gap. IE: conduits, etc. If you had more intake fans than exhaust fans, you will create a desired overpressure forcing dust,bugs out, rather than from being drawn in. Every gap will push air out.

"this is my second mistake, buying something from the US..." I must take exception to this statement. Yes, we have a different measuring system but our QUALITY is normally better and more consistent. Do I wish our country switched to the metric system back in the 70's when there was a push to do so, yes. But we didn't. We in the US have to have two sets of tools (as I do) because of the two different systems. I guess all I can tell you is don't by made in the USA. I hope the fans work for you. I made a rather intricate box for my 2000 watt generator with two 7" fans at opposite ends, one pulling air and the other pushing air. I did this so I could run my generator outside in a weatherproof setting and had hoped it would reduce the noise from the unit. It failed on both accounts. It was only minimally quieter, even though I had insulated the box and, with the ambient air temperature at 85 F degrees the motor overheated in just 15 minutes time with a 1200 watt load. I was so disappointed. I put a lot of time and effort into that build.

At first I thought you had the dual pole breakers for the MPPT feeds to the busbar the wrong way around (in on top, out on the bottom) but then thinking about it - you are protecting the batteries from a short in the output of the MPPT, so if anything happens the “arc catcher” inside the breaker is on the top connections, which is where the (greater) battery energy is - I think? If you think mixing metric and imperial measurements is bad you should come to the U.K. We drive in MPH and road signs are in miles, but when you go to purchase anything you buy it by the metre🤯 Great progress as always, stay safe.

I like that idea of using the fans in the inverter as a trigger for cabinet fans, but opening the inverter to find out the voltage to its fans to then connect onto them could mean breaking the warranty seal? I'd take the risk on a cheaper inverter but I'm not so sure with a victron. What you think?

Andy, I looked in your parts list but couldn't find the cable terminals you said you were using (from Blue Bar Industries?). They look thick enough, although I prefer marine grade and avoid the ones that have an air gap (14:36). I am definitely getting that hydraulic crimping tool though!

I think that you are right putting breakers and fuses to protect yourself. How about an electrical differential? since you have a water pump running on this circuit, it might be a relevant safety feature?

What is an electrical differential? An RCD? GFCI?
@dffghuytfvb
@dffghuytfvb 3 жыл бұрын
@@OffGridGarageAustralia a device that measures the amperes on both poles of an alternating supply and if the difference exceeds say 300 or 30 mA, cuts the circuit, on both poles. In western Europe for instance, it is compulsory to have a 300 mA on the entrance of the main supply, and a 30mA to protect all bathrooms. It requires a good ground since all electrical leaks will attempt to flow to the ground and this would create the electrical flow that the differential can measure. I do not know the acronyms in English

Hey us British (technically Scottish here) don’t use that anymore :p It’s the Americans that decided hey we like being different, we’ll keep this! It’s been confusing for me and my generation as my parents knew things in imperial but I was learning them in metric. So things like cutting wood and building that my dad showed me first time around, I’ll think of that in imperial measurements but when it comes to connecting nuts, bolts, etc, i always think in metric. More confusing to me is why they don’t line up. Always annoying!

I'm no expert to be sure, but - why not mount your solar controllers sideways? Where the terminals are pointing to the side rather than down? I'd think it would make cable routing much simpler.
@markelkins8432
@markelkins8432 3 жыл бұрын
The heat sink fins on the back of the MTTP controller run up/down, turning the MPPT controller 90° sideways would reduce the air flow across the fins.

@wanderingzythophile9083 3 жыл бұрын
Re: air flow - is that a general thing or more specific to the setup here with the fans in the door? Seems Andy went with the fans mainly due to the inverter and not the charge controllers...?
@markelkins8432
@markelkins8432 3 жыл бұрын
If you go back a bit in time, that particular MPPT controller of that size sometimes has a heat issue. Anyway, the fins are there for a reason, to dissipate heat. Best to allow them to work as efficiently as possible. Personally, having the input power (PV) connection at the top and output at the bottom might be a convenient design change by Victron.
