The cold weather has arrived and it's here to stay! It's absolutely freezing living in a van in Sweden, and the cold Swedish winter is a long one. We were not prepared for van life in the winter, especially winter van life with kids!
We hadn't really planned on living in a van in Sweden in the winter, but our plans changed drastically when Malin was admitted to the hospital with acute abdominal pain, and spent a week there. For the last year, Malin has been battling an aggressive form of colorectal cancer, and after a year of treatment including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and two major operations, Malin is finally 'cancer free' and ready to live life. But we're still facing challenges every day.

Who are we?

We are a young 'Swenglish' adventure family, that consists of Swedish Malin, English Tom, and babies Charlie & Isabella, who are half and half. We love all kinds of adventures, including travelling around Sweden and beyond in our little budget family campervan, and we're currently building our dream campervan project.
But right now we’re focused on one thing: to be free of cancer. We've been on the journey to recover since Malin received her colorectal cancer diagnosis in late 2022.

Dear Malin, it is great to know you won't be needing surgery. As for the cold, it is indeed freezing. Couldn't you stay at your mums just for a little while, until the weather improves? Just asking because I know it is hard for you to tolerate the cold. Thank you for a lovely comment and it’s so nice that you care about me in this way! We do stay close to my parents most of the time, just because of the weather. But it’s also important to remember that being outside, moving and exercising is good for my health too, even if it’s cold at the moment🥰

The kids tobogganing made my day - so gorgeous. Never tire of their giggles and sheer enjoyment. I’ll stop complaining about living in my van near Melbourne Australia in a cold rainy snap this past week. I think rain might be worse than snow… I’m glad the van is well insulated and warm 😊. Luckily you are young and otherwise well Malin and that time will hopefully resolve any pain/infection. CBD oil or similar might help with your pain if you have access. So happy you can probably head south after Christmas. 🤗🤗🤗🤗

Oh my goodness, I’ve never been in snow like that before in my life! I’ve been in 6 inches and it melts within two days if we get it, rare. I freeze when it turns 50 or below. I cannot imagine that kind of cold weather: I hope ya’ll stay very warm! So happy to hear that you won’t have to have more surgery, great news!! Woohooo’

That‘s great news - finally things are looking up! Chronic pain can be managed very well with proper medication - I‘m speaking from my own experience. I‘ve got my fingers crossed for you! Enjoy winter! Here in Germany it’s gotten cold and snowy as well. We‘re around -7C at night and -2C during the day, which is unusually cold for this time of year. Haha drygt men kul också med snö även i södra Sverige. Vi har fått flera decimeter här i norr med. Ni kanske kan köra in i nåt varmt parkeringsgarage några timmar för att tina upp bussen. Fast å andra sidan kanske det är bra att ha lite snö på taket som isolering ifall det är väldigt kallt ute.

We have it here in Newcastle but nothing like that mind it's reall cold , Sp pleased u had promising news Malin I really hope the drs have it right for u hun , And u can all get on enjoying travelling , hope the pain meds keep it under control nxt few wks then u can resume your plans , I get that pain in my hands too after chemo and in my feet it's not good eh ,, I had my results of my last MRI I had to have more so waiting again and have anothe scan planed for nxt wed , never a dull min eh hun we are deff kept busy lol x take care stay warm and well , best wishes from Geordie land 💖🦋🇬🇧xxxx

Home yesterday after surgery - won't know results or treatment possibilities until appointment on 21st, so a bit like Malin, it's all about waiting. I was so pleased to read that Malin has had some definition to what has been causing her pain and I am praying that the explanation given is the real cause and that it won't happen again, so that your little family can travel to some place warmer. I loved watching the kids on the sleds in the snow but cold wouldn't be my choice either, Malin! I am sorry it causes such pain but hopefully soon there will be warmer places for Tom and Malin to play with their lovely children. I'm keeping Malin's health in my prayers.

Omg I would literally die in those temps 😂 it’s 4 degrees here in Southend UK and -1 at night and you should hear me moan about the cold! 🥶 There is no way I envy your lifestyle right now and suddenly I feel all cosy. I went out to clean the filter in my koi pond yesterday and the actual pain in my fingers, I could’ve cried. 😄 I’m glad your results are good Malin and now you can move on with life. If I were you I’d travel somewhere warm to fully heal. The kids are so so gorgeous, how don’t they feel the cold though? 🤔

We have even had a bit or snow in the UK and going down to -4 in the evening but -15 is way colder and it is more humid here so feels colder than it is. So glad there isn't the upheaval of surgery.

I think that -4 in the UK is worse than -15 in Sweden. Like you say because it’s so humid there it doesn’t matter how you’re dressed, it’ll always get to you! Here you can layer up and won’t suffer that much from the cold.

Gabapentin really works well with neuropathy. I take it 3 times a day, if I don’t my nerves in my feel spasm really bad. Back surgery is what did it to my. Ugh, hope you feel better and get more good news.❤❤❤❤

Malin, we understand so well how the cold can be painful. This is often misunderstood by people without serious medical issues. We are currently living in Brunei (Borneo). We tried to life in NL, our home country, though the climate really affected my husband's quality of life. Here, it is warm and confortable and he loves it! You are both wise enough to do nothing foolish, so go for it and follow your dreams because you have experienced that life can change at any time. ENJOY🌞
