Maiden flight of my 96" (that's 8 foot) Canada Themed Flying Wing.
Not the 100% success I had hoped for, but I'm not ready to give up yet.

Had some pretty good luck with those 3/8" x 20" x 30" sheets of Dollar Tree foam; bending along scored lines to form an airfoil like the guys do on the FliteTest channel. We made a 70" span wing using the $1 sheets and bamboo sticks -- wound up with a pretty low wing loading >13oz per square foot. We try to stuff everything we can forward of the CG including power [unlike Jack Northrup] which, as you know, can be a real hat trick. Anything added aft of the CG [including paint] becomes leveraged deadweight that has to be counterbalanced by adding weight to the "nose." Two small tractor motors with differential thrust instead of or augmenting elevon yaw control is supposed to work pretty good. The best of everything.

Yeah, I've used a bunch of that stuff in builds as well. For flying/delta wings and traditional planes. I use more the experimental airlines techniques for airfoil for those. For this build (which was more than 4 years ago) I just wanted to do something simple. Unfortunately Home Depot didn't have the thickness of foam in stock that I wanted so I ended up with this (which was way too thick) and tried to force it to fly with power :-). I had thought about going back and implementing a double motor differential thrust system but never got around to it...now with the new regulations flying something this size (even in an open field like this) is just asking for trouble so I destroyed it. I did manage to get it to fly once though...needed 4s batteries instead of 3s. If I was to do this again (I won't) I would do it completely differently. The elevons are just too heavy and the servos (even big ones) have trouble with them. It was a fun little project though and in the end that's all that matters.

More like Limited Vertical....LOL Nice build tho I see in your other videos it does fly! Wheres the blue noob been at lately? Are you filming this with those cheap sun glasses camera? I have a pair but they don't seem to give as good a video as yours?

Build the rest of the wing's sloped incline. Thus housing the motors from the elements too. Also. Use a little stronger motors.

Nice try john. Little bit of tweaking and it will be right up. 2 thumbs up man..

It was fun trying. When I found the servo was dead I knew there was a pretty slim chance of it having a decent flight. Looks like rain this weekend, but I'll give it another try soon.

I wonder any one thought of building a air foil shape,jet engine,so a flying wing will not hav resistants against the wind,the wing itself is the engine.

To nose heavy, Not enough reflex washout, and under powered. KF Airfoil not to bad but not great. Id taper down the trailing edge if anything. the rest of it probably will be fine.

the wing and foam is too thick .. and the step is too deep... use 1/2" foam and multiple layers to make a KFm3 or KFm7.. and try pallet strapping to reinforce the wing instead or in addition to CF spars... another alternative is a (RM1 type of) chamfered wing from a single thick foam layer.. simple chamfers work well

Round off the back of the wing and it will be enough power.

That thing aint never going to fly,i can tell just by looking at it! Just look at that trailing edge...well its hardly an edge more brick!!

lol...Agreed that it is too thick, but it does fly (I would certainly make some different choices if building it again). You can see it flying in some of my later videos. In addition, with proper CG and a 5S setup or larger prop on the 4S setup I anticipate that it would fly quite well (I'll need to wait for the spring to test again). I do appreciate the view and the comment. I have thought about replacing the elevons with thinner material, if for nothing else than to save my servos from having to lift that much weight.

It did fly...flew it twice. It is too difficult to launch, so is impractical. I might take the electronics off of it and put it on another plane eventually.

How much power is that motor putting out?
@UnlimitedVertical
@UnlimitedVertical 10 жыл бұрын
Specs say it's capable of 910W, but with the battery/prop combination I had I'd be surprised if it was much over 400W. To be optimal I need to go with a 5s battery, but I'm going to try a 4s or a slightly larger prop first (since I don't have any 5s batteries).
@TheLukey21
@TheLukey21 10 жыл бұрын
UnlimitedVertical do you not have a 3s and a 2s or could you not go with a two 3s and reduce the endpoint so it wont put the full 6s through it, just a thought i had right now. should be great when setup properly and should be great for fpv as it should be stable and be able to carry fpv equipment no problem at all
@UnlimitedVertical
@UnlimitedVertical 10 жыл бұрын
TheLukey21 Yep, could do that too. Tried it again on a 4s at it wasn't too bad for power. The big prop should be in soon, so many options to try :-) Here is the link for the flight with the 4s Giant Flying Wing - Actually Flying!

UnlimitedVertical already seen the vid and it had the lovely tail heavy bit as your last attempt, just maidened a new flying wing my self and i was very lucky with my first as i must of got it spot on (used a cg calculator) but this one i read the wrong measurement for cg and it flew horrible but was funny to watch and then the next attemp was nose heavy but it glided forever and i finally have it correct but now i just changed my motor angle as it had some pretty bad torque roll under full power. flying wings are great when the cg is right but otherwise just forget it lol
@UnlimitedVertical
@UnlimitedVertical 10 жыл бұрын
Agreed...proper CG is essential for these. The CG calculator told me that I needed more weight up front, I should never have removed it.

Thanks Kim, I'm not giving up on it yet. The servo is fixed/replaced. I might try one more time with 4s batteries instead of 3s...I've also ordered a larger prop which should give it more thrust. If neither of those two are good enough then I'll add another motor or two :-) Oh, and I might also try removed the weight I added to the nose.

Kim sørensen Depending on what size wing you are making I might have some suggestions. Do you plan on making a huge one like this? If so, I would use 1" foam instead of 1.5"...and use larger/better quality servos than I used. Also, I am not sure the elevons need to be that thick either. I wonder if a stepped elevon would work (1" think near the wing and 1/2" thick near the edge). Layering the elevon using depron or foam-board would allow some ridged support and the stepping would remove some of the weight. One of the things I love about building (and failing) is that it tells me what does not work well, which gives me new ideas to try.

Kim sørensen I recommend the FPV44 or FPVTrond's FPV49. The thing I like about the FPV44 is that it fits in the trunk of my car and I can make it out of a single sheet of 2'x8'x1/2" XPS foam insulation.
