I had a blast reviewing the Tekton Impact Monitors, they are big muthas, measuring 24.5 x 10.1 x 13 inches. For more info, www.tektondesign.com/impact-mo...
If you can kick in $1 or $2 a month to keep the Audiophiliac Daily Show commercial free I'd appreciate it, / audiophiliac

Very interesting video. There is something about a line array of speakers that really does produce that gravitas / scale / impact that you refer to. It's not new though, I have an early 70s top of the line set of Philips 22RH499 speakers which I love for this exact reason. 4 midrange and 4 tweeters with a 12" bass unit in an 80 liter enclosure. Really impressive.

Size queen ;) Steve, these speakekers are great *if you have the room*. I love the fact that many reviewers assume we all live in refurbished warehouses with 12' high ceilings - that's just not reality for many of us. Thanks for the vid.

Are you assuming you need a warehouse for speakers of this size? My infinity QBs from the 70s were larger than these, most floorstanders are larger than these. It's all about how you set up your room and where your priorities lie. If you have an apartment/condo, you may not need the dynamics here, but most houses could easily fit a pair of speakers this size into a living room.

I am just learning about the Tekton tweeter array - the outer ring of 6 along with the center one cover the midrange from around 400Hz. The center tweeter then covers all the rest of the way up.

I liked the older '70s era big boxy speakers. They had depth and some resonance making the music sound closer to live. A lot of the newer tower speakers to me all sound like cheap car speakers shoved in a box,well not all of them but a lot.

Hi Steve, love your channel! I'm sure you get a million questions like this. You mentioned the monitors are kind of equivalent to the forte iii. I have been kicking around purchasing the Cornwall III's after hearing your review of the heresy iii's. I figured they would have same highs and mids with more Bass. If the cost of the double impacts and the Cornwall iii's were exactly the same which would you prefer and for what reasons? The differences between the two? I'm asking because I'll never be able to do a direct comparison. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Steve- would love to see you discuss why our audio systems sometimes sound great (often late at night) and sometimes just blah- almost like two different systems. I’ve heard many explanations for this such as dirty power, weather, the quietness of the late hours, even our own hearing, different at different times of the day. I’ve noticed even my piano sounds better in the evening.

Dirty power during the day. Depends on your area, but you'll be feeding your system much cleaner power in the later hours.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 6 жыл бұрын
"Dirty power" LOL. I'm sure there's all sorts of "dirty power" happening at night, but this is a family friendly channel. Seriously, unless you live in a factory district and do _nothing_ to address an actual problem, it's total BS. What's real is the relative quiet of the nighttime. There's also a psychological element to having uninterrupted solitude. One thing I do as a matter of routine is keep volume levels at a bare minimum for most things, like watching the TV or computer. It's like a contest to see how low I can turn down the volume and still make out what's being said. What I've found over the years is that my hearing is best when I'm fresh from a long and restful sleep, regardless of what time of day that is. As my "day" wears on, I need to turn it up. By bedtime, I typically need +8 dB over what I could get by with when I was fresh. That suggests that those who like listening to quiet things should listen right when they wake up. If you listen at night, be aware that just being tired can have the same effect as drinking. Though you can turn it up to compensate for dulled senses, hearing damage happens at the same levels, so be careful.
@fido0825

I love to listen at night too...totally "black" room where all sources of light are eliminated. I'm talking blue tack on all power indicator lights, black shades over the window (basement listening room with one well window). The kind of black where there is no difference between eyes shut and eyes open. The connection to the music to me is heightened considerably!

Can I use impact many tours with subwoofers versus buying double impact towers. Obviously money is concerned but in terms of performance. I have a rather small baby Macintosh and made 252 which is over 100 W per channel at eight homes. Another question by the way those speakers at listed for orders I don’t know if they can make them a dorms and will it affect any performance on my amplifier being that they are 4 oms Thanks so much

Dragan Antonijević I would think this is about right otherwise the only sweat spot would be head on. I've designed some with the 3 tweeter "array" and even with them as close as possible (they were .75 tweeters with no flange) you could hear the phasing unless the surrounding tweeters were crossed at the right wave length. Plus they can be crossed over lower than normal as each is only has to do a fraction of the work

Yes. Correct. 7 powerful motors driving a featherweight 1/3 of a gram (moving mass) piston easily outperforms a single 8" mid-range (that's the diameter of my "polycell array") with 15-20 grams of moving mass. Eric Alexander - President, Tekton Design, LLC

when, years ago, "they" (whoever "they" are) decided to do the skinny speakers because "that's what people wanted", I felt cheated. to this day, such speakers still sound boxy and have no bass, and especially bass clarity. I think we've had 20 years of "skinny is what people demand" and I think it's a ploy to just shove crappy speakers out at an inflated price. give me refrigerater size speakers and if the wife don't like it, she can move out.

The reason these skinny speakers lack bass is the physics and we call it baffle difraction it's when the speaker goes from 2 pi to 4 pi meaning 180 degrees to 360 degrees polar pattern. This phenomena can be corrected in the crossover but at a 6 dB decrease in sensitivity. It's all about the wave length in regards to the shortest dimension of the speaker baffle that determines at what frequency this -6dB/oct slope occurs.

The ostensibly hi-rez download sites are justifying the price increase as "more bits, more dollars". While that would be fine if they actually were making new transfers from analog tape or the actual hi-rez studio digital mixdown. But it seems that many of their titles are just CD rips that are padded with garbage bits. This is akin to buying food by the pound that's been injected with water to make it heavier. After all those RIAA lawsuits, one thing that emerged was that the industry wanted to get a law outlawing fair use. They didn't get that law, so it is perfectly legal to rip your own CDs for personal use, just as we have been transcribing records to tape in decades past. The key here is that you must own that physical copy for fair use to apply. If the industry had their druthers, they'd only sell inferior copies like MP3, with some sort of DRM, and charge you full price.

