@@joanlovelace7338 In the USA they have gaited horses - various breeds, but including Tennessee Walking Horses - that have a smooth gait but lift their legs higher (it's a bit more than that but that's the gist of it). Sadly, that isn't enough for those who want to win big money prizes, so they exaggerated the gait by using appallingly cruel methods to make the horse want to not put its feet down. Acids and chemicals put onto the horses legs just above the hooves and covered with cling film to keep it on (soring), chains, beatings, and so on. Sometimes the horses are in so much agony they can't even stand up. Very big and heavy shoes are also applied. You can google it, but be warned, the footage is deeply distressing to watch.

​@joseliabarquez8327 I hadn't heard of it before so looked it up... wearing regular horseshoes, the feet of Big Lick or "performance"-gaited show horses are fitted with tall, heavy stacks of pads to accentuate their gait. These "stacks" force the horses to stand at an unnatural angle, much like wearing high heel platform shoes all day, every day.

@@rosehill9537 Inside of these pads are nails. And these nails are often piercing the toes inside of the hooves which is extremely painful. That's why they launch their feet so high into the air. It's a withdraw reflex. "Ouch it hurts, swoosh!" And to add additional pain they add chemicals to the feet, over the joints directly above the hooves some steel chaines. They knock on their skin causing extreme pain. Sad thing is that even 2 year old horses, which are still foals in their minds, are being ridden and tortured. Afaik Big Lick is prohibited and illegal everywhere in the US. I've read some news about it somewhere. But i'm not sure. I'm not from the US.

While yes, cows chickens and pigs CAN be butchered in a cruel way and that specifically should not happen, them simply being farmed for food is no worse than them getting killed painfully by predators in the wild or overpopulating and ruining their environment.

I learned from watching your videos about Big Lick and the immense cruelty these animals experience during their lifetime. However, I never knew about these Big Lick horses always being kept in their stalls, never being able to run free or actually learning how to be horses. What a horrible existence and then to end up in kill pens when they are no longer of use to their owners! Thank you for the great work that all of you do, rescuing these horses from ending up in kill pens, giving them a second chance at a better life, or providing them with the last act of kindness if they cannot be saved. I got my cremello Tennessee walker from auction after a big lick barn discarded him. He came with papers, and was just the sweetest marshmallow I'd ever met. I got him for $400 because the auction mistakenly ran him as a stud when he was gelded. He almost got on the meat truck so that tells you how much big lick cares about their horses.

Do geldings cost more than studs? I would think a full blooded stallion with papers would cost more. I'm so glad you saved him.

@@andis60 it isn't so much an issue of value as it is an issue of most people not having the facilities and experience to handle a stallion. Stallions can be harder to train, particularly at an older age, and unless you specifically want to breed horses you need facilities that keep them separate from mares and other horses. Some stallions can also develop aggression towards gelding and in an auction setting you have no idea what combinations of those things you are going to get.

The big lick and all horse races treat horses like disposable objects and once a horse is damaged or too damaged after years of abuse and pain, they just put them down or throw them into auction INJURED. There are good people out there trying to put an end to this animal abuse, they put lists of all the horses names that die in horse race training every year and it would make you literally sick to your stomach. There are THOUSANDS of names just in 2023. Most of the causes are broken legs, broken bones ligaments, tendons, colic, hearts giving out from being worked too much! They are just drug off to be thrown away and a new foal goes into training! Most of the dead horses weren’t even over 4 years old. 😥

I just looked up, big lick horses and learn that this is against the law this is band. The horse protection act of 1970 and was amended. There isn’t enough funding pass through Congress for people to be investigated, and for this practice to be abolished and controlled it’s up to the owners to stop doing it, or people reporting owners doing it.
