BIG GAR with a TINY HOOK? Testing the newest alligator gar fishing trend

In this fishing video I tested out the newest alligator gar fishing trend, which is using a tiny hook to catch big fish. You have to use thread to tie the bait onto the hook which is similar to using a hair rig for carp fishing. I'm not sure I'm sold on the method yet, but after landing a big alligator gar I'll have to do some more testing.

This was my first attempt using a small 2/0 hook to try and land a really big fish. It worked out and I’ll have to keep trying this method.

first time we fished the 1/0 hook i completely 100% thought it wouldn't work an hour later we had a 7'4 mouth hooked at the bank and landed 2 more 7 footers within the week on it.

couple thing using the small hook method, i would keep the gap between bait and hook down to about 1/2 inch further then that will raise the chance of gill bleeding, i would also suggest a hard hookset if not multiple hooksets on heavy drag and then backing off the drag once the fish's weight can actually be felt, once they start headshaking closer to you, you want the drag pretty low or the hook will be more prone to ripping out on a hard headshake. thanks for trying new things nice catch

I like the idea of this method. It’s similar to hair rigs when I carp fish. I hadn’t been gar fishing in a while because of a back injury so I accidentally had the drag super loose when I went for the set because failed to check it first. Had to set a few times 😂

I’ve seen a few other guys use it and figured I’d try it. It’s the same method I use for carp fishing, where the bait hangs below a small hook. My PB buffalo was 39lb and caught on a #8 hook.

That spot is really pressured by anglers. I was there a few hours and that was the only run. So far the small hook seems to work. I like it too because you can set earlier and don’t have to let them run forever

Yes u can almost set instantly it fill good to be able to see the hook have u tried the memorial aria got a 7 footer there

@@chmfishing7344 i love setting early. I normally wait till they take off full force and then set. Normally within a minute or so. I haven’t tried that area for gar but Wild Life has pulled in some big ones around there.
