Go out in a Western New York alfalfa field with Big Tractor Power to see and hear big farm machines chopping haulage for dairy cow feed. KZbin Viewers will see a 230 hp John Deere 7230R tractor and 32ft Poettinger Nova Cat triple mower cut alfalfa. A 250 hp OXBO 4334 Self-Propelled merger combines 73ft of mowed alfalfa into one big windrow for the forage harvester. A 625 hp John Deere 7780 ProDrive Self Propelled forage harvester chops the alfalfa. Ten ton trucks carry the haylage back to the farm where a 375 hp John Deere 9320 4wd equipped with a Grouser blade pushes the feed in a bunk silo and a 235 hp Case International 9230 4wd with an Agromatic Big Foot Forage Packer seals in the feed.

The haybine and merger is alot different than using a 6 foot sickle mower and a ground driven new idea hay rake surprising what 50 years of inprovement makes. Thank you BTP for this video good information.

It sure has changed. What used to take a week to clear a field is done in a matter of hours.

Nice to see NY farming. I always felt packing the bunk was the most boring job in the world. These guys have it good with ac cabs. I was doing it with an open cab tractor when I was in my 20's and one time I had a small hole in the thigh of my jeans. I didn't think anything of it of course, but after 2 days that spot was blistered and horribly burnt by the sun. It was the worst sunburn I had ever seen. My arms, face, and neck were used to that kind of exposure, but my lily white thigh was not. After that I made sure my jeans weren't ripped when I drove in the sun all day.

That's a far cry from a 10 ft sickle mower and 5 wheel rake. And oh yeah, a boy on the hay rack (me) stacking bales while my Dad was under the umbrella on the 504 Farmall pullng the IH baler. Those were the days!

Those trucks in the field create compaction, especially the front axle tires : yes? no?
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 жыл бұрын
Yes trucks create allot of compaction. Lots of weight. That is why they merge they hat to reduce the amount of traffic over the field.

What would be the definition of haylage? The material apparently has less moisture content than silage. And, the material is much more moisture content than dry hay. Is haylage preferred to silage so that there is not so much weight to haul from the field? How about the fermenting process in the bunker? Is there an ideal moisture content for doing the chopping? I would think the time from mow, to merger, to chopper would be very critical on a low humidity, sunny, slight breeze day.
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 6 жыл бұрын
Haylage is a term for hay silage. Mainly you let it dry just a bit. You can not chop the alfalfa straight from the mower. It would be too wet.

Burning lots and lots of diesel fuel and your still getting your milk for about $2.29 a gallon at your local store.I hope everyone understands why most dairy farms go out of business.It takes alot of manpower and"BIG TRACTOR POWER"to do this.

The forage harvester doesn't process the alfalfa into haylage; the process of ensiling does.

@valuedhumanoid6574

This process is much different than the silage harvest I see in Europe. The use corn and the harvester cuts, chops and sprays it directly into the truck. The giant hill and packing it down is similar, though they use what are called buckrakes and I have seen videos of not only large 4x4 tractors smooshing the hell out of it, but they actually use rollers like you see on a highway paving job. They really pack that shit in. But it all ends up in a dairy cows belly and into milk, so what ever it takes, right?