What makes us queasy about multiple tweeters? Interference patterns, of course. While constructive interference can be a Good Thing, for instance in line arrays, it usually makes for a radiation pattern that's rife with peaks and nulls. I tried looking for an explanation for why the Tekton arrangement might cheat the laws of physics, but was disappointed by a nonsensical treatise about Fender Jazz Bass strings and why a subwoofer wouldn't make a good electric bass string or race car. All very odd and the opposite of reassuring. So Steve, since you heard them, how is the treble dispersion? Is there a sweet spot? Does the pattern change if you move around? Any other clues?

StringerNews1 don't think it can cheat the physics. As Dragan in the comments below has speculated.

Sorry to see this on here. Nothing "nonsensical" happening here at Tekton Design, LLC. Some basic acoustical physics and a tape measure is all anyone needs. For the record: wavelengths shorter than center point to center point within the 'polycell array' are transitioned to the center tweeter. The result is comb filter mitigation ("interference patterns") and fantastic sound. Eric Alexander - President, Tekton Design, LLC

Attainable Audio, it looks like we're getting into Bose 901 territory again. A driver that is efficient in one passband, but whose response drops off rapidly below say 2 kHz isn't going to magically become efficient at lower frequencies just because you put a bunch of them together. You could add lots of EQ to boost the midrange and mute the treble, but then you have a system that's half-assed in both ranges. For the same price you could put in a nice 5" cone that has the suspension and area to move air at the midrange frequencies efficiently, and a tweeter that is free to do what it does best. I've heard a lot of really great speakers built around a 5" cone midrange. If it ain't broke...

I can only hope that Eric Alexander has no engineering duties at Tekton, as his dilettante (mis)understanding of the fundamentals is glaring. As a former (analog) TV engineer, I'm well familiar with comb filtering, and with multi-bay antennas that use constructive interference to good effect. They're totally different things. You don't need my level of expertise to know that it's the _quarter_ wavelength that matters re con/destructive interference. That's high school physics class stuff.

StringerNews1 I will not compare them to Bose or speculate on how they sound as I've not heard them. I HAVE done a few designs with multiple tweeters myself and will say your right about the off axis destructive interference, which of course I knew going into it and which also happens with a 5" cone speaker as I'm sure you know from the physics stand point, it was more an experiment for me to see how the sound would change listening on axis... and yes it did, it became more "dry" as you had less power coming from the near field reflections.

There have been many who simply don't understand what Eric has been doing. And those who doubt this interesting design. If you have not read the Stereophile review along with measurements from the well respected John Atkinson if not the most respected person in the field he makes it clear that that design as implemented by Eric works. I'm not knocking, just say Eric does understand how sound waves work. John is not the only one who says this works. See the link to the page and review. www.tektondesign.com/impact-monitor.html

The audiophiles that get queasy about seeing 7 tweeters should be doing blind listening tests. Usually we don't (shouldn't) rely on our EYES to evaluate the sound quality of a speaker... right? The visual evaluation should come AFTER the blind listening, just to see if they will fit into your room, you like the color, shape, size, etc.

Steve, surely with all your years of experience you know it has always been a bad idea to use arrays of tweeters because of interference effects caused time delay distortion off axis. Something the human ears is sensitive to at high frequencies. That's why even on D'apollito systems and speakers with multiple woofers you'll find just one tweeter.

Comparable to Klipsch at half the price, eh? That's quite a compliment. I already have Klipsch rp280f, rp5004c & rp600m powered with Yamaha aventage, I guess I'm good, wouldn't change a thing really. The Klipsch center is musical, handles bass impact and dialogue remarkably well.

Instead of buying the impact monitors and having to find a stand that can hold such a huge "monitor" and then buying a subwoofer, I think I'd just get the double impact for $3000. The SE model, Eric declares is an improvement with updated drivers and wider dispersion than the original. Of course, then it's $4k just like the forte 3, which can be found on eBay for $2700 regularly.

Steve, I k ow it's almost an impossible task, but there is no sound sAmple with these reviews. I've got to hear it for myself, and I know how much KZbin streaming is flawed. But it can give you a shadow of and idea what these speakers sound like, especially with a trained ear such as yours telling us what to listen for. I won't buy anything I don't audition first, period. There are just too many time I've read the write up on a pair of speakers that were glowing, telling the reader how great they were and then when I got to the store to listen to them they sounded like shit! I won't do it, period. But even a poor video/audio would provide some idea whether or not they were worth hunting down. Thx

Tekton's design appears nearly identical to MacIntosh's. They're laid out very slightly differently and maybe cover different spectrums at the crossover points but multi-tweeter playing mids is something MacI done way before Tekton. Not that it's bad, I just think MacI deserves the credit for the design and for Eric to call it his design, his creation seems a bit dishonest to me.

@@TektonDesign According to McIntosh, they use the following drivers on their XR100 speakers: - one 3/4" titanium dome tweeter, - ten 2" inverted dome midrange drivers (8 Inverted Titanium Dome Midranges covering 300Hz to 2kHz, and 2 Inverted Titanium Dome Midrange-Tweeters covering 2kHz to 8kHz), and - four 6" cast Frame Poly Cone woofers. So basically, you're either wrong or lying.
